I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Monday night David Letterman spent a segment remembering actor and fellow racing-enthusiast Paul Newman, "Here is a guy who took care of people... This guy ought to be a saint."

Letterman told how they first bonded. Newman loved to put great engines in cheap cars, and had a Porsche engine in a VW Rabbit. One day Newman called and offered to get Letterman a Volvo wagon with a racing engine inside, and he said yes. The Volvo went 175 mph.

After telling a hilarious story about owning that car and having it basically explode, Letterman aired a video tribute of Newman's appearances on the show set to Rufus Wainwright's version of "Hallelujah."

WATCH (starts a 1:00 in, video tribute 7:30):

Paul Newman was my hero, sure he was drop dead handsome, and as a woman, I loved looking at him, but he was also very very talented, a true artist and left so many movie memories, but he did so much for people in this world, so generous, kind, and classy, imagine starting with his own home made salad dressing and raising millions and millions of dollars for cancer kids AND stayed married to his love, Joanne, for 50 years!!!! Now that is a STAR, it makes some of these so-called trashy, no talent, druggy, slutted, uncommitted so-called stars today look even more shallow----he will be soooooooooooo missed. Rest in Peach dear Paul.

Only David Letterman would think to and then actually strap Paul Newman onto a lawn chair attached to hundreds of helium balloons!!

I'm laughing through my tears!

I saw Paul's version of that Volvo. The sparkle in Newman's eye as he said to my wife from the driver's side window, "Hey honey, wanna horse around?" was priceless.

I like mature David Letterman.....still edgy but compassionate and authentic. Some celebrities and public figures you miss even though they are strangers....Richard Pryor is one for me as is Paul Newman.

Beautiful tribute to a great human being. Paul Newman is an example of how we should all live. Look how much better off so many in this world are because this man lived. Godspeed, Mr. Newman!

I think I've seen this car. I used to live in Westport Conn and saw Paul Newman several times driving around in the Rabbit. Looked like it was ready to fall apart any second.

Absolutely one of the great human beings. His legacy will be one to emulate. Helping those less fortunate.
