McCain: Now Is Not The Time For Blame, But I Blame Obama

I Like ItI Don’t Like It

At 5:15 p.m Monday evening, Sen. John McCain addressed a pool of reporters in Ohio, declaring that it was not the appropriate time or place for people to cast blame on Congress' failure to pass an economic bailout package.

"Now is not the time to affix the blame. It's time to fix the problem. I would hope that all our leaders, all of them, can put aside short-term political goals and do what's in the best interests of the American people."

It was an utter farce of a call for political level-headedness. The very sentence before McCain uttered those words, he lambasted "Senator Obama and his allies in Congress" for infusing "unnecessary partisanship into the process."

Watch:

Ten minutes later, the Republican National Committee blasted out an email with the following subject header: "Obama Stood By, Did Nothing, And Showed No Leadership On The Bailout Negotiations."

Ten minutes after that, McCain's economic adviser, Douglas Holtz-Eakin blamed Democrats in the Congress for foiling the bill.

"Today that process broke down and it broke down quite frankly from partisan attacks from Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi on the floor," he said, "and quite frankly after a partisan attack, Republicans chose to fold their cards and rather than rise above those attacks they chose to walk away from the bill."

Story continues below

In fact, slightly more than an hour before McCain made his plea to cast political conflicts aside, his campaign -- through Holtz-Eakin -- was ripping Obama for a failure of leadership on the issue.

"Barack Obama failed to lead, phoned it in, attacked John McCain, and refused to even say if he supported the final bill," he said.

Asked to explain the seeming incongruity of it all, Holtz Eakin was evasive.

"I have sat in frustration and watched the tone of the attack over John McCain as he was accused of injecting presidential politics," he said, "when in fact he made every effort not to inject himself into the Senate and House negotiations... he has done in my estimation the finest of jobs in this, taking a process that was dead in the water and bring it to a vote today."

Now, attacking the opposition while simultaneously putting your hands up in innocence is nothing new in politics. But the actions of the McCain campaign late Monday indicate, at the very least, that they recognize a problematic narrative developing in political and media circles. The Senator wagered heavily on "suspending" his campaign, even taking credit for a bailout passage Sunday and Monday. In order to not seem political, he clung to the idea that he was forging a bipartisan compromise. When the proposal fell short of passage he didn't want the responsibility anymore, but the campaign still doesn't want to look like it's making electoral hay out of the crisis. And so, one gets these disjointed statements.

How can anyone look at this mess of a human and say, "Gee, that's the guy I want to lead my country?" Why is it so hard for so many to see how mentally disturbed McCain is? Is it because the 'other guy' is black?

Being black is not the only reason for his numbers, it's also becasue he's not a right wing religious zealot who is afraid of God.

Bless his heart....but he is a flippin joke! He is unraveling as we watch. He is now hunkered down with Sarah at his AZ home (veep camp) and they are doing flash cards. I think SNL should do a skit about that! Can't you just see it???? John holding up the card and Sarah trying to come up with a complete sentence. :) Sorry....I'm normallly civil but this election cycle has me wound up. Bump this idea to SNL. I know some of you on here can do that.

SOMEBODY NEEDS TO SLAP OBAMA ACROSS THE FACE TO WAKE HIM UP, THEN LET HIM KNOW THIS IS A B-R-A-W-L NOT A D-A-N-C-E, AND THE DESPERATE REPUBLICANS ARE GOING TO LIE, ACCUSE, ATTACK, AND - YES - PLAY THE RACE CARD BETWEEN NOW AND ELECTION DAY; AND IF OBAMA HAS A-N-Y CHANCE TO WIN, HE'S GOTTA HIT BACK THEN A-T-T-A-C-K THE BUSH/MCCAIN CABAL. I AM TIRED OF DEMOCRATS LOSING PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS BY BEING PC WHEN REPUBLICANS ACT LIKE THUGS, AND I AM AFRAID IT'S HAPPENING AGAIN WITH OBAMA.

I could not agree more. Yet in doing so, he must not appear as the 'angry black man' and he must remain presidential and above the frey. Perhaps he simply is too young and inexperienced to create that balance. McCain lies at every turn about him and Obama cannot stay caught up in defending himself against this abundance of b.s. Just call it what it is, a lie, or untrue, and move on to point out the many defects in McCain and Palin.

It’s 3 a.m., and the phone in the White House rings, a few months into 2009,. And the voice on the line says, "Several big hedge funds are about to fail and there’s likely to be chaos when the market opens." Whom do you trust to take that call? Barrack Obama or John McCain.

Now what do we know about the readiness of the two men most likely to end up taking that call? Well, Barack Obama seems well informed and sensible about matters economic and financial. John McCain, on the other hand, SCARY! ....NOT FIT FOR COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF!!!

Every time Sen. McCain opens his mouth, more voters swing to the Democrats. I wonder if he even knows how much he is damaging himself and the GOP by speaking out. No wonder her handlers are afraid to let Palin go out alone in public. If an old Republican Senator like McCain can't speak intelligently in public, what chance does Palin have.

Wishful thinking.
Those of us paying attention understand how weak the democrats look after this fiasco.

They have a majority and should be able to get a lot accomplished. But instead they can't accomplish anything.

The president may be a republican, but this is a 3-branch system of government. Pelosi has no excuse.

