Over the last few weeks, the issues of John McCain's age and health have been pushed, with much resistance, back into the heart of the political discussion. Prompted in part by the selection of Sarah Palin as the Republican vice presidential candidate, the topic crested with the release of a political advertisement calling attention to McCain's history of skin cancer and the need for more information about his medical records.

Cable news stations were too skittish to run the spot, produced by Brave New PAC. CNN refused to air it, Fox's Bill O'Reilly called it shameful, and MSNBC, which initially aired the ad, reversed course and took it off the air.

All of which has come to the anger and befuddlement of Democrats as well as members of the medical community, both of whom ask a very basic question: what more important information is needed to elect a president other than his fitness for office?

"I don't see anything wrong with opening up the discussion," said Ronald Bronow, former chief of dermatology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. "What we want to know is, what stage is this melanoma? Particularly with the prospect of the vice president becoming the president... If you are an objective physician, you have to be concerned about this."

With just weeks before election day, McCain's campaign says it has released all of the information needed to make a thorough assessment of his health, and then some. In late May, the Senator allowed the vetting of over 1,000 pages of his records that showed him in generally good condition despite having skin cancer eight years ago. But the process was far from transparent.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's medical correspondent who was one of only a handful of reporters allowed into the review, summarized the problems to the Huffington Post:

"We were given three hours to go over 1,200 pages of records. That is a lot to go through. It was very sort of cloak and dagger and I'm sure they had their reasons. Given that I had my medical training, I was able to hone in on what it thought was important more quickly. But the pages weren't numbered, so I had no way of knowing what was missing... As a reporter I can only comment on what I saw but I can't say by any means that this was complete... As far as the secretiveness of it, what they said to us is that you can't take anything out of the room, but you could make notes. So it was a lot to go through in a short period of time."

Provided with only a scant review of the information, questions have begun to rise as to the danger of McCain's most recent bout with cancer. Bronow noted that there are two reports detailing the stage of McCain's latest (his fourth) bout with melanoma. One report put it at a stage 2a, which has a relatively high five-year survival rate; another put it at a stage 3b, which is much more dire in nature.

"As a dermatologist, if I hear about a stage three melanoma, I say 'My God this guy is walking on nails here," said Bronow. "There is that much difference between a stage 2 and a stage 3."

Asked to detail his notes, Gupta said the pathology report - which lists the size and other attributes of the cancer removed - indicated a stage 2a:

"It was 2 centimeters across, 0.22 centimeters deep, and not ulcerated, which gives him a 66 percent survival rate over ten years. Melanoma is a particularly aggressive cancer. Mainly because skin is the largest organ in the body it can spread to the lungs, liver and the brain... Most of the occurrences will occur right away. I am reassured by the fact that it has been eight years now and there hasn't been a reemergence of that melanoma."

And yet, the debate over the status of McCain's health is accompanied by a separate, equally significant argument: mainly, what level of medical disclosure should voters demand of presidential candidates? As Bronow noted, Barack Obama has given the public far less information on his health than McCain - a one-page report detailing the last 21 years of care he has received.

"Let's have the same thing for him," he said. "Let's have a complete disclosure of everything. It isn't just McCain."

And as Gupta argued, there is something sadly ironic with the fact that physicians and airline pilots are required to release medical records, but not the would-be president of the United States.

"[Former Senator] Paul Tsongas -- when he ran for office in 1992, he was a cancer survivor at that point, but said he had been cured," recalled Gupta. "We now know that had he been elected to a second term, he would have died in office. It was Tsongas who went to Clinton and said we should really have a requirement for the release of physical and mental medical records. Which, looking back now, is pretty remarkable."

This guy has a 1000 page medical record? Do we actually NEED to know what's in there, or is the fact that it's a 1000 pages long enough to tell the story?

Republicans need to identify who will be running the country in a Palin administration. Dick Cheney is too old.

If he hadn't picked such a dangerous and insulting to all women VP candidate maybe we wouldn't care so much. I too also hope he is in good health but I question his mental state having picked Appalling Palin.

Been watching McCain's face and neck with intense curiosity. My brother died of SSC/HN cancer.I Saw him everyday for two and a half months before death. I observe about Mc Cain:

The left eye affected; the nerves, change in shape of the lid , watery lower lid. All static.

