Obama

Barack Obama's ad-makers clearly think they've found an aesthetic that suits their candidate. For the third time in as many weeks, the campaign is issuing a television spot that simply features Obama directly addressing viewers on the topic of pocketbook issues.

And now the campaign is doubling down with ads that are getting longer. While last week's economic address from Obama lasted a minute, the ad released Tuesday clocks in at twice the length. With massive public concern coalescing around the current economic crisis, the strategy seems to revolve around projecting both calm and competence -- while hitting familiar campaign riffs about his middle-class tax cut and the the failure of "trickle down" economic policies.

Regarding the latter, Obama declares: "Well now we know the truth. It didn't work. Instead of prosperity trickling down, pain has trickled up."

Titled "Same Path," the ad is set to run in "key states" starting Tuesday.

Full script:

For eight years, we've been told that the way to a stronger economy was to give huge tax breaks to corporations and the wealthiest Americans, and somehow prosperity would trickle down.

Well now we know the truth.

It didn't work.

Story continues below

Instead of prosperity trickling down, pain has trickled up.

Working family incomes have fallen by two thousand dollars a year.

We're losing jobs.

Deficits are exploding.

Our economy's in turmoil.

I know that that we can steer ourselves out of this crisis.

But not by driving down the very same path.

And that's what this election's all about.

On taxes, John McCain and I have very different ideas.

Instead of giving hundreds of billions in new tax breaks to big corporations and oil companies, I'll cut taxes for small and startup businesses that are the backbone of our economy.

Instead of more tax breaks for corporations that outsource American jobs, I'll give them to companies who create jobs here.

Instead of extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest -- I'll focus on you.

My plan offers three times as much tax relief to the middle class as Senator McCain's.

If you make less than a quarter million a year, you won't see your taxes raised one penny under my plan.

And seniors making less than fifty thousand, who are struggling with the rising costs of food and drugs on fixed incomes, won't pay income taxes at all.

The tax code we have today is over 10,000 pages long.

Almost every bit of it was shaped by some lobbyist taking care of some special interest.

Well, it's time we had a President who puts you first.

I hope you'll log on to BarackObama.com and read my full plan.

It will help jump-start our economy, create millions of jobs, and bring back our Main Streets all across America.

The old trickle-down theory has failed us.

We can't afford four more years like the last eight.

I'm Barack Obama, and I approved this message because I know that with a new direction, and new policies focused on jobs and the middle class, we can lift our economy and our country.

Obama create jobs? HA!

With this ad it is clear that he is taking a job away from a scarry/sarcastic voiceover person who would be needed to make a sleazy attack ad! Scarry/sarcastic voiceover guys need work too. And since this ad is two minutes long it is taking up as much as four scarry/sarcastic voiceover sessions!

Barack Obama is a job killer! (said in my very best scarry/sarcastic VO style)

I wouldn't worry too much. The GOP has PLENTY of openings for sarcastic, misleading propaganda spewing voiceover people. It's their speciality!

I really, really like these ads. They are such a strong contrast from the fear smear R ads out there. He talks to the American people like he respects our intelligence and trusts in us to make the best decision based on facts.

O is the way to go!

Couldn't agree more. I hope after he is elected he continues to do this type of thing...kind of like FDR's fireside chats.

Who doesn't like a little "O", huh? :-D

I find it funny that anyone could think that Obama respects the public's intelligence and trusts that the American people can make any decision at all.

Obama is an extreme leftist who might as well be running for the Socialist Party of America.

His viewpoints basically point out that the government should control and regulate everything and that wealth distribution is the way to go.

Why is it that we now find that there is something wrong with being successful?
Why should I or anyone else be punished that some people have horrible spending and/or lending habits?

If you can’t afford to have kids…then don’t have them…if you want nice things…go to school, work hard…earn them.

I can’t stand people looking for handouts! I had my first son when I was 19 and my second at 21, but I worked hard and went to college. I have been raising them on my own for 3 years now and still attend school (almost done) and have always worked and I have NEVER taken on any form of government assistance (even after 2 years without child support from their mother).

Wealth distribution takes away incentive to achieve. Why would you want to earn more money just to see it stripped away?

WORK FOR IT…THAT IS WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT AMERICA!...YOU CAN ACHIEVE SUCCESS!

KEEP AMERICA GREAT…VOTE McCAIN!!!

Remember this election isn't for best motivational speaker...or who is the best snake-oil salesmen, it is for President of the USA

So mister "I'm so independent" are you getting student loans? Big government program!
Do you attend a community college or public university? Taxpayer subsidized education!

Now for a rundown of what conservatives want to control in America. . .
No abortion--arrests of doctors, nurses, patients, and possibly family of patients?
No IUDs, morning after pills, or birth control pills -- hey if life begins at conception, these all work by preventing embryo implantation after fertilization. Also all in-vitro infertility clinics shut down for freezing "babies".
Letters sent to all librarians in the U.S. asking if they would remove books from the shelves if asked by V.P. Palin, the chair of the new committee on censorship.

And for a word on taxing the rich. I am one of the rich that will be subject to higher taxes under Obama's plan and let me tell you, I would be much better off paying a little more every year (funning thing- the more you make and own, the more you get to write off!) than having my stock and real estate holdings drop by six figures thanks to the Republican economy!

I love it! We need more ads like this. Even though things are tight for me and my family, I'm sending $20 to Obama today. The consequences of McCain becoming president will cost me much more than $20 in the long run.

This is brilliant. Please run this ad in all battleground states. Very effective, IMO.

Mary, my husband had a dream too awhile back. I don't know how much I read into it, but I hope you're both psychic, and I'll take every drop of hope I can get.

This was a great ad. He kept mentioning middle class, seniors, tax breaks, jobs here, and did it in a way that hammered home the point in easily digested statements, but in a way that didn't talk down. One of the things I like about him. He explains but assumes we have brains.

For those who have been looking for the defining Obama ads, here they are. These "video chats" (needs a catchier name) underscore that he's a different politician with a new approach. More importantly, the contrast with the erratic and increasingly hysterical McCain could not be more stark.

Great Ad. I think Obama looks Presidential and is finally emoting that message to the people that matter: the voters and their families.

Great ad! Keep it up. It's nice to see Dems playing strong offense and strong defense at the same time. Don't let up. Be relentless!

The apparent quality of this man is the reason that I support, and donate to, his campaign.

(according my children-all in their twenties-the election won't be as close as being reported. They're outside the mainstream polling mechanisms. No one is calling them, yet they, and all of their friends, are voting Obama!)

I am SO glad that he's running this ad because McCain's camp has some really good ads running in Ohio today. It was like a punch in the stomach when I saw his two new ads (filled with fabrications) today. Thanks Barack!

I wish he would make a seperate ad driving home the senor citizens under 50k would have no income taxes under his plan part. I think Obama needs a few more ads targeted to senior citizen demographic.

The 10,000 pages of the tax code fashioned by lobbyist? OMG! Obama/Biden08. Let's kick out the old and scrutinize the new. Hang tough while the corruption implodes in the GOP and Wall street. Grab the White House on November 4 and never forget to pray for our safety and prosperity as a nation.
