Obama

Barack Obama's ad-makers clearly think they've found an aesthetic that suits their candidate. For the third time in as many weeks, the campaign is issuing a television spot that simply features Obama directly addressing viewers on the topic of pocketbook issues.

And now the campaign is doubling down with ads that are getting longer. While last week's economic address from Obama lasted a minute, the ad released Tuesday clocks in at twice the length. With massive public concern coalescing around the current economic crisis, the strategy seems to revolve around projecting both calm and competence -- while hitting familiar campaign riffs about his middle-class tax cut and the the failure of "trickle down" economic policies.

Regarding the latter, Obama declares: "Well now we know the truth. It didn't work. Instead of prosperity trickling down, pain has trickled up."

Titled "Same Path," the ad is set to run in "key states" starting Tuesday.

Full script:

For eight years, we've been told that the way to a stronger economy was to give huge tax breaks to corporations and the wealthiest Americans, and somehow prosperity would trickle down.

Well now we know the truth.

It didn't work.

Story continues below

Instead of prosperity trickling down, pain has trickled up.

Working family incomes have fallen by two thousand dollars a year.

We're losing jobs.

Deficits are exploding.

Our economy's in turmoil.

I know that that we can steer ourselves out of this crisis.

But not by driving down the very same path.

And that's what this election's all about.

On taxes, John McCain and I have very different ideas.

Instead of giving hundreds of billions in new tax breaks to big corporations and oil companies, I'll cut taxes for small and startup businesses that are the backbone of our economy.

Instead of more tax breaks for corporations that outsource American jobs, I'll give them to companies who create jobs here.

Instead of extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest -- I'll focus on you.

My plan offers three times as much tax relief to the middle class as Senator McCain's.

If you make less than a quarter million a year, you won't see your taxes raised one penny under my plan.

And seniors making less than fifty thousand, who are struggling with the rising costs of food and drugs on fixed incomes, won't pay income taxes at all.

The tax code we have today is over 10,000 pages long.

Almost every bit of it was shaped by some lobbyist taking care of some special interest.

Well, it's time we had a President who puts you first.

I hope you'll log on to BarackObama.com and read my full plan.

It will help jump-start our economy, create millions of jobs, and bring back our Main Streets all across America.

The old trickle-down theory has failed us.

We can't afford four more years like the last eight.

I'm Barack Obama, and I approved this message because I know that with a new direction, and new policies focused on jobs and the middle class, we can lift our economy and our country.

Great ad, well done.

I hope they're saving a few mil in the bank for a blitz-ad right around election time, aimed at the base, COMPELLING people to vote with images of the last 8 years.

If Obama can get the Democratic base out, including the youth and the normally disenfranchised, he will win handily. If the base doesn't come out, McCain might steal it, because you know the neocon nutbars will be out in full force.

The over-one-minute-ads are a great strategy showing Obama truly caring for the average American, and having that Presidential temperament to match. It's not painful to watch him; he inspires. It sure creates a contrast to Bush not knowing what he is saying and to John McCain who, let's face it, seems to enjoy losing his cool with his sneers.

The reason why the rest of the world have lost respect of the U.S. is that Bush has projected himself in a very negative way.

I almost cried. It would be a crime not to give this guy a shot.

Great ad Barack. I just voted for you yesterday since Georgia has early voting. I had never been so excited to vote in my life. Let McCain hang himself as he scatters here and there.

TV stations sell time. You can run from 10 seconds to three minutes -- just pay for the time. And since TV stations only make money when they sell time, the longer a spot, the better. they like it. This is briliant advertising, both from a creative content perspective and time-buying. Best of all, MC can't outbuy this kind of spending!

Yep, me too. 2nd time donor and will give again in October for the final push. This is a great showcase of Barack's calm, steady leadership style. Barack is the real deal -- I believe in him and I believe in his belief of all of us as Americans to get back on track. Yes we can and yes we will!

Solid ad, but a bit risky going straight after "trickle down" which has been adopted in mass by the American people. It is very good for him to sit down and talk about his tax proposals, and to leave Bush out of it (moderates are tired of hearing about Bush). Good job Obama, keep 'em coming.

It has been adopted by the American people because it was shoved down our throats. The proof is in the pudding, how many more meltdowns do we need to have before people start to realize that trickle down economics will not work.

Why do so many Americans still love Reagan and his policies? He was a good guy, agreat communicator, but his policies didn't really do much for us. Granted I was14 when he left, but in retrospect, and with all the respect in the world, did he really have good policy?

Scarey thing to me is that they say during his second term his alzheimers symptoms must have been obvious to those in contact with him every day. Same seems to hold true with McCain. Who is really running things when this happens? Since we keep seeing repeats in repub administrations, which among them are the ones really running the show? No wonder Bush doesn't want to take responsibility for anything!

His Grace! impossible! what, dead?
Of old age too, and in his bed! ...
‘Twas time in conscience he should die!
This world he cumber’d long enough;
He burnt his candle to the snuff;
And that’s the reason, some folks think,
He left behind so great a stink.”

f you check on what was left behind him, it was a bigger debt, gifts for special interests, contra, homeless, defense of apartheid in South Africa, his funding of countless right-wing dictatorships, for the great mass of ordinary working people, the death of Ronald Reagan was a non-event...nothing like when JFK or Bobby died...he defunded vital social programs, he put 12000 air traffic controllers out of work, when they went on strike. Why did they go on strike? Was it for more money? No...it was the safety conditions. The length of time they had to work that made them less alert. Reagan was the most hated man in the 80's for the working people...but he had great PR, specially after he died. The Republicans need to have somneone to look up to..and a myth they need to have. Because what do they have left? Hoover. And the Great Depression.

When a man's right, he's right. After the current proof of what a disaster republican philosophy is, I can barely help say anything but:

I smell a landslide coming on.

Me too! Why can't they see, like we do, that this is the man for these times. It is his destiny to lead this country back from the brink of disaster. There is no magic pill, but I'll take him over what we've had. Come on and stop voting for the same thing over and over. Do something different. This is about our country. Real story: I lived in DC for several years in the early 80's. The Greyhound bus would roll past J&L Steel and you could see the smoke. One time I came home on Greyhound and there was no smoke, the steel plant had shut down. I just started crying, because I knew that the city I loved and its people were hurting. It wasn't about black or white for me. They had ALL lost their jobs and they weren't and didn't come back. Twenty years later, the steel plant was developed into retail mainly. Jobs that don't pay nearly as much. Republicans have made a mess of things from domestic to foreign policies, please vote for your country and not for your party. Vote Obama 08! Vote for hope!
