On Monday, John McCain had a truly combative meeting with the editorial board of the Des Moines Register, discussing heatedly everything from Sarah Palin to health care to the shine of his maverick brand.

McCain got near anger when it was suggested that the Straight Talk Express had taken a detour, challenging the questioner to provide examples. Asked specifically about the kindergarten sex-ed ad, McCain defended it wholeheartedly.

"I have always had 100 percent absolute truth and that's been my life of putting my country first. And I'll match that record against anyone's. And I'm proud of it. And an assertion that I have ever done otherwise I take strong exception n to. And you will have to provide better proof than a bill that Sen. Obama supported that clearly calls for the teaching of sex education of young children."

McCain was equally as animated when asked about the qualifications of his running mate, Sarah Palin. At one point, he seemed to catch himself getting heated and deliberately backed off.

"So, with due respect, I strongly disagree with your premise that she doesn't have experience and knowledge and background," the Arizona Republican said. "And, by the way," McCain said before cutting himself off and saying, "I'll stop there. I fundamentally disagree and I'm proud of her record. But you and I just have a fundamental disagreement and I'm so happy that the American people seem to be siding with me," he said.

McCain dismissed Republicans who questioned Palin's experience as "Georgetown cocktail party" people who call themselves conservatives.

McCain gave another sharp answer when the editorial board noted that -- having served in the military, then in Congress, and now being over the age of 65 -- McCain has always been covered by a taxpayer-financed health care plan.

"I was out of the military for a while before I went to Congress," McCain said. "But that is an interesting statement. And I have never been an astronaut, but I think I know the challenges of space," he said. "And I have never done a lot of things in my life that I think I am familiar with. I have always been a free enterprise person who thinks families make the best choices for themselves.

"I did go a period of time when the health care wasn't very good," he added, in reference to his time as a POW.

The Des Moines Register board leans left, but they endorsed McCain during the Republican primary.

he certainly wears his contempt on his sleeve.

DISILLUSIONAL! REALLY SAD.

Why does McCain want Kindergarten children to be uneducated about what to do if someone inappropriately tries to touch them?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:20 PM on 10/01/2008

He just stubbornly insists that this is something to criticize. I, like James Carville, didn't want to believe that he approved that message; but he insists that he does approve that message.

That's just plain WRONG on so many levels...

Obama should have countered with an ad saying that McCain doesn't want kindergarteners to learn about pedophiles, meanwhile suggesting that he is one. Then Obama can go on some diatribe about how he always tells the 100% truth and anyone can challenge him on that. This guy is more of a joke in every appearance he makes.

Oh yeah, and Palin is qualified. Right.

THANK YOU!
I don't get this either -- it simply doesn't make sense.
What would he prefer -- to LET the pedophiles be able to coerce and cajole their victims WITHOUT them having them have the information to be able to protect themselves? Or AT LEAST know enought to tell a trusted adult so that ADULT could protect them?

She may be their October Surprise. The USA is a pretty sad place when people like Palin are picked to be VP. I suspect some kind of blackmail or c-o-n spiracy by the Christian Right. I think if they win, I will leave the country.

McCain seriously tried to compare Palin's experience as governor at half a term to Ronald Reagan, a movie actor, SAG president and two-term governor of California, and Bill Clinton, a Rhodes Scholar and two-termer from Arkansas...

I don't know which is worse, that he was trying to sell this pack of bilge in the first place, or that he was trying to blow this past a bunch of veteran journalists and editors.

When you start believing your own hype, game over, man.

Do you really think he does believe it?

I don't...i think he is now stuck with this mess-and has to make it look like he's lovin' it. I am sure he curses out his colleagues who foisted this woman on him--and he complains that HE should have been allowed to pick his running mate..!

Now that McCain has said that he has obtained foreign policy advice from Palin...Ifill should ask precisely what she advised McCain that enhanced or differed from McCain's prior positions.

