Sarah Palin said she does not support the morning after pill as a form of contraception, strongly implied that homosexuality was a choice, and could not name a single source of news that she turns to for information, in yet another installment of her interview series with Katie Couric.

Appearing on CBS Evening News, the Alaska Governor seemed calmer than she had been in previous sit downs. But while she only occasionally provided the type of befuddled responses that had even conservatives scratching their heads, her interview was nevertheless shaky.

Asked what newspapers and magazines she reads, Palin - a journalism major in college - could not name one publication.

"I've read most of them, again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media," she said at first. Couric responded, "What, specifically?"

"Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years."

"Can you name a few?"

"I have a vast variety of source where we get our news," Palin said. "Alaska isn't a foreign country, where it's kind of suggested, 'wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C., may be thinking when you live up there in Alaska?' Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America."

Later, when pressed on a variety of cultural issues, Palin provided red meat for religious conservatives. But her answers seemed to fall on the far edge of mainstream political thought. She said she was "unapologetically" pro-life when asked if she opposed abortion even for a 15-year-old raped by her father.

"[I would] counsel that person to choose life despite the horrific, horrific circumstances," she said, before moderating her position a bit: "If you're asking, though, kind of foundationally here, should anyone end up in jail for having an ... abortion, absolutely not. That's nothing I would ever support."

Asked whether she believed that the morning after pill should be outlawed, Palin did not directly address the question, saying only: "Personally, and this isn't a McCain-Palin policy, I would not choose to participate in that kind of contraception."

And quizzed about her position on gay-rights, Palin cited a homosexual friend whom she is close with before noting that she "made a choice" about her sexuality.

"I have," she said, "one of my absolute best friends for the last 30 years who happens to be gay and I love her dearly. And she is not my gay friend. She is one of my best friends who happens to have made a choice that isn't a choice that I would have made."

These positions may, in the long run, endear Palin even more to her conservative following. But combined with her failure to name a source of news she turns to, they are also bound to have people buzzing up through Thursday night's vice presidential debate.

Too busy to read all the posts, but did anyone else notice the bit at the beginning where Palin brought her daughter? I bet that pissed Katie off and had not been agreed to by the parties. It was a transparent attempt by SP to hide behind her adorable kid. I think the inclusion of the moment is telegraphing to us that Katie was not delighted afterall.

As an African-American male, I am offended and disturbed by this video. NOT!!

Actually, this is the funniest thing I have seen in my entire life!!!!! ROFLMAO! THIS is who HRC was proud to call her "supporters". Whew! Thanks for the comic relief on an otherwise slow day. OMG...too funny!!!!

Why hasn't Couric pressed her about Global Warming? I mean, if global warming is not man made, then exactly what kind of measures that Pallin think are needed? this is the most important thing!!!! we need to know what's her plan. if it's god's doing, then what do we have to do? pray all day? i know what to do in order to decrease my carbon footprint, but if it doesn't matter, then how do we need to solve this?

Comparing this with the other post here about her debating style you see a very consistent pattern...the nonanswer. Unless it fits straight within a prerehearsed answer she avoids an answer at all.

It is going to be the job of the moderator to ask questions that need specific answers, but whith the limitations of the format it will be hard to pin her down to providing specifics

I love the bit where she's knocking Biden for all that 'Experience' he's got... What a tool.

She must have forgotten who her running mate is. Telling, perhaps. She and her loony religious right supporters definitely regard her as the star of the show and they won't let McCain forget it in the unlikely event he wins. McCain made a pact with these nuts and they now own him.

This is mind-boggling. I love how she twists the question to make it look like Couric is attacking Alaska. We know Alaska's not a foreign country, that's not the point. A week after the convention I told a friend of mine that Sarah Palin would be irrelevant by the end of the month. I was wrong - she is relevant, but for different reasons - she is hurting, not helping, McCain's campaign.

She's relevant because we can see how low we've sunk. The world is laughing at us, not with us.
Can we blame Russia for flexing their muscles???

We're a joke.

Is it too much to ask for our Pres. and V.P. to possess above average intelligence? The election of Obama/Biden will set the bar much much high for the future pres/v.p. At the moment the standard is low (read Bush/Cheney), that's why we have to tolerate Palin.

Was there not something about an October Surprise.

Sarah may not know exactly what she is talking about Thursday night. BUT whatever it is - she will deliver it well.

I think that we have BEEN SET UP to make fun of her.

SHE WILL COME OUT with a PUNCH tomorrow night - AND THE ONES WHO love her HER NOW will love her even more. They won't love her becasue she's all that intelligent, BUT they will continue to love her because she has good one liners.

