Dont Vote

NEW YORK - How do you get kids to vote? Just say no.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Halle Berry, Jennifer Aniston, Tobey Maguire, Eva Longoria Parker and other stars are using reverse psychology to get young people into voting booths on election day.

In a new public service announcement that hit YouTube and other online outlets Wednesday, DiCaprio says: "Please -- just don't vote." Others echo his plea: "Don't vote."

But the stars soon twist the message: Voting is a civic duty and the only way to effect change.

"I mean, seriously, ... after this whole video -- if you're not gonna vote, I don't even know what to say. ... You know you have to vote," says DiCaprio, who produced the PSA.

Also appearing: Ellen DeGeneres, Forest Whitaker, Dustin Hoffman, Demi Moore, Sarah Silverman, Jonah Hill, Ashton Kutcher, Courteney Cox, Laura Linney, Natalie Portman, Jamie Foxx, Usher, Kyra Sedgwick and will.i.am.

Finally Hollywood is getting it right when stepping into Politics. Humor works much better for them without taking the Micahael Moore stab at it . I still think 2004 Election was tipped just enough for the Republicans because of Hollywoods constant opinions of Bush. Hey Joe Six Pack sitting at home doesn't want to turn on the TV and have Hollywood dissing the President even if deserved. It's kind of like family. You can complain to friends about your family . But don't you dare talk bad about my family. I have that right you don't.

Is O'reilly a celebrity, Is Hannity? If you saw them on the street would you ask for their autograph. These celebrities in this ad are people, they are american citizens, and they are what a true patriot looks like because obvioulsy they care more about our country than your ticket purchase.

Nothing like Hollywood talking down to us "common folk". How about telling people to educate themselves and make their own decision instead of the blatantly obvious "vote for Obama" message.

The sheep that will heed their plea to "not vote" will be the people who will vote for Obama.

To Hollywood an uninformed vote is a vote for Obama.

Equally condescending. You suppose a vote for McCain is an informed vote? What about all those people who think Obama is a racist muslim? Are they 'Informed?'

Get over yourself...so typically Republican...bitter because you're not one of the "cool" kids.

And, for your information, Hollywood is populated by "common folk" with a certain talent, but still, just regular folk who have the same rights you have...just a better personallity and more money.

As for the "uninformed vote"...that's the Republican garden.

OBAMA/BIDEN '08!!!

I just realized that I like Sarah Silverman more when she's not on stage and trying to be funny. I mean she is off the wall sometimes and I had to shake my head just now, but take the stage away, and she's "much more appealing".

I think her act is very vulgar. But she is appealing in this film, and I loved her stint on Monk.

I agree. Seeing her acting [regardless of her talent level] is far more appealing than her "comedy" routine.

My daughter came home from school and told me her friend had a thing on her cell phone where obama turns into a monkey. That weekend that kid spent the night at my house. I was watching the news and she asked me who I was voting for and I said Obama. She said, really and I said, yes, because he is going to look out for you and her (my daughter) Later that day she said, My mom and dad are voting for obama. I'm not sure if that is true, but my point is, the children are watching and listening. My 10 year old asked me what "pork" was today. I have much hope in our future generation.

someone I work with showed me that same phone viral, and I told him he better get used to the face, because he's gonna be the next president. Obama has shown himself time and again to be above this stuff, and it is inspiring

In a number of countries, voting is compulsory. In Australian, every citizen 18 or older is required to vote. If you do not vote or have a valid reason for failing to vote (illness, etc), you pay a fine of $20. I think participation in Australia runs around 95%.

If Democrats can get a really big turnout, Republicans won't be able to steal three in a row.

Obama is not making the mistake that Kerry made in 2004. Obama is organized in all 50 states (thanks to his tough primary fight). He is a very detailed-oriented guy. He knows this is all about the electoral map. My guess is Obama is pushing for 350+ electoral votes. this will not be a 270 squeaker. He knows he has a lot of prejudices to overcome (and Republican vote counting games).

Obama is focused on registration, early voting, plenty of voting machines (a BIG MISTAKE by Kerry) and turn-out. The pressure will not let up.

Annoying ad. The last thing that'll convince me to vote is rich, condescending, holier-than-thou Hollywood actors.

How old are you? From your nickname, I assume you're not a teenager who loves "X-Men" films...

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:29 PM on 10/01/2008

This ad is condescending in the same way you are. Is X-men loving teenagers who this ad is made for? Don't underestimate us in the younger generation. We are the ones who carried Barack Obama. We do not need these Hollywood actors telling else to vote.
Though some of you do not find this ad condescending, just imagine these guys talking to you.
To put this in perspective, because I can't explain why it's condescending any other way. I with a friend and we were playing some music, and then argued over some of the different types of music. I respected the great blues musicians for influencing people like Eric Clapton and Janis Joplin, but just didn't like their music, or any type of rap. And when I said I didn't like a lot of Regge, my friend said in a voice similar to the people in this ad, "You know, it's OK for you to only like white music." I'm not sure that this got through to you guys, as most anecdotes do. All I can say is I'm not the only one who found this condescending.

By your language, I take it you are the target demographic for this ad. :) Fair enough, but I found it annoying.

And no, I'm not registered to vote. I'm not allowed to vote in this country (but I am allowed to pay taxes like everybody else).
