Roll Call reports (subscription req'd)

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) threw cold water on a key rationale House Republican leaders have been employing this afternoon to explain why they couldn't deliver more GOP votes for the Wall Street bailout package.

At a Monday afternoon press conference, GOP leaders argued that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) cost the measure a dozen Republican votes by delivering an overly partisan floor speech in support of it.

But Bachmann, speaking at a Republican Study Committee press conference, told reporters, "I want to assure you that was not the case. We are not babies who suck our thumbs. We have very principled reasons for voting no."

Bachmann was responding to comments Democratic leaders made dismissing the GOP leaders' claims. But she apparently confused the Democratic response with the initial charge by Republicans, and her comments mirrored those of the Democratic leaders.

UPDATE: More from GOP Rep. John Shadegg on Tuesday's Morning Joe:

Joe Scarborough: Let's bring in Republican Arizona Representative John Shaddegg. Did you vote against this bill because your feelings were hurt by Barney Frank or Nancy Pelosi?

John Shadegg: No, I didn't. It was a stupid speech by her. They didn't move any votes.

Joe Scarborough: Was Boehner wrong?

John Shadegg: Yes. It was embarrassing for leadership on both parties to lose the bill so they made a stupid claim.

Ever seen a country go to hell in a bucket? This is what we are witnessing now. Unfortunately it's our country under 8 years of Bush craft and the prospect of McCain and Palin.

Actually it has only been about 7 and 2/3 years of Pres. Bush. Just think of all the screw ups Pres. Bush can still make in the four months he has remaining.

I couldn't believe that Reps Bohner and Cantor would get up there and say that a SPEECH caused folks not to vote. Just be man enough to say that we backed out b/c we didn't think it was a good bill, but a SPEECH?

For a long time, it has been the republicans taking miserable shots at the dems. Pelosi spoke as a representative NOT the speaker..tho what she said was true..she probably shoulnd't have. Boehner is a horse's southend...he has never had a decent thing to say about anything and he wouldn't vote for anything that the dems did. He is such a phoney. Even his mantan is phoney. And the rest are apologists. Ya don't like it cause it doesn't have YOUR idea..then say it.

I agree... It's ridiculous and furthermore, blaming Pelosi doesn't make them look good at all, anyway. If anyone decided to vote for or against a bill out of anger or emotion towards someone rather than vote for the good of the country, then they shouldn't even be allowed to be a part of our government. How child-like, irresponsible and shameful. The alternate, that the individual made a decision based on what they believed, would be a far better reason for someone to vote the way they did.

But it was rich. The Republicans have the bill in their hands, do not deliver the votes they had to and could have and then have the audacity to blame Democrats for it not passing. Awesome.

I would have had more respect for the Republicans if they had come out and said that they voted against this on principle. But they sounded like children when they blamed a speech. (no offense meant to children)

Isn't it amazing how a crisis will bring out the best in some people and the worst in others? We'd do well to take note and remember on election day.

Yes, I thought yesterday that the GOP were being sniveling cowards when they blamed the defeat of this bill on Nancy Pelosi's speech. They lost the opportunity to claim they acted out of any principle. Perhaps it didn't occur to them that anyone would even believe that.

However, don't put any faith in Michelle Bachmann to bring principle to the GOP -- the woman's so partisan she only breathes through her right nostril. Here's Bachmann's statement about global warming:

"[Pelosi] is committed to her global warming fanaticism to the point where she has said that she's just trying to save the planet. We all know that someone did that over 2,000 years ago, they saved the planet -- we didn't need Nancy Pelosi to do that."

Oh, good. The planet was saved 2,000 years ago.

So lets just go to heaven now, shall we? I'm sick of this crappy messed up planet and nobody seems to want to act responsibly because of HEAVEN.

Terrific.

Amen, Mr. Bachmann. Those Newtsian crybabies were making me sick and making us look even worse as a country. I am not a Republican -- but so what -- people worthy of admiration come in all "stripes".

What a bunch of DAMNED LIARS! To get on TV and say that Pelosi's speech "upset them" so they voted no is unbelievable. They should all lose their jobs.

Talk about partisanship. I hope the states affected will vote these bastards out in November. They put their childish egos first and the country last.

Now that we know the GOP leadership 'makes things up', one has to wonder whether this is yet again, another example of their 'trickle down' leadership model, that comes from the very TOP of the party.

That vote was counted and collected by Gingrich long before the Pelosi minute. Too bad the dems have no vote counters, arm twisters, and knee cappers, just Hoyer quoting Spira Agnew, yikes.