Funny- because as of NOW - most citizens in Alaska - HATE HER. Go Figure!!!!

CARL ROVE -TACTIC - make 'em think something totally different from WHAT YOU actuall are.

I HOPE I'M WRONG - BUT I DO NOT THINK SO.

BIDEN HAS A VERY TOUGH Job - I hope he does not blow it.

I agree! MUst be because I am a graduate of UCSD! (Class of 1982) -- people who like her now will love her after the debate, because she will be "feisty' -- good gosh -- as if that is what is important. Will anyone in the media point out that she turned the tables on Katie as if Katie attacked Alaska instead of rightly noting that Palin herself said she formed her world view by reading instead of traveling the world????

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:45 AM on 10/01/2008

I agree with you. The GOP plays dirty and they love to have their candidates underestimated. Let's hope the only October surprise this year will be the number of Palin masks trick-or-treaters wear. (Fingers crossed for Thursday night for Joe to hit a home run.)

I would be much more confident if anyone else was going against Palin besides Biden. For such a smart guy, Biden is a gaffe machine. He comes across as over intellectual at times, which is the worst possible thing for him to do. Let her throw up on herself - and Biden should stay calm and NEVER attack her. While Palin is queen of the bad sound byte, Biden needs to learn to condense his senator-speak into sound bytes. I am glad Obama's at the top of the ticket. Biden will be great once we get him in office as a VP, he's a bit of a wildcard on the trail right now.

A doctor struck up a conversation with an old rancher. Eventually the topic got around to Sarah Palin and her bid for vice president. The old rancher said, "Well, ya know, Palin is a 'Post Turtle'". Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a 'post turtle' was. The old rancher said, "When you're driving down a country road you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a 'post turtle".

The old rancher saw the puzzled look on the doctor's face so he continued to explain. "You know she didn't get up there by herself, she doesn't belong up there, and she doesn't know what to do while she's up there, and you just wonder what kind of dummy put her up there to begin with".

Palin also identified herself as a "feminist." That's as credible as if McCain claimed to be a pacifist.

This creepy lady is a true American "Taliban", but unlike her soulmates in Pak and
Afghanistan she doesn't have the excuse of having grown up desperately poor, unable
to get a job or education, and victimized by decades of war.

Taliban were created and built up by Pakistan and Saudi Arabia because it suited
their political and strategic purposes, and (since Bush) it seems the only candidates
the Republican Party has been putting up for high national office are just the same
kind of useful idiots - religious fanatics, socially unassimilated ideologues, political
opportunists, and just plain, well, morons. That's been their base, too, that 28% of
true believers who hand them victory after victory and whose shrillness still keeps
most elected Democrats and Progressives cowering under their beds.

George Will (and probably the whole educated class of Republicans) is finally learning
what Pak and Riyadh learned - that these strange folks will turn on you sooner or later
and you won't have any control over them. The "American Taliban" have truly taken over
their party after starting from a few disorganized tribes during the Reagan years.

This woman is deliberately ignorant and perfectly suited to advance the political and
strategic objectives of whatever part of the Republican leadership (read: big money)
is promoting her. Nixon was right to warn of the danger to the country if "Reagan and
the right-wingers" ever took power. They've got it now, they've had it for years, and look
at the mess we're in.

Excellent post.

Sinclair Lewis of course said "When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross." I'd add that the flag wrapped, cross-carrier will also be wearing high heels and rectangular glasses.

Jasjohn - all good points. It occurs to me that Sarah Pali is the "manchurian candidate", not John McCain. He is the stalking horse. Probably his doctor's know he has terminal metastatic cancer. The neo cons must have made him take Sarah when he dithered over Leiberman and Ridge. Wonder why else he did not pick LIndsay Graham, who is a decent guy and a lawyer.

I agree with fanoftruthiness. I too have a journalism degree. I too can rattle off several news sources most of which i peruse on a daily basis. It is a habit I developed while in journalism school because many teachers would give pop news quizzes regularly to test how up we were on current events. Fanoftruthiness did you have pop news quizzes in college?

As an African American I am very familiar with Palin's "one of my best friends is gay" response to the question. It rings eerily close to the "some of my best friends are black" comment I've often heard from bigots trying to deny being racist. One person even pulled a picture from her wallet to prove it to me. The truth is people who have black friends or gay friends or whatever don't have to announce it or explain it. It is obvious because that friend is as much a part of their life as their other friends. Would Sarah ever feel the need to explain that her straight friends have made a choice to be heterosexual? Of course not.

I thought the same thing when I heard that. The truth is, we all know or have gay friends whether we know it or not - whether we like it or not.
