Brokaw

Tuesday's New York Times features a profile of Tom Brokaw ahead of the October 7 presidential debate being hosted by the veteran NBC newsman. The Times reveals that Brokaw has "played a pivotal role out of public view, both within NBC and in its dealings with the campaign of John McCain in particular."

Mr. Brokaw said that over the summer he had "advocated" within the executive suite of NBC News to modify the anchor duties of the MSNBC hosts Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews on election night and on nights when there were presidential debates. Their expressions of strong political opinions from the MSNBC anchor desk has run counter to the more traditional role Mr. Brokaw played on "NBC Nightly News" for more than two decades. NBC said earlier this month that the two hosts would mostly relinquish their anchor duties to Mr. Gregory, while being present as analysts.

"Keith is an articulate guy who writes well and doesn't make his arguments in a 'So's your old mother' kind of way," Mr. Brokaw said. "The mistake was to think he could fill both roles. The other mistake was to think he wouldn't be tempted to use the anchor position to engage in commentary. That's who he is."

Brokaw said he has also conducted some "shuttle diplomacy in recent weeks" between NBC and the McCain campaign.

His mission, he said, was to assure the candidate's aides that -- despite some negative on-air commentary by Mr. Olbermann in particular -- Mr. McCain could still get a fair shake from NBC News. Mr. Brokaw said he had been told by a senior McCain aide, whom he did not name, that the campaign had been reluctant to accept an NBC representative as one of the moderators of the three presidential debates -- until his name was invoked.

"One of the things I was told by this person was that they were so irritated, they said, 'If it's an NBC moderator, for any of these debates, we won't go,' " Mr. Brokaw said. "My name came up, and they said, 'Oh, hell, we have to do it, because it's going to be Brokaw.' "

The article led off with the news that NBC is considering an ensemble of hosts for "Meet the Press," led by Chuck Todd:

[The network] is leaning toward an ensemble of hosts that would be led by Chuck Todd, NBC's political director, and include David Gregory, a correspondent and MSNBC anchor, according to a person who had been briefed on the proposal but was not authorized to comment, partly because the plans were not set. Like the turnover of anchors at all three network newscasts, the process of choosing a successor for Mr. Russert has been closely watched in media and political circles.

There is a reason he lost his anchor chair on NBC.

He is boring.

You can put his opposite Charlie Rose. Around 11:00pm, I need something to put me to sleep.

Brokaw must be going broke to be sucking off McCain. Perhaps he lost money when the real estate bubble went bust or with the various bank failures. Like another user said I wonder how much money McCain deposited into Brokaw's offshore bank accounts.

Some people can't handle the truth. If MSNBC ceased to exist, McCain and the conservatives would still be blaming "the media." In fact, they are anyway. Brokaw is a conservative, so from his vantage point any truth favorable to Obama must be a distortion of the truth or an opinion piece. There are lies coming from all sides, of course, and everyone has their own opinion or bias. There are also times when I get angry at the so-called liberal media for joining in giving McCain or Palin a pass and playing softball to prove their objectivity. Then again, maybe not everything I agree with is the truth. But here we have a situation so unbelievably lame and fightening, the campaign of John McCain, his impulsive choice for VP, that to be non-critical would be lying. In other words- reporters, journalists, moderators must do their jobs: to expose the truth. I'm interested in the truth, even when I don't like it. I can Handle the truth. Can NBC?

"Liason" isn't exactly the right term.
Check out Brokaw's "last word" following the debate of the candidate's campaign managers last Sunday.
The operative word is "pimp".

Amen to that, brother! Brokaw showed that he has no trouble making up numbers that contradict the facts to please the republicans. wonder how much McCain deposited into Brokaw's Caiman Islands bank account last month.

Besides, I'd like the wingnuts to show me a single time when Olbermann ble the whistle on them that he wasn't right.

take a look at who David Gregory is married to:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beth_Wilkinson
She was General Counsel and Senior VP to FANNIE MAE up until two weeks ago!

then read the last line of this story to see how much $ she is paid:

WAKE UP FOLKS! this is who Mr. Brokaw thinks is unbiased! unbelieveable!

I wish one of his journalistic colleagues would call NBC on this!

Rumor is Rachel is already lining up to swap time slots with Keith. Her numbers are better even though she's in a weaker time slot, so swapping makes perfect business sense. And Brokaw? NBC needs to keep some adult supervison. Sometimes kids just hate to hear the word "no"

I have seen Tom Delay being interviewed twice in two days by David Gregory. That tells me that if he is back in Washington, there is something crooked going on, even more so than usual.

I don't think there is a "North" on the Republican's moral compass!

If Gwen Ifill from PBS can write a glowing book on my man and then host a fair debate we must allow Limbaugh, Beck or Hanity to do the same. Fair is Fair. LOL. Thank god most of us are all smack and won't show up at the polls no matter how many bumbers stickers we have.

OMG!!!! you used the words Limbaugh, Beck & Hanity in the same paragraph as the word "fair". I feel sick.

Yes, this upsets me also. As I see it, yes, MSNBC is a little left wing as to Chris, and Keith.

But what is wrong with that given Fox, ABC attacks in the Democratic debate, CBS changing McCains wrong answers, and all 3 of the major networks not even commenting on The Congress finding all the things that Bush did wrong and all he lied about in regard to the events leading up to the 9/11 attack. This was a finding from Congress as to what lead to 9/11. Not one network reported the finding which held Bush liable, except NBC in a 15 second note of the finding.

Don't liberals or the left have a right to have someone to listen to? Except for Keith and Chris Mathews, I watch and listen to the BBC and the CBS.

I am willing to sign most anything to protest what is happening at NBC in general and in regards to this news item.

Exactly. And you forgot CNN and how they still support Bush and Cheney at every turn, not to mention Blenn Geck (or whoever) and their recent right wing hirings.

I need MSNBC just to balance out the right wing blather I get flipping channels.

Brokaw's idea of objectivity is not objectivity at all but merely what looks like objectivity, and there's a big difference. His view of telejournalism isn't about showing who doesn't know about supreme court decisions. Rather, is there positive and negative reportage in equal amounts about each political faction? Thus, credence is always given no matter how incredulous one side might be. It's a truly absurd position to put one's self in, but it's where he's always been.
