I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Gawker, Marc Ambinder and our own Rachel Sklar note that the New Yorker is poking some fun at Sarah Palin for her rather dubious claim that Alaska's proximity to Russia gives her foreign policy experience. Scroll down for a full size image of the cover.

She should have her own reality show " The Frontier Family" or "The Ditsy Power Hungry Mama".

If I look outside the window of my office, I can see an Ikea. I am TOTALLY qualified to speak on matters involving Sweden.

Oh that's nothing. I live in Vegas and can clearly see the Eiffel Tower at Paris, the Planet Hollywood (which used to be the Aladdin), Luxor and Mandalay Bay.

This obviously gives me European, Middle Eastern, and Southeast Asian experience on the Palin Scale.

Bonus: I made chicken enchiladas last night so I'm a Latin American specialist as well.

it is quite clear that you should be the ambassador to the UN though the enchillada thing is a bit of a reach

Wow! This is great. Thank you Sarah Palin. I can see the stars at night-I guess that makes me an atrophysicist-and if I go down to the ocean and see the fish-that makes me a marine biologist. Who knew!

Sorry, but I have you trumped. I look out my window and, on most evenings, have a fantastic view of the stars. NASA should be calling any moment.

I think she is perfect candidate for TV show Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?
Yes, she could see Russia from her back window... Have she studied well in school, she would’ve known that she is facing Siberia – least populated area in Russia. And Putin have nothing else to do as to rear his head to frighten Sarah.

It would be interesting to interview some Russians and hear their responses about Palin seeing their country from her house and how she defends Alaska's airspace.

Unlike the cover that featured the Obamas, this is a good example of political satire. Palin herself made these claims, they weren't attributed to her by media talking heads and political pundits.

The fact that Palin's own words were laugh lines in the Tina Fey sketch on Sat should send critically thinking Repubs running away from this ticket. The debate on Thursday should provide a wealth of material for this Sat's show as well. Maybe they will just use actual debate footage, and they can give Tina the night off.

I applaud the New Yorker for NOT buckling under to the GOP influence like other magazines have.BRAVO !!! Now if we could only get the TRUTH about the stalled and corrupted "GOP' influences on the Trooper/misuse of Office investigation on Palin in Alaska ......

"critically thinking republicans"...........I think those are more popularly known as Obama Supporters. ;)

Since they found the Obama's so satirical, I was wondering when they'd get around to the McCain camp. It's still a little more sensitive than the Obama cover.

I hope in the debate that she's asked if she can come up with a way to create a national permanent dividend fund for the rest of us like the one they have in Alaska. Sure...

Is that the one where whenever you buy gasoline you send a little money to Alaska? Isn't that like a tax? Tax and spend republicans.

Actually this is my first laugh today and it's already time to sleep. Reminds of a morning, I
stood on the balcony of a friend's apartment in Hong Kong, saw a foggy outline of mainland
China, and later was convinced that I had been there. LOL!

Am I trying too hard or is this also reminiscent of NY's famous map cover where NY city is half the map, NJ is another third, the rest of the USA is squezed into a couple inches and Asia barely peeks over the horizon?

Funny I haven't heard much from her about Canada. You can see Canada from parts of Alaska too. And that nasty Stephen Harper keeps rearing his ugly head and interfering with the northern lights. That big nose and matching mouth of his keep getting in the way. His party is siding with the Democrats over NAFTA, even though he is a staunch supporter of Free Markets and Republican conservateive ideals, and you have to keep an eye on that guy and his sneaky policies!

This great cover is a take on a wonderful New Yorker cover from the 50's(?) showing the World as seen by a New Yorker. You could see across Manhattan, the Hudson, New Jersey to California and the Pacific Ocean to Russia in the background in the original. Nobody's picking on ms. palin.

It is not Palin's inexperience in foreign affairs that scares me but the utter lack of knowledge of such of McCain himself. When it comes to the subject he is just a 72 years old military academy cadet eager and ready to jump into any fight to prove his testosterone.
His grumpy aggressive stance is completely baffling for a statesman of his age and alleged experience.
His attacks on Obama are childish. His impulsive jerky moves like "suspending" his campaign are borderline psychotic.
A dangerous man.
I am a Conservative Republican, BTW and I put Constitution, honor and justice, not the country, first. "Country first" said in a country who occupies two foreign lands sounds to close to "Deutschland Uber Alles".

We do not have a choice this time. Obama may not be my first choice, be as of today he i sthe only one.
McCain or that Alaskan joker could get us into a nuclear war over nothing.

Glad I'm not the only one who's noticed an eerie resemblance of recent GOP propaganda to Germany in the 30's. Nationalism, creating an "other" (the out-of-touch elite, the left-wing biased media, islamic terrorists, etc.) to blame for all problems, the whisper campaigns (Hussein, Hussein, Hussein), playing on emotion and fear (the 9/11 video at the convention) and more.

I, too, was a Republican. While I still believe in many of those values - free markets and individual liberty chief among them - the Republican party stopped representing those values a long time ago.

Oh, no, I think we will get the party back. Somewhere between Buchanan and Ron Paul lies a beautiful land where no neocon lurks. It may be that, tragically, the military fiasco in Iraq is what the country needs to come back to its senses, reverse our crazy foreign policy and put the perpetrators of it on trial.

And, BTW, I do not believe in bipartisanship (why have two parties then?) but I believe in civility and mutual respect. Obama's background in academic world where the inability to respect your opponent's view is a sign of boorishness served him well during the last debate and I believe he will be the President who will revive the civility and substance into the our national politics.

If you look at Wasilla, Alaska on Google Earth, you will see that Russia is over 500 miles from Wasilla. There are many cities intervening, like Stebbins and Nome. Plus there are a lot of mountains, and Wasilla is only 340 feet above sea level, about ten times the elevation of New York City, but you still can't see Russia from Wasilla. It is also closer to Canada than anything else. Perhaps she confused the Canadian Mounted Police with the Militsiya.

Does anyone remember the status of the country say 8 years ago! A surplus of say 5 trillion. Unemployment lowest in decades? Now contrast to today or even the last 8 years! The Bush Administration has to be the worst in U.S. history and senator McCain was part of the problem the entire time with Bush step by step, so he spoke out about the surge too bad it was for the wrong war. In choosing gov. Palin McCain may have solitified his base but he has alienated independents like myself. She is obviously under qualified to even be considered a mayor of a small town after they loose in Nov her political career is finished.
