NEW YORK — PBS journalist Gwen Ifill, moderator of the upcoming vice presidential debate, dismissed conservative questions about her impartiality because she is writing a book that includes material on Barack Obama.

Ifill said Wednesday that she hasn't even written her chapter on Obama for the book "The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama," which is to be published by Doubleday on Jan. 20, 2009, the day a new president is inaugurated.

"I've got a pretty long track record covering politics and news, so I'm not particularly worried that one-day blog chatter is going to destroy my reputation," Ifill said. "The proof is in the pudding. They can watch the debate tomorrow night and make their own decisions about whether or not I've done my job."

The day before the Joe Biden-Sarah Palin debate, columnist Michelle Malkin wrote in the New York Post about Ifill's book, saying, "She's so far in the tank for the Democratic presidential candidate, her oxygen delivery line is running out."

John McCain, though, spoke highly of the reporter in an interview with FOX News Channel. "I think Gwen Ifill is a professional and I think she will do a completely objective job because she is a highly respected professional," he said Wednesday.

In its online description of the book, Doubleday says that Ifill "surveys the American political landscape, shedding new light on the impact of Barack Obama's stunning presidential campaign and introducing the emerging young African American politicians forging a bold new path to political power."

Ifill said Obama's story, which she has yet to write, is only a small part of the book, which discusses how politics in the black community have changed since the civil rights era. Among those subjects is Colin Powell, secretary of state in the Bush administration.

The host of PBS' "Washington Week" and senior correspondent on "The NewsHour" said she did not tell the Commission on Presidential Debates about the book. The commission had no immediate comment when contacted by The Associated Press. A spokeswoman for John McCain's campaign did not immediately return phone and e-mail messages.

Ifill's resume includes jobs at The New York Times, the Washington Post and NBC News. She moderated the 2004 vice presidential debate between Dick Cheney and John Edwards.

She said it was the publisher, not herself, who set the Inauguration Day release date. It will be released then whether Obama wins or loses.

Although Malkin raised the topic of Ifill's impartiality the day before the debate, the PBS journalist said that Time magazine noted she was writing a book in August, and that it has been available for pre-sale on Amazon.com. The book also is mentioned in a Sept. 4 interview she gave the Washington Post.

Ifill questions why people assume that her book will be favorable toward Obama.

"Do you think they made the same assumptions about Lou Cannon (who is white) when he wrote his book about Reagan?" said Ifill, who is black. Asked if there were racial motives at play, she said, "I don't know what it is. I find it curious."

McCain and the GOP are losing it. First Gwen Ifill & a book that they have not read. And, now we are being blame for the wall street mess of derivatives and Hedge funds. Like poor minorities were out there flipping houses, buying second homes, vacation homes on $50K a year. Guess who's playing the card now.

McCain/Palin, poor dears, have to find someone/thing to blame. And, they might as well start now.

The poor schlups are up against it, and have no options. Remember, he's announced his success at getting the recent bailout passed...before it failed to pass. Kinda like 'mission accomplished' don't you think?

Pathetic is ugly!

"The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama," Gee, with this title will she benefit financially more if obama win? I'll bet a financial motive is pretty strong to have obama win........

95% of the country has a financial motive for Obama winning. That doesn't include Rupert Murdoch and his toilet, er, newspaper, of course.

Gee, "wdw101," as a self-proclaimed "non-denominational capitalist" who is "OK with waterboarding," I should think that you of all posters here on HuffPo would be perfectly happy with someone trying to cash in on this campaign.

Shocking behavior for a "non-denominational capitalist" who is "OK with waterbaording," taking a swipe at someone just tryin' to make a buck in this world. I mean, you've asserted how happy you've been and how profitable your business has been under the past eight years of the Busheviks, so what's the beef?

Sure, write a book no one is interested in reading. Or, write a book someone was interested in reading yesterday. Books always need a market, and marketing. It is only smart to publish it at the height of the publics interest, whether Sen Obama wins or not.

A lot of people have been talking about the sexism Sarah Palin is facing'. I don't see any discussion about the white racism Gwen Infill is now facing. No body talks about the racism that 's pretty visible in this presidential campaign. Obama does not address it as he wants to be seen as a post-racial candidate. But, this country was built on racism and racism is still pervasive whether Obama is elected or not.

The Infill book is not specifically about Obama it's about black politicians, young black politicians who have risen to power in the post- civil rights era. Quite bluntly, Obama is the most successful black politician to reach policitical gains. So, she can't talk about blacks and politics without talking about his historical political acheivement. Is she an Obama supporter, I don't know. But, all of these moderators, Jim Leherer included have an opinion and supports either McCain or Obama. So, who's to say that Leherer isn't a McCain supporter.

With right wing conservatives---White racism has reared it ugly head again. I'm amazed that people of color are not speaking out about the rampant racism that's exists in this presidential campaign. Some may not want to talk about it publicly because they don't want to upset Obama's chances, but I'm sick of this racist BS, it needs to be addressed.

It does not help race relations by remaining silent. Because it appears that white woman are not being silent on issues of sexism!

This is a very painful period for all of us who had hoped we were better than this. Anger is not an option. Electing the steadiest and obviously most qualified candidate is.

As to your intelligent name calling it fits obama's agenda everyone that does not support your candidate selection, call them a ”racist” or a “bigot” they will back down.

In 1600’s the word that shutdown debate was “you must be a witch”.
In 1700’s the word that shutdown debate was “you must be a loyalist”.
In 1900’s the word that shutdown debate was “you must be a communist”.
Just like if someone says anything negative about Obama, they must be a “racist”.

Just another way to use McCarthyism. Same tactic different word.

If you don't like the question avoid it and call the other names.
The question or statement still exist

This latest "conservative questioning" doesn't help McC/Palin. It adds yet ANOTHER negative element to the already hopelessly off-tracked McC/Palin narrative.

Ifill has shown some very questionable judgement in the past...she bought into the Repub memes about Kerry and Gore...at some points during the 2000 or 2004 elections, Washington Week was unwatchable.

The Republicans are worried Gwen Ifill might be as mean to Sarah Palin as Nancy Pelosi was to GOP congressmen. And then Palin will huff and puff and quit half way through the debate waving a printout of the offensive questions...

So now Malkin has invented the preemptive smear. It's a direct descendant of the preemptive war. It's craven, sneaky, and justifies itself with falsehoods. The logical extension of conservative intellectual perversion.

Incidently "malkin" is a medieval word predominantly used to refer to a demon manifesting in the form of a witch's familiar, usually in the form of a cat. It is not a common surname. I think it is by way of being a pseudonym, as Malkin prides herself on her cattiness.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:19 AM on 10/02/2008

I totally agree. Malkin is nothing but a Fox minionette who can't spell the word, "objective" even if each letter smacked her on her far right winged head. Besides, how could she not notice the lack of minorities at the RNC? Even her own race had no one there except her. I find it incredible that these young women like Malkin and Elizabeth on The View are the most unworldly people who seem to have no way of observing what is truly going on around them. They blindly follow the GOP without questioning any Republican policies and how they affect the rest of the US citizens.