Nerves from eye to jawline appear in a paralyzed state. Flat, non responsive when he moves his face. (This is not botox, either.) Color pastey.

Holds head away from the left side of his face. Camera shots focus on the right side.

His 'jowl' is getting a larger, rounder shape like a lump under his already scar tissue affected post surgical area; slowly but steadily growing more pronounced.
As left eye affected, nerves leading to ear possibly being affected. He turns his head to hear or puts his hand up to his left ear now more and more.

If nerves of eye, ear now compromised.,nerves to neck and shoulder, unfortuantely, brain are also slowly (or not so slowly) affected. Atrophy from previous surgeries.

Increased pain and disability presents. Increased pain meds needed.

From experience and knowledge through a World Class Head & Neck Oncology/Otolaryngology Clinic in two highly respected US research Universities and ACS Comprehensive Cancer Centers.

Recurrence harvests a big percentage of survival. At the look of things we could see maybe two years time for a 3b-4a diagnosis. Two years.

This is serious and a sad reality...for everyone affected...John McCain first.

The other thing, that I haven't heard mentioned, is his speech, which has definitely been slurred lately. He manages to hide it a bit with his general tone, but his pronunciation definitely is not up to par.

And yes, his left eye (and, I think, much of the left side of his face) doesn't appear to be working well.

But he's definitely the kind of "regular guy" I'd sit down with for a dose of chemo.

"Palin 09!"

And people don't just die one day, the dying process can be long and painful for the patient as well as loved ones-and in McCain's case the country-How would it be decided when he was unable to perform the duties of president? This could be pretty horrible for everyone.

So. Matt Damon's concern was correct.
We need to seriously consider whether or not Palin is actually able to be the President of the United States.

All candidates for president and vice president should be given I.Q/health exams by an independent source once their intentions to run are announced. The questions remains, who determines whether the findings disqualify them.

WE need to acknowledge what Paul S. suggested re the conditions such as cancer in our candidates. We need not be so aggressive, if the candidates DO not cooperate in submitting requested medical records, then, REPORT it so folks won't vote them in office. At this point and in This way, perhaps the candidate will not try to be so cocky and overbearing, but realize the importance of cooperation with those in Authority pertaining to his/her medical and or other records. Since this 2nd running for POT, it has been said that JMcShame could be suffering from many of the Vietnam bruises that many other Vets are being treated for or have claims in to be treated for. but no one elaborates. Plus, he acts like he was the only Vietnam Vet survivor. This appears to be the root of his anger. But. since we don't know, perhaps He needs to submit his complete records to be reviewed by those in authority until they deem Mission accomplished. JMcC just wants others to go to war, stay in war as if revenge for his condition. No, He doesn't appear to be the one to take care the Vets or any any of the facilities. We know many Vietnam Vets who are still fighting to get claims acknowledged by the VA. WUWT? Let's get the Records needed if not, report it to the voters and their vote will make a difference.

McCain is looking very fatigued, even during the debate last Friday. How is he going to govern the country if he can't even get through the campaign, and it's not even the big push now until Election Day.

Heck there is a 50/50 chance we may not survive McCains first term in office, so what is more important? The fact that McCain or anyone of us may drop over tomorrow or next week or next year, or that there is a 50/50 chance that we will be worse of then we are now when McCain takes office.

Both Obama and McCain should make their medical records available, the sooner the better. The voters have the right to know if these guys can handle the physical and mental pressure that is a 24/7 sure thing.

Sarah Palin should settle her Alaskan abuse charges. before the election. The voting public is entitled to a slate without flawed backgrounds and negative findings..

Sarah Palin needs to release her tax records--and her SAT scores.

Sarah Palin's SAT scores would be a hoot! Bet you'll never see them. I think we should see Cindy McCain's tax records -- that's where the McCain household's money is -- except, of course, for his salary and his monthly social security stipend.

I want his medical records examined (with information of a recent exam) and I want to see Sarah Palin's financial records.

Why the obsession with cancer? It's his mental status that's more important and more questionable.
What he needs is a rigorous psychneurological workup. In fact, after Reagan you'd think that would be required of ALL presidential and VP candidates - regardless of age.
