Roll Call reports (subscription req'd)

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) threw cold water on a key rationale House Republican leaders have been employing this afternoon to explain why they couldn't deliver more GOP votes for the Wall Street bailout package.

At a Monday afternoon press conference, GOP leaders argued that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) cost the measure a dozen Republican votes by delivering an overly partisan floor speech in support of it.

But Bachmann, speaking at a Republican Study Committee press conference, told reporters, "I want to assure you that was not the case. We are not babies who suck our thumbs. We have very principled reasons for voting no."

Bachmann was responding to comments Democratic leaders made dismissing the GOP leaders' claims. But she apparently confused the Democratic response with the initial charge by Republicans, and her comments mirrored those of the Democratic leaders.

UPDATE: More from GOP Rep. John Shadegg on Tuesday's Morning Joe:

Joe Scarborough: Let's bring in Republican Arizona Representative John Shaddegg. Did you vote against this bill because your feelings were hurt by Barney Frank or Nancy Pelosi?

John Shadegg: No, I didn't. It was a stupid speech by her. They didn't move any votes.

Joe Scarborough: Was Boehner wrong?

John Shadegg: Yes. It was embarrassing for leadership on both parties to lose the bill so they made a stupid claim.

What wihiners and crybabies the Republicans are-- crying that Nancy Pelosi hurt their feelings. They cry that the press is picking on McCain's grossly underqualitfied VP- Sarah Palin. Accuse Obama of calling Sarah Palin a pig- stupid diversionary tactics. Meanwhile it okay for that South Carolina rep to call Obama the "Anti-Christ". I hope the Republican get voted out in such big numbers that they are extinct.

Oh Bachman is great. For once she was right about something. Well, in a way. They actually ARE babies, but one mistimed speech would have been a real stupid reason to have voted against legislation THEIR OWN PARTY'S PRESIDENT begged them to pass.

Is there anything Pelosi said in her speech that wasn't true? Is McBush not responsible for the mess we are in now? It's obvious that elephants really do fear mice. As Hillary would say (hello?) "grow a pair."

Ms. Bachmann is still young and has time to switch over to the democratic party.

Ummmm...exactly WHY was is Bachmann being misquoted in the headline?

I'm no fan of Republicans, but that headline is 180 degrees out of synch with what she said (according to the text).

Fix it, please.

It makes sense if you think about it. She was essentially saying they didn't vote "no" because of Pelosi and if they had they would be "babies sucking their thumbs".

I'm also from MN and I'm glad she stood up against this silly bill. Not only did she vote no, she had the balls to come out and say the reason everyone said it didn't pass was BS. I may not agree with her on many issues, but at least she represented the interests of her constituents. Maybe Democracy does work...

Seriously, what is best for all Repubes at this time would be to withdraw from the presidential election, step back, and take four years to reflect upon what they have done and what they have become in the past 8 years. Much introspection needed. It has appeared more and more obvious that:

1- they have failed the war on terror
2- they have botched the whole Iraq deal
3- they have wrecked the economy and the financial superiority of the United States
4- they have sullied America's grandeur in the world
5- they have jeopardized the integrity of the constitution
6- they have driven a wedge between Americans
7- they have spoiled their own party

These 7 Capitol sins earn them the right, and indeed the duty, to reflect upon their own desuetude.

Don't you get it? They get away with blaming the Dems for causing 12 Repubs not to vote for the bill while none of the Repubs ever admit being one of the 12, because they know that reason is dumb. "I vited on principle but 'some' were upset about the speech."

Saying a speech caused them to not vote on something this critical is complete and utter crap!!!

Man up, say the bill is not good enough and then - here's a thought -

COME UP WITH SOMETHING ELSE THAT YOU THINK WOULD WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So many economists and others who have studied this issue have put forth alternatives using systems and regulations that are already in place. Google Thom Hartman. He has a great solution. That's just one but if we are the "hardest and most industrious" people in the world someone among us will have a better way out of this disaster then Bush, et al.
