I Like ItI Don’t Like It

At 5:15 p.m Monday evening, Sen. John McCain addressed a pool of reporters in Ohio, declaring that it was not the appropriate time or place for people to cast blame on Congress' failure to pass an economic bailout package.

"Now is not the time to affix the blame. It's time to fix the problem. I would hope that all our leaders, all of them, can put aside short-term political goals and do what's in the best interests of the American people."

It was an utter farce of a call for political level-headedness. The very sentence before McCain uttered those words, he lambasted "Senator Obama and his allies in Congress" for infusing "unnecessary partisanship into the process."

Watch:

Ten minutes later, the Republican National Committee blasted out an email with the following subject header: "Obama Stood By, Did Nothing, And Showed No Leadership On The Bailout Negotiations."

Ten minutes after that, McCain's economic adviser, Douglas Holtz-Eakin blamed Democrats in the Congress for foiling the bill.

"Today that process broke down and it broke down quite frankly from partisan attacks from Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi on the floor," he said, "and quite frankly after a partisan attack, Republicans chose to fold their cards and rather than rise above those attacks they chose to walk away from the bill."

Story continues below

In fact, slightly more than an hour before McCain made his plea to cast political conflicts aside, his campaign -- through Holtz-Eakin -- was ripping Obama for a failure of leadership on the issue.

"Barack Obama failed to lead, phoned it in, attacked John McCain, and refused to even say if he supported the final bill," he said.

Asked to explain the seeming incongruity of it all, Holtz Eakin was evasive.

"I have sat in frustration and watched the tone of the attack over John McCain as he was accused of injecting presidential politics," he said, "when in fact he made every effort not to inject himself into the Senate and House negotiations... he has done in my estimation the finest of jobs in this, taking a process that was dead in the water and bring it to a vote today."

Now, attacking the opposition while simultaneously putting your hands up in innocence is nothing new in politics. But the actions of the McCain campaign late Monday indicate, at the very least, that they recognize a problematic narrative developing in political and media circles. The Senator wagered heavily on "suspending" his campaign, even taking credit for a bailout passage Sunday and Monday. In order to not seem political, he clung to the idea that he was forging a bipartisan compromise. When the proposal fell short of passage he didn't want the responsibility anymore, but the campaign still doesn't want to look like it's making electoral hay out of the crisis. And so, one gets these disjointed statements.

John McCain's many reactions to the economic crisis facing the country is a real head scratcher. It's like the economy is a pinata, and he's blindfolded and holding a stick. Look out!

As an adult paying attention, McCain's ruddlerless ship campaign has run aground about eight times over the past four days! Then to have McCain and his surrogates blame O when his grandstanding backfires is some over-the-top major league bull sh*t. McNutty could be our next president.

It's the end of the GOP as we know it...and I feel fine.

McCain acts more and more like a scenile, desperate old man! After he looses this election he's going to have nothing but left but his billions, because he's lied and used and abused everyone during his campaign.

McCain loses his temper, calls his wife an unspeakable word (in front of journalists), dumps his injured and faithful wife for the equivalent of Paris Hilton (blonde model/well-connected heiress), calls for the head of a guy before even knowing what the guy has apparently done wrong, thinks its funny to tell purile jokes about women being raped or the lineage of a president's daughter, sings songs about bombing another country, and attacks the patriotism of anyone who disagrees with him. Look at the snears in the photo of his supporters.

Obama lights up when he sees his wife, takes time out of his campaign to vacation with his family, rushes to a baby in a crowd, and gave up a career on Wall Street to work out of a church basement helping people who were being laid off.

Radiating calmness, kindness and empathy has a way of attracting people to you. McCain would never understand that, so he is left only to mock the adoration that people feel toward Obama, or denigrate sacrifices that Obama has made throughout his life in service of others.

Obama supporters should feel pride. We value the goodness that emanates from Obama. I want my children to have a president that they can look up to - one who treats all people with respect, especially the woman in his life.

I feel for those who say that McCain resonates with their "values".

I loved your post and could not agree more.
I just finished reading the article in 'More' magazine about Michelle. You talk about a family who genuinely embraces family values!! I'm so proud of our next first family.
Like a lot of you, I remember hearing Michelle speak about the little girl in the beauty parlor months and months ago on the Obama site. In South Caroline, that little African-American girl said to Michelle "Mrs. Obama - do you realize that if Barack wins, it will be historical?"
"What would that mean to you Michelle asked?
"It will mean I can dream anything for myself".