I am a retired RN and former Nursing Instructor, now caring for my husband, a victim of Alzheimer disease. I am very experienced with all phases of developing dementia, and I'm convinced that Sen. McCain is progressing in that direction. This is a serious issue, and I have tried to bring it to the attention of my Representative and Senators, to no avail, since they're all Republicans. I believe that the selection of Palin was not only irresponsible, but indicative of severely poor judgment. McCain is not well enough to be President, and Palin as President too horrifying to contemplate. It is obvious that she is completely unqualified in every way to hold high National office.

there are lot of nurses who think like you and have raised thier concerns. And it is to no avail....who would listen to voice of reasoning when we are being govern by lies, deception and greed. And our voices would be questioned by so many as unpatriotic. ....coz what do we know???

Now..that is a sobering, scary thought...but i also felt that Reagan suffered from it. I truly think that during the Iran-Contra mess, when he said, "i don't recall," i believe it. I believe that big daddy bush kept him out of the loop, and what little info they gave him, he forgot...

I think the truth is unraveling and McCain will lose big. And by big, I only mean 10 to 15 points which is big in this severly partisan country today.

Cindy is always at his side because she knows what happened to his exes when they let him alone. As my momma used to say: "Gal, if he did it to her, he'll do it to you!"

I am sorry to hear about your husband's illness. He is lucky to have you to care for him.
I am beyond angry that McSame has been given a pass when it is obvious to all of us that he is going downhill from dementia. His anger and nastiness really was what exposed it to me.
Ronald and Nancy Reagan hid his disease from the public. That is what is going on now and it's unforgiveable. Our media is ruining our country by not exposing the truth. Only Ed Schultz has broached this subject on his show.
Our country is in the worst possible condition it's been in in a century and this man is not only not capable, but not healthy enough to do the job. Then he puts Caribou Barbie in to take his place if needed?
We are in terrible trouble if Obama does not win. I am really, really frightened.

Contrast this video with even the most hard hitting interviews with Sen. Obama. He takes full control of the conversation without being overbearing. He deflects attacks, maintains his cool, and goes on to explain his point. Now THAT's presidential!

In yet another glaring example of the fact that McCain just doesn't get it ...

RCP - Iowa, Obama by 9.2%, solid rating
Rasmussen - Iowa, Obama by 8%
SurveyUSA - Iowa, Obama by 11%
ARG - Iowa, Obama by 7%
Reasearch 2000 - Iowa, Obama by 14%
Marist - Iowa, Obama by 5%
538.com - Iowa projection, Obama by 12%, safe Democrat

McCain "suspended" his campaign and wanted to cancel the debates to run back to DC to "lead" in a bailout bill. A bill that he could not muster a single vote for out of his own eight AZ Congressmen; the majority of whom are Republicans.

We now see him in Iowa defending Sarah Palin. Why would he take part of a day out of his campaign to fiddle around defending her in a state that he really has no chance to win in; especially after his statement in the debates about how much he's against ethanol subsidies. It's not about down ticket races because Harkin's a lock in the Senate. In the Congressional races, Latham (R) is the one competitive race and he's still considered relatively safe. Again, another strange decision by the McCain camp that makes you say, "What are they thinking about?"

I kind of hope he keeps on doing that until election day - he can live in his own fantasy world, as long as he DOESN'T GET ELECTED!!

He's got a real Napoleon complex right now - watching him, I feel as though he's elected himself KING and just thinks that he can be nasty and defensive and continue to spew lies all day long and noone will call him on it... Get a CLUE, McCain! People are actually recording you and checking your statements with the REAL FACTS!! arrrgghghg....

It is my guess that Sen. McCain would not be aware of any contradiction to his positions. Heck, if all you ever see is the Trinity Broadcasting Network and FOX you could conceivablly think that it was still 1955. Only glossier. Sarah Palin is the darling of the Christian right. We need to examine what that means. Watch TBN - they lobbied HARD to get it as part of your basic cable package even though it violates FCC rules for their station's licences - and discover where Sarah & John get their "facts" from. You'll be surprised to discover that there are millions just waiting for the coming Apocalypse. So why bother taking care of the planet or other human beings. Jesus will save us all. Hallelulah. Good luck, Mel Goetia
