Sarah Palin said she does not support the morning after pill as a form of contraception, strongly implied that homosexuality was a choice, and could not name a single source of news that she turns to for information, in yet another installment of her interview series with Katie Couric.

Appearing on CBS Evening News, the Alaska Governor seemed calmer than she had been in previous sit downs. But while she only occasionally provided the type of befuddled responses that had even conservatives scratching their heads, her interview was nevertheless shaky.

Asked what newspapers and magazines she reads, Palin - a journalism major in college - could not name one publication.

"I've read most of them, again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media," she said at first. Couric responded, "What, specifically?"

"Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years."

"Can you name a few?"

"I have a vast variety of source where we get our news," Palin said. "Alaska isn't a foreign country, where it's kind of suggested, 'wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C., may be thinking when you live up there in Alaska?' Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America."

Later, when pressed on a variety of cultural issues, Palin provided red meat for religious conservatives. But her answers seemed to fall on the far edge of mainstream political thought. She said she was "unapologetically" pro-life when asked if she opposed abortion even for a 15-year-old raped by her father.

"[I would] counsel that person to choose life despite the horrific, horrific circumstances," she said, before moderating her position a bit: "If you're asking, though, kind of foundationally here, should anyone end up in jail for having an ... abortion, absolutely not. That's nothing I would ever support."

Asked whether she believed that the morning after pill should be outlawed, Palin did not directly address the question, saying only: "Personally, and this isn't a McCain-Palin policy, I would not choose to participate in that kind of contraception."

And quizzed about her position on gay-rights, Palin cited a homosexual friend whom she is close with before noting that she "made a choice" about her sexuality.

"I have," she said, "one of my absolute best friends for the last 30 years who happens to be gay and I love her dearly. And she is not my gay friend. She is one of my best friends who happens to have made a choice that isn't a choice that I would have made."

These positions may, in the long run, endear Palin even more to her conservative following. But combined with her failure to name a source of news she turns to, they are also bound to have people buzzing up through Thursday night's vice presidential debate.

gummy, grownups discuss the issues on their merits and don't call each other names. Ask your parents or your favorite teacher to explain it to you.

Gov. Palin at least values morality highly, while Sen. Obama spits on it. Morality for me is the key to saving our Nation from her ills! That's why I couldn't vote for Obama!

What? are you taking Palin lessons on LOGIC?

Obama does NOT spit on Morality - this is a man who LISTENS and he also READS and then he EXAMINES and he SPEAKS logic and sense and step by step procedures from the base of a problem to the solution.

Palin is DUMB.

Failin Palin does not value morality highly. If she did, she would have refused to charge rape victims for the cost of the rape kit. If she valued morality, she would believe in equality FOR ALL, including gays. If she valued morality, she would tell the truth.
And I'm curious -- specifically, how exactly does Obama "spit" on morality? Give specific examples.

What's up with the "I don't judge Americans and their decisions..." Hope she realize Alaska people (including herself) are Americans too. Are her Assembly of God opinions surfacing? Oops!

I found it interesting she said she reads the newspapers/mags "that have been in front of me" -- that's a very passive response. It implies she doesn't actively seek out the news. Doesn't subscribe.

Basically, I guess she reads whatever's in the waiting room at the doctor's office, on the racks at the supermarket checkout, etc...

She just didn't want to say. She probably reads Cosmopolitan, InStyle, Premiere, People, etc.

There's nothing wrong with that unless you're wanting to be vice president and that's all you read.

yeah, that or she doesn't read. either is likely, and both are ridiculous for a vp nominee.

Good catch on the "put in front of me" comment. I was more taken-aback by her not being able to name a source of new that she reads than the fact that she was saying that she did not MAKE THE choice of what to read. Guess that is why she is so comfortable with not being able to make a CHOICE in ones decisions in life.

This is the kind of 'non-answer answer' that we cannot accept anymore. Barring what Cheney's lawyer believes, the VP is DEFINITELY part of the Executive branch, she'd be second in command of the nation if the R's win, and she cannot be allowed to continue to dance around the questions and mince words.

All that being said, her inability to name a single publication or news outlet is an indication that she may simply not NEED to read anything; she knows what she thinks and nobody can change her mind, new information and cold hard facts included. Why read when you already know everything? This is the kind of anti-intellectual, non-inquisitive, headstrong 'leadership' that brought us to this very sorry moment!

Did anyone else notice that in the global warming section she says that she's not going to blame man's activities on global warming -- instead of, um, vice versa?

Or is that just sexist of me to expect a woman to speak logically?

Why are Americans so afraid of declaring that the emperor has no clothes?!?

Sarah Palin is a vacuous, unqualified, largely uneducated hick from the wilderness outback of Alaska.

She is no more fit to be vice-president than she is to grow wings and fly to the moon!

Like, duh, folks.

It ain't as if I'm not stating the painfully obvious here!

Can we just vote now? Please! These past few weeks have given us enough information to make our decision on whose the better candidate.

CNN went to the island in Alaska where you can see Russia. Funny, Palin has never been there. In fact, many could not even name thier governor. Those that did know who she was didn't even know she had been nominated for VP. This is a place with no TV or phone lines. When Palin's advisors were asked if she would visit there they said that she would like to, but there were many other isolated places in Alsaka that she would also like to vist.

I wonder what percent of Alaska's population is as removed as this. I mean no disrespect, but how does one come up with an 80% favorability rating when areas like this don't even know thier Gov. and could not have answered any polls even if they could.

It is clear that Palin's world is very small indeed.

In the previous part of her interview, she claimed that even though she did not have a passport until 18 months ago (about the same time she became governor????- and had not travelled, she had learned about the "world" through reading. Then when she is asked what she reads t'o keep up with world events she can't or won't answer? Now we really see why the McCain staff picked her. She does the typical spin back to try to turn Katie's simple direct question into a veiled insult towards being from Alaska?? That is so telling of her narsicissim and speaks volumes of why she is the perfect representative for the level of ignorance of the constituency they wish to satisfy.

Now we see why they wanted to keep her under wraps. Now; for the limited amount of exposure she has had to even the very moderate and centrist media organizations she has done nothing but show proof of her lack of qualifications.

No Alaska is not a foreign country so why wouldn't she even read the local newspapers, USA today, Newsweek, Time....something. by not answering doesn't that just say that she lied into our faces. It shows she is perfect for McCain VP because lying is becoming their strongest method in their campaign.

Hopefully.those who are supporting her because they feel they can relate and like her because she says she is like them become disgusted and don't want to be connected with lieing and ignorance.

I thought the Katie Couric interviews were a complet disaster. To not even name one newspaper she reads. All the Repubs pundits keep saying if the McCain handlers let Sarah be Sarah. It seems to be that Sarah is being Sarah in these interviews...an inexperienced nitwit. Even if she comes out okay during the debate it won't matter....people are seeing her like she is...OBAMA 08

According to these pundits, anything disaster by their candidates can be spun as something positive.

COURIC: "Governor Palin, can you name at least one news source you read? I mean, what about, say, Lexus-Nexus?"

PALIN: "Oh, no! The first dude and I are more of the, you know, SUV type! Yah, and we, like, buy AMERICAN!"

How nice that she has a "best friend" who has "chosen" to be gay. What a great friend she must be, NOT supporting her "best friend's" right to marry or protection from discriminatory practices. Does she hope one day her friend will "choose" to be straight? With friends like that, who needs enemies?
