WASHINGTON — Recently trailing or tied, Democrat Barack Obama now leads Republican John McCain in a trio of the most critical, vote-rich states five weeks before the election, according to presidential poll results released Wednesday.

The Democrat's support jumped to 50 percent or above in Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania in Quinnipiac University surveys taken during the weekend _ after the opening presidential debate and during Monday's dramatic stock market plunge as the House rejected a $700 billion financial bailout plan.

Combined, these states offer 68 of the 270 electoral votes needed for victory on Election Day, Nov. 4.

Pollsters attributed Obama's improved standing to the public's general approval of his debate performance, antipathy toward GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and heightened confidence in the Illinois senator's ability to handle the economic crisis.

The fresh polling is the latest troublesome turn for McCain, the Arizona senator who is trying to regain control of the campaign conversation amid increasingly difficult circumstances for Republicans. It comes on the eve of a debate between Palin and her Democratic counterpart, Joe Biden, and as the financial crisis shapes the presidential race in unpredictable ways.

For now and probably for the next month, the race will be entirely about who can best handle an economy in peril.

The war in Iraq, national security and foreign policy issues _ McCain's strengths _ have largely fallen by the wayside as each campaign tries to chart a course to the presidency in extraordinarily choppy economic waters.

The new surveys show Obama leading McCain in Florida 51 percent to 43 percent, in Ohio 50 percent to 42 percent and in Pennsylvania 54 percent to 39 percent.

Story continues below
advertisement

Since 1960, no president has been elected without winning two of those three states.

The results are notable because they show Obama in a strong position in the pair of states that put Bush in the White House in 2000 and kept him there four years later _ Florida and Ohio, with 27 and 20 electoral votes, respectively.

Obama has been struggling to break into a comfortable lead in both states; for weeks he had been mostly about even with McCain in Ohio while lagging for months in Florida, even after being the only candidate on the air and spending some $8 million on advertising.

Pennsylvania, with 21 electoral votes, is a different story.

Obama is trying to hang onto the state Democrat John Kerry won four years ago, though McCain has mounted a stiff challenge as he seeks to benefit from his rival's trouble with working-class voters who question his liberal voting record and, perhaps, his race.

The telephone polls, which were taken before and after last week's McCain-Obama debate, have margins of error ranging from plus or minus 2.8 percentage points to plus or minus 3.4 points.

McCain is in serious trouble! The polls don't lie and i think the race is not as close as these polls are indicating..Now watch the campaign turn nasty as that is all McCain has left to talk about..

No all McCain has left is to tell the American people the truth about Obama. Most of those do not know the truth about Obama and what he is going to do if elected. If you want the truth and want others to know the truth pass it on:

I would say to you that it is completely illogical to follow abortion as the single issue of your concern. If you are so moral, why would you vote for the Bush-McCain war machine and war profiteering? Their complete disregard of DEMOCRATICALLY elected Hamas, and South Ossetia... among others. Open your eyes and see what Obama was saying when he spoke of those who cling to their guns or religion. He was not saying that it is bad to have these beliefs! Obama was saying that it is illogical to cling to a single issue as the sole basis of your vote. Look at the broad picture and realize that absolutism never works. We don't need to say YES or NO on abortion, at what point is abortion no longer allowed, what types of abortion are allowed? To believe that it should be YOUR way and that others should not be able to DO something because it goes against YOUR beliefs destroys the very reason for which this country was formed. So that the religious could escape persecution and now persecution attempts to run rampant. Do you honestly believe McCain cares about abortion? He is to concerned with his failed war in Iraq, believing that his "surge" actually resolved the issue rather than masked it. All I am asking you to do is think about the complexity of the issues that face us and don't parade your moral beliefs like some kind of divine messenger.

Personal civil liberties are the very issues which require less regulation.

Let the government protect my choice and let me meet god on my own and take responsibility for my own actions.

Let my government watch over the economy, foreign relations, etc. Let my government invest in our future stability by forging new foreign relations, by moving to a sustainable renewable fuel source through incentives. Those issues which are important to my ability to live freely and comfortably so that I may make my own moral decisions.

Do not let my government wage war to destroy someones individual ideals without giving them their recognition and trying to work them as a Democratic ideology would imply. The simple message: QUIT IMPOSING YOUR MORALS!

It seems someone didn't get the memo that Obama supporters know exactly where he stands on the abortion issue. He stands with a woman's right to choose. He stands with those who believe the government should have no dominion over women's bodies. It is obvious that you never had any intention of voting for him, but you came to the wrong place if you think you're going to change many minds. I do hope you feel good about your support for McCain/Palin. I hope you rest easy at night thinking about the hundreds of thousands of dead, maimed or orphaned Iraqi children. I hope you can keep your wits about you when they send more of America's young into this war, and into the wars that they have plainly stated that they'll have no qualms about starting in the future. And I certainly hope you are never put into the position of having to console a friend or loved one who is a victim of rape or incest and who faces 9 months of carrying a criminal's seed.

#1 reason McC's support is slipping fast is that he and Palin kept lying about Obama's record, even after they were exposed as "lies". Their credibility diminished among the voters, coupled with McC's bailout fiasco last year. Many of his supporters were embarrassed by his strange behavior. Now no one believes him and Palin.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:39 AM on 10/02/2008

Why should they trust McC & Palin. Under the light of day the REpugthugs have had only a few thing on their minds. Destroying the US financially; Sending as many good paying jobs as the could overseas; Sending the rest of manufacturing plants overseas to sell to us the nik-naks overseas to be bought by us. This is the 2nd time since Regal Ronnie in '82 formed a bailout for unsound banks and S&Ls. Bailing out the car industry in early 80s because Japanese cars were selling hat & fast. A "voluntary" deal was agreed to so that Am.car manuf. could have time to retool car industries for low fuel inventories in the 80s. Japanese home electronics were vilified. I remember some Repugthug congresspeople busting up Japanese home electronics in one of their usual sour show. Sure you can always have the benefit of hindsight 20/20 visions of the past. As usual they had no alternative plan.