In the Senate, there are 49 Democrats, 49 Republicans and 2 Independents (that caucus with the Democrats).

It is a majority in name only, the Republicans have enough votes to obstruct everything.

the Dems provide 2/3 of the vote when the agreement was to go 50/50. No my friend, Pelosi made no excuse because she more than fullfilled her part of the bargain.

The republicans dropped the ball on this one and their excuse was Pelosi hurt our feelings.

A leader takes responsibility when a mission fails or is accomplished. When McCain starts blaming Obama and Dems, he does not look like a leader, but a follower of his failed Republican Party. McCain is frightening. If we are in war, and the mission failed, is he going to blame the generals who carried out the commands of the Commander-In-Chief? McCain, you should know better than that considering you have been a POW and all.

Then Pelosi should be taking all the blame. She is presiding over a democratically controlled House. She should be able to pass any bill she wants. If Bush doesn't want to sign it, he can tell us why.

This is a failure of Democratic leadership. Sorry if you don't like it, this being an election year and all, but there it is.

She should take the blame because the Republicans voted against it, interesting? Try again.

Once again (and for the last time), this is not the Democrats' mess. This is not the Democrats bill. You want the Democrats to take the responsibility of a bill to give a reckless idiot $700 billion to play with? It has to be bipartisan or it won't pass.

End of story.

Who are you voting for anyway, just out of interest?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:09 AM on 09/30/2008

Ok, I'll try to make this simple for you. It's Bush’s mess and last time I checked HE was still President. It wasn’t the Democrats who suggested the $700 billion bailout plan. According to Bush & Co, there was no time for significant changes to the plan (remember the President went on TV and said the sky was falling), just enough time to make enough changes to it to get it through.
Many Democrats don’t believe that Wall St should be bailed out and their constituents don’t believe so either. Their role is to do the will of the people.
So, some Democrats were willing to go along with it. In fact a small majority of Democrats. People did the numbers and considering that it was a bipartisan bill, there were enough numbers on both sides in agreement for the Bill to pass. Many Republicans reneged on their agreement to support the bill when it came to voting, using the Speakers’ speech as a smokescreen.

McCain said he had it all sorted out. He didn’t, but he can’t accept it.

a republican president and his republican advisors and officials propose a bill that is also fully backed by the republican candidate and 60% of republican members of congress vote against it while 60% of democrats (the opposition!) vote in favor.

i would have thought that the republican president and his potential republican successor would have the leverage and influence on their own party to at least get a majority among their own members.

so where exactly lies the lack of leadership here?

Are all of McCain's surrogates either developmentally disabled (Gramm) or drunks (this guy)...??? He looks like he's been hittin' the bottle a little hard lately -- maybe that's the McCain 'strategery' in the wake of Bush -- the new erratic economics has replaced 'morning in America'...

What crisis? We're still here.

If you want to blame someone for failure on this bill, I think you must look toward the Democratically controlled House and its Speaker. They have a majority. They should be able to pass a bill that will help Americans. If the President doesn't want to sign it, he can explain why to the people.

Now it is Pelosi and Obama with egg on their face. The republicans do that voodoo that they do so well. And democrats just sit there looking like idiots.

This is BAD news for Obama lovers.

Care to explain why a majority democratic House can't pass a bill that will help Americans?

And don't tell me Bush wouldn't sign it because frankly we can't know that.

So let's get this straight:

Bill passes = Great for McCain, because, you know, he suspended is campaign to write it.
Bill doesn't pass = Great for McCain, because he had nothing to do with it.

Perfect logic. no wonder your campaign is doing so well.

And about that 'voodoo', Sarah might be able to recommend a preacher for that!

I don't support McCain and the bill didn't pass.

And the bill not passing isn't great for either candidate, but worse for the democrat since it is his party running Congress.

The republicans set the trap and the democrats take the bait. Every time.

Is is getting very difficult, very difficult to feel anything but contempt for John McCain. I know all politicians lie, and that the Clintons do it with ease, but McCain never stops lying.

Does he thing we are stupid? Tjos amgry. bitter, aging, delusional, confused demagogue deserved not just to be defeated, but to be laughed it. What a ridiculous characture he has allowed himself to become.

Funny, it the very future of our nation was not at stake.

We are very near the time Americans need to take to the streets and take our nation back. Bush, Clinton, McCain have sold it to the corporations and we are facing their greedy disaster.

In CRISIS can we stand FOUR MONTHS of a POWERLESS PRESIDENT and VICE PRESIDENT?

No! They can not control Their OWN REPUB HOUSE and They are causing MORE DAMAGE!

1. False Statements to Congress and the American People regarding IRAQ.
2. Non-Regulation of Stock, Bond, Banking, and Oil.
3. Non-Enforcement of SEC Rules on "Naked Shorts" that drove Companies to Bankruptcy and Merger.
4. Excessive Leveraging of Oil Market to Force Oil to Record Highs.
5. Non-Regulation of Mortgage Industry that lead to "TRICK" Loans and lost homes.
6. Non-Regulation of Derivatives which combine HIGH RISK LOANS together and Sell as Low Risk.
7. Non-Enforcement of Rules and Regulations in ALL INDUSTRIES.
8. Excessive Executive Pay for POOR PERFORMANCE.

There is literally REAMS of INFORMATION including Video, Audio, Text, Phone, and email evidence to convict these perpetrators.
