I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Just when you thought the whole "I can see Russia from Alaska" thing couldn't get any funnier...CNN's Gary Tuchman delivers the goods: it turns out that Sarah Palin has never seen Russia from Alaska.

Tuchman went up to the part of Alaska from which you can actually see Russia, a remote island called Little Diomede located just 2.4 miles from its Russian twin, Big Diomede.

It turns out Gary Tuchman's trip to Little Diomede sets him apart from Sarah Palin -- because she's never actually been there, nor has she set eyes on its neighbor in Russia.

Here's the video of Tuchman's report:

Tuchman says that only 150 people live on Little Diomede, and that the town of Diomede has no streets and no cars. The poverty rate is over 40%, there is no television, and the only practical way to reach it is by helicopter. Anchorage (near Palin's hometown) is 550 miles away.

No Alaskan governor has ever visited Little Diomede, though indicted U.S. Senator Ted Stevens has made the trip. The town's residents barely knew who Palin was, and one of them didn't know she was the VP nominee.

It's going to be fun watching McCain-land spin this one, and it's going to be even more fun watching Tina Fey parody it.

Diomede was Achilles' mistress like Helen was to Troy or the Yellow Rose of Texas-Emily D West was to Santa Anna. So, there could be some connection here with the soul mate thing after all. As far as little and big as in the Diomedes, there could be some connection I have not seen yet.

To be fair I don't think that she said she could see it from her home, but that "You can see Russia from parts of Alaska", or words to that effect.

That doesn't give her a pass, she has made plenty of gaffes

In the movie Beetlejuice, Micheal Keaton says he saw the Exorcist ' a 1,000 times and it gets funnier every time I see it '. Isn't that just like the McCain/Palin ticket.

I think I understand Palin's logic. See, you can see Russia from Alaska. Lordy she has much better foreign experience than I thought. For now, she could see Iraq if she was in Iran and could see Mexico if she was in New Mexico, the possibilities are endless.

I saw this early this morning on CNN and was rivited by the story of these people who seem to live in a world unto themselves.

I can't wait until Thursday! There is no way she can cram all the necessary nuances in such a short period time. Cramming works when there is already a some body of knowledge present. She just does not have it. They will reduce everything to safely repeating the few points over and over again. I am sure she will have some cute one liners to throw at Biden. She will adhere to "that's my story and I am sticking to it". Her lack of knowledge will be self-evident to most Americans. Of course, there will be some who will be fooled once again.

Big Diomede is a full day ahead of Little Diomede, courtesy of the International Date Line. So you can stand in the USA and not only look at Russia, but also look into the future. Sort of.

Expect the McSame/Failin' campaign to point out how Palin not only knows all there is to know about Russian affairs because she can "see it from her back yard", she also can SEE INTO THE FUTURE for the exact same reason!

Hey let's be fair!

Did she say "I've seen Russia from here" or did she say "you can see Russia from here." ??

That's a critical distinction.

I'm just saying.

You're right, wyntka. She didn't say she could see Russia from her house. The brilliant Tina Fey (and probably others) have contributed to this. It makes for a really funny line! Not that I really want to defend Sarah Palin but the truth is the truth.

here's the transcript - go to Palin's 6th response

Okay, so she has foreign policy experience because somebody who lives in the state she's the govenor in can see Russia?

Yeah, I'm sure that's what she wanted all of us to hear.

By the way, according to some research from Salon.com the last time Alaska had any sort of discussions with the Russian Government was a mission that occurred in 1997 by the then Democratic Governor, Tony Knowles.

So Palin's comments to Katie Couric regarding ongoing conversations with Russia was a ... ummm... Lie...

It was pathetic enough to claim foreign policy experience on the basis of being able to "see Russia" from Alaska - i.e. from the mainland.

To not actually be able to do that, and to never have put foot on the small island where one can actually do so, now makes it not only pathetic but also bald faced lying.

Yet anothe Palin sniper fire moment!

Palin has a specific task...not fumbling her way through a debate will surely make Americans more impressed with her than ever.

No doubt, but if you can see President Palin, can you see the shadow regent running the country? Who would it be?
