Letterman

David Letterman Monday continued to demonstrate to John McCain that lying to the late night host is never a good idea.

In his monologue, Letterman used a joke about the bailout to hit McCain for canceling last week, saying, "Senator John McCain is in favor of the bailout. He loves bailouts — he bailed out on me."

Later, in an interview with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Letterman continued going after McCain, mentioning that not only did McCain not get on a plane to Washington when he told Letterman he was, but he also stayed the night in New York to speak to the UN the following morning.

"The information I was dealing with apparently was not true," Letterman said.

"Well I don't care for that at all," Louis-Dreyfus said. "I think that that was very rude, very bad manners, and so in an effort to show my support for you and to set the universe straight, I also scheduled an interview for exactly this time right now — and I'm not showing up for it."

Louis-Dreyfus explained that the interview she was skipping was one with Katie Couric on the "CBS Evening News" — the same show McCain ditched Letterman to appear on — which allowed Letterman to show the internal CBS news feed with Couric alone at her desk, a move that surely won't make him any more friends at the network.

After the election, McCain will have plenty of free time to do the Letterman Show.

I hope David Letterman doesn't let McCain get away with his 100% truthful claim during this campaign.

David Letterman is the king of the joke told 500 ways long after it should stop being funny but it's still funny how he does it.

He'll ride this one clear into next year.

Timing is critical to a good comic. Dave, it might be time to move on, this is getting old. You were badly treated, but everyone out here in your audience does not share your sense of personal outrage. Enough.

I LOVES ME SOME PERSONAL OUTRAGE!

they should share it....man want to be POTUS and his word means nothing ..amd he lies
Your problem if you like people like that.....don't..please don't make the rest of us feel wrong .

Agreed. Finally America is expressing their disapproval of Pres. Clinton whose word ,not to mention his wedding vows, meant nothing to him. I think..Oh wait a minute, were you talking about the Hon. John McCain ? Yeah , he finished n interview and went to prep for a Senate meeting in D.C. , billing on Letterman. And that egotistical pantload Letterman is still having a tantrum because someone dared to cancel on him. Tel me again what contribution of value has he made since he was was given new life with that heart operation? Or before the operation? That's what I thought. Known as one of the meanest men in entertainment , he is the master of the tantrum. Maybe the meanness is why he has never been number one vs. Leno. My guess is that Leno will still beat him after he retires. People sense meanness and don't reward it. What is more important to you - a national financial crisis or appearing on Letterman. And truly , if he had gone on Letterman, how many of you and your Daily Kos comrades would be lambasting him for being on TV and cracking jokes while the country went down the tubes? Please don't make the rest of us fel wrong with your hypocrisy.

Personally, I think it's hilarious that he keeps mentioning it!

It'll be his leitmotiv until way past the elections -- whether McCain wins or not.

If you can't tell that Letterman is a master of *comic* timing from the above clip, don't go into comedy. I don't care who he's making fun of, his relaxed and understated delivery always manages to at least get chuckles. Watching Dave Letterman do comedy is like watching a great athlete, who makes their incredible artistry look easy.

See the above post about Letterman telling the same joke 500 times, I think that person said it well.

And I thought Letterman's mentor, Johnny Carson, was vindictive. Sheesh! Maybe Joan Rivers can call up McCain to commiserate with him about being shunned by a lion of late night.

If McCain bailed for a good reason, Dave wouldn't have said a word. He bailed for political gamesmanship, on one hour notice, and lied to boot. Do you remember Bush on Letterman, making "jokes'" about Dave getting his chest cracked open and showing Bush's true, cold-hearted colors? Dave has been skewering him ever since, and good for him! Yes, he knows it will alienate a good part of his audience, and he doesn't care.
This is the same guy who invited a dying Warren Zevon on his show for the complete hour to pay tribute to him, despite knowing his ratings would suffer badly. Can you see Leno doing that?

"If McCain bailed for a good reason, Dave wouldn't have said a word."

I disagree completely. I think Letterman would have handled it the same way, only everyone would have gotten that it was a joke. He's a joker, and would have done it either way, assuming that folks would "get it"! And either way, it would have been very funny...only this way it's funny AND an embarrassment for McCain!

I'm not so sure. While Dave might made a mild joke about it--something more or less at his own expense, like "Oh, sure! Saving the country's more important than doing an interview with me!"--I don't think he'd keep on about it like he is now. However, McCain lied and now Dave feels betrayed and is super pissed. Oh well. They'll both live.
