Tuesday's New York Times features a profile of Tom Brokaw ahead of the October 7 presidential debate being hosted by the veteran NBC newsman. The Times reveals that Brokaw has "played a pivotal role out of public view, both within NBC and in its dealings with the campaign of John McCain in particular."

Mr. Brokaw said that over the summer he had "advocated" within the executive suite of NBC News to modify the anchor duties of the MSNBC hosts Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews on election night and on nights when there were presidential debates. Their expressions of strong political opinions from the MSNBC anchor desk has run counter to the more traditional role Mr. Brokaw played on "NBC Nightly News" for more than two decades. NBC said earlier this month that the two hosts would mostly relinquish their anchor duties to Mr. Gregory, while being present as analysts.

"Keith is an articulate guy who writes well and doesn't make his arguments in a 'So's your old mother' kind of way," Mr. Brokaw said. "The mistake was to think he could fill both roles. The other mistake was to think he wouldn't be tempted to use the anchor position to engage in commentary. That's who he is."

Brokaw said he has also conducted some "shuttle diplomacy in recent weeks" between NBC and the McCain campaign.

His mission, he said, was to assure the candidate's aides that -- despite some negative on-air commentary by Mr. Olbermann in particular -- Mr. McCain could still get a fair shake from NBC News. Mr. Brokaw said he had been told by a senior McCain aide, whom he did not name, that the campaign had been reluctant to accept an NBC representative as one of the moderators of the three presidential debates -- until his name was invoked.

"One of the things I was told by this person was that they were so irritated, they said, 'If it's an NBC moderator, for any of these debates, we won't go,' " Mr. Brokaw said. "My name came up, and they said, 'Oh, hell, we have to do it, because it's going to be Brokaw.' "

The article led off with the news that NBC is considering an ensemble of hosts for "Meet the Press," led by Chuck Todd:

[The network] is leaning toward an ensemble of hosts that would be led by Chuck Todd, NBC's political director, and include David Gregory, a correspondent and MSNBC anchor, according to a person who had been briefed on the proposal but was not authorized to comment, partly because the plans were not set. Like the turnover of anchors at all three network newscasts, the process of choosing a successor for Mr. Russert has been closely watched in media and political circles.

Tim Russert was for the war, his articals in the Legion magazine confirmed this, now with Tom Brokjaw's NBC spittle there won't be a bit of difference. Fainess doctrine may yet come after this election, hopefully.

The network and cable press really need to get a little backbone going. Did NBC really believe that McCain would not have shown up at a debate because of a moderator? McCain is a bully and he played a game of chicken with NBC and won. I am saddened to think that getting big ratings and the advertising income that goes along with it meant more to NBC management than first amendment rights.

Tom's time has come. He should step down and go back to writing his books. He is a poor host for MTP and was really bad last week. I podcast MTP and since Tim passed I haven't listened to one full program for a long time and now find myself usually deleting it .

Tom Brokaw bored me to death in his heyday. At that point the only news i trusted came straight from CBS. Outside of Olberman and Maddow, i have no practical use for any of these NBC Idiots. By letting Brokaw run roughshod over the rest of them NBC is on dangerous ground. BTW my respect for Couric as a reporter is steadily growing.

Tom Brokaw is just jealous of the success Keith, Chris and rachel are having. What he needs to realize is that the WWII generation is dying out and the current generation is more attuned to these other guys. The old Brokaw generation is bgoted, bias, homophobicand right out racist, so I'm not surprised that he is flirting with the McCain camp. Have any of you ever been to one of those VFW meetings or barbecue? You surely don't see anyone of color in those groups. Tom Brokaw needs to go back into retirement. I plan to only view MSNBC when Keith, Chris and rachel are on. I will NOT watch any other program, especially any with Tom and Gregory.

I advocate to send Tom Brokaw back to the retirement home he came from. He is a terrible newsman now, I can't understand half of what he says. He is snarky, and he still thinks the WWII era was the greatest generation, all those racists, homophobes and misogynists, back when the white man was King. He is ruining Meet the Press. I don't even want to talk about David Gregory, he is the Sarah Palin of newsmen.

Mr. Brokaw has already cited month old polling news to falsely bolster John McCain's campaign. How many more biases must he display before he is removed as anchor of a supposedly non-partisan position moderating Presidential debates?

Boycott David Gregory on MSNBC on debate night. Brokaw pushed for Olbermann and Matthews to be removed from election /debate coverage. Brokaw and Gregory are Repub tools!

Fight back!

Absolutely.

Watch the debate on CNN (with the tricky line graph underneath apparently capturing a focus group reactions), then switch back to MSNBC to watch Countdown and The Rachel Maddow Show.
With regards to Meet The Press, tivo it, skip Brokaw and watch the panel, they disregard Brokaw anyway and then add their own value.

I can no longer respect Tom Brokaw and MSNBC should be ashamed of themselves for giving him that much clout. He should be taken off MTP--he has no place taking the seat of Tim Russert.