All of the naysayers can do the "all he's about is a speech". But he represents so much more. I know that some are responding emotively in a good way to our posts and certainly some are not. But I do believe they'll all begin to see that we can create a better America - gosh knows we need a better America!

Blah blah blah. McCain opens his mouth and says something to contradict what he said before. Wait 5 minutes or til the wind shifts and he'll contradict what he said in response to what he said before.
Round and round we go.

He's a doddering, desperate old man who will do anything to win even if it means talking out of both sides of his mouth at once. Tell him he could be President and he'll juggle for you, too.

If he wins at this point, it's racism. It can't be smarts, judgement, or Presidential demeanor. What a grasping old guy he turned out to be.

I don't think you can make this stick on Mac, simply because O has exited, stage left.

Neither of them have come up with any winning game plan for their respective parties.

Mac has made so many switcharoos in the past 10 days...I don't even think
he knows if the economy is strong or if we are in a crisis. His brain is weak.
He's hopeless. Even Repubs wonder what he's doing. Mac is whack!

Amazing that we can see things so differently. I've voted repub in the past. Mac makes my stomach turn. He's a well of lies and deception. M and O are not on the committee involved. O encouraged 2/3 of the Dems to support it. M only got 1/3 of the repubs to support it. I think the numbers are simple. Mac is a loser and always will be.

Ah but the problem is, McCain "suspended" and announced he was riding in to save the day and then spent the time before the vote announcing he was the only guy who could provide the winning game plan, announced he had provided the winning game plan, and then had his surrogates announce it and announce it and announce it. Until it failed.

Yes. It sticks to Mac. Because he told us it was his. And told us and told us and told us. Let it go Ann.

It sticks to McCain because McCain and Mitt Romney were claiming he had it in the bag right before voting started. Usually people like you wait a while before trying to rewrite history. BTW the Democrats delivered a majority of votes on their side as promised.

Listening to the McBush campaign people is like listening to cultists. Their leader never does wrong and McBush is perfect and anyone who says different is an elitist liberal minion of the liberal media out to turn America over to the terrorists.

They are not just reeking of desperation they are showing signs of the smell from the decay of a dead body.

McBush and Pa-lyin' are the two worst republican nominees in......lessee here....2+2, ...ummm.. carry the 1, divide by....ummmm EIGHT YEARS!!!

If McCain forgot that he blamed Obama the sentence before saying now is not the time to blame, I wouldn't be surprised if he forgot where he parked his car, too. This is both scary and sick. Neither he nor Palin are playing with a full deck of political integrity, let alone facts. Let's just hope they keep up the good work of UNRAVELLING right before our eyes BEFORE the election.

McCain failed. He couldn't get the house republicans to vote in any way that might jeopardize them in the upcoming congressional elections. They don't respect John McCain and don't think he will win the upcoming election.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

I agree. But from all reports, he knew and basically, just listened.

But I do agree with you.

He can't do much more than what he's done, which is try to iron out the sticking points.

I also think he's right. Pelosi, aka Obama, blew this.

But most important, this is a congressional failure. They all have shown us their colors, Democrats and Republicans.

They favor their jobs more than us.

No way about Pelosi & Omama. This was a diss for McCain. It was a Repub. bill, McCain was already taking credit for it before the vote happened. Blaming the Pelosi speech makes them either look like cry-babies or liars.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:21 AM on 09/30/2008

I disagree. This was a Republican mess that asked Dems to clean it up for them and they were too coward to put in their vote to clean up their own mess.

Now they are blaming the failure on the Dems and Obama!!! The Republicans are coward babies that have not earned their right to be leading this nation. McCain did the same thing today and should be ashamed of himself. McCain acts like a child and frankly unpresidential.

Out with the nay Republicans and McCain. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!

PumaAnn, why do you equate Pelosi with Obama? If Hillary were the Democratic candidate would she also equal Pelosi? Nancy Pelosi is a failure at her job as far as I'm concerned and I doubt she takes any direction from Obama or his campaign or anyone else with any sense.
You are right about the failure of Congress. The Dems cave in to Bush and the repubs are eating themselves alive and no one gives a flying duck about the people who voted for them, unless of course they are up for re-election.
The only way we, the people, are going to get anything done for our own benefit is to hire some lobbyists to lobby the candidates we voted into office to get things done for us.
I am so angry at this crap.