But who's counting......

Sounds like Christmas is coming early this year.....Nov. 4. the big election day.

Get ready folks....Can't wait to see who will be disappointed....

All I can say is that it is SHAMEFUL the amount of money that is being spent on these 2 campaigns.
Sure would help a lot of hungry people .
I wonder if all the people digging in their pockets to get (mostly Obama supporters) elected would put
that money in a collection for poor people who are doing without. Somehow I doubt it.

What will that do to poll numbers?

There is much criticism of the electoral college system of electing the President of the United States. I agree with the electorial college system. This nation was created not for majority rule, but to insure a strong minority voice. A popular vote favors large metropolitan areas. Smaller states benefit under the electorial college system. It gives them a voice although their total vote may amount to only about one milion people, while several millions may cast their ballots in a large state. One can be certain if a president were elected by popular vote, when needed programs arose the large cities would be favored. The needs of small states and rural areas would likely be ignored. If there were to be a change in the electoral college, I would rather that the electors be named in how a congressional distirct votes rather than the present statewide total. The would give even more say to smaller segments of voters.

This is a VERY important question! I've been forcing myself to watch Fixed News.... yes, you may feel sorry for me. And when they go to Pennsylvania and say "oh, it's neck and neck" when everyone else says there is a clear Democratic lead... well, I've paid enough attention to the horrors of Black Box Voting to wonder what's going to happen?

We're winning. The American People will elect Barack Obama. And forgive me if I sound like a conspiracy nut job, but I'm seriously concerned about these voting boxes owned by VERY Republican private companies. Am I off base here? There's too much documented evidence on voting fraud. FRAUD.

The Obama camp has to not become overconfident. In the primaries, he pulled ahead of Hillary -- then slacked off and Hillary nearly overcame his lead late in the campaign -- can't let that happen again.

Still, on its face, these three polls are terrific for Obama. If Obama caries one of the three, McCain still has some chance to win; if Obama caries two of them, McCain has very little chance to win; and if Obama carries all three, it's goodnight and goodbye to McCaian -- and Palin can return to her much-deserved obscurity.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:40 PM on 10/01/2008

Actually if he carries one of the three he wins. Because IA, CO, and NM are all looking like Obama wins these states are less important and winning anyone of them puts O over the top.

I think that we will see a "surge" of Obama surrogates out on the campaign trail... which makes it even more important that we contribute whatever we can to his campaign this last little bit of days.

It is amazing to see this perfect campaign bring out the forces now..... it is equally amazing to see how desperate the McCain campaign is. They are bringing out their most despicable ads... I think that they will find that they have given too much too late...

Obama has been vetted in the harshest environment these past two years and he has won... he has never strayed from his vision and his message to America and we see, now, that he has been right all along. I am so proud of America right now.. :) I am happy to see that we are coming back to our roots.... the very foundations that this great nation was founded.

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness......

Long live our great Nation!!!!!

I've thought right along Ohio would be a key state along with Michigan and possibly Florida and Pennsylvannia. We won't know until the nation votes, but I predict that race will be a huge issue that could cloud pre-election polls.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:13 PM on 10/01/2008

Uh, you're new, right?

New to presidential elections and electoral voting?

The story says: "Since 1960, no president has been elected without winning two of those three states."

"Those three states" are Ohio, Florida, and Pennsylvania.

Y'know, key states? Battleground states?

And geez, Florida was instrumental in the 2000 election for its popular vote count and thus for its electoral votes.

The change you're seeing in the polls comes, from what I've been reading, in polling prior to and then following the debate.

In other words, the polls are lagging the changes in voters' opinions.

You can see the actual polling dates if you visit realclearpolitics(dot)com.

The polls are surging in Obama's favor for a number of reasons. First people are starting to pay attention. Second, the mess this economy is in. And third, McCain's stunt the other night and Palins horrible interviews are enough to have people like me finally make a choice. I was undecidied until last week. No longer, I am voting democratic down the ballot. Obama/Biden.

Granted-the polls of 'likely voters' don't mean too much. However, the polls are useful in calculating the electoral map. Electors-remember-that is what it is about. Whether or not you agree or disagree with the electoral college system (I disagree), it is THESE people who are ulitmately responsible for choosing the next president. Anyway-that being said--Obama's campaign has been MASTERFUL, absolutely BRILLIANT at 'playing the map'. LOOK at all the states that McCain NOW has to DEFEND! Florida was a 'sure one' for McCain only a week ago! Michigan looked like it was going to stay 'red'. People were beginning to frown a bit. NOW-there are states that have NEVER been 'blue' before turning SOLID BLUE and states that were either 'sure Reds' or at least 'pink' (for leaning) are SUDDENLY tipping to the Dems!! No wonder McCain is testy! No WONDER he's flailing his arms and jumping up and down a lot more! Obama's strategy is WORKING. McCain's (if he ever had one) is NOT. He has to suspend the campaign every other day just to EVEN TRY to turn the conversation away from Obama and the Economy to himself or the Governor of Alaska! And the 527's on the Republican side are getting WAY MORE DESPERATE in their attacks. So desperate that they are beginning to look REALLY SILLY!
