WASHINGTON — Recently trailing or tied, Democrat Barack Obama now leads Republican John McCain in a trio of the most critical, vote-rich states five weeks before the election, according to presidential poll results released Wednesday.

The Democrat's support jumped to 50 percent or above in Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania in Quinnipiac University surveys taken during the weekend _ after the opening presidential debate and during Monday's dramatic stock market plunge as the House rejected a $700 billion financial bailout plan.

Combined, these states offer 68 of the 270 electoral votes needed for victory on Election Day, Nov. 4.

Pollsters attributed Obama's improved standing to the public's general approval of his debate performance, antipathy toward GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and heightened confidence in the Illinois senator's ability to handle the economic crisis.

The fresh polling is the latest troublesome turn for McCain, the Arizona senator who is trying to regain control of the campaign conversation amid increasingly difficult circumstances for Republicans. It comes on the eve of a debate between Palin and her Democratic counterpart, Joe Biden, and as the financial crisis shapes the presidential race in unpredictable ways.

For now and probably for the next month, the race will be entirely about who can best handle an economy in peril.

The war in Iraq, national security and foreign policy issues _ McCain's strengths _ have largely fallen by the wayside as each campaign tries to chart a course to the presidency in extraordinarily choppy economic waters.

The new surveys show Obama leading McCain in Florida 51 percent to 43 percent, in Ohio 50 percent to 42 percent and in Pennsylvania 54 percent to 39 percent.

Story continues below

Since 1960, no president has been elected without winning two of those three states.

The results are notable because they show Obama in a strong position in the pair of states that put Bush in the White House in 2000 and kept him there four years later _ Florida and Ohio, with 27 and 20 electoral votes, respectively.

Obama has been struggling to break into a comfortable lead in both states; for weeks he had been mostly about even with McCain in Ohio while lagging for months in Florida, even after being the only candidate on the air and spending some $8 million on advertising.

Pennsylvania, with 21 electoral votes, is a different story.

Obama is trying to hang onto the state Democrat John Kerry won four years ago, though McCain has mounted a stiff challenge as he seeks to benefit from his rival's trouble with working-class voters who question his liberal voting record and, perhaps, his race.

The telephone polls, which were taken before and after last week's McCain-Obama debate, have margins of error ranging from plus or minus 2.8 percentage points to plus or minus 3.4 points.

Come to think of it, CHUCK HAGEL may be the MOST IMPORTANT MAN.

I doubt he goes with Mc no matter how much pressure they put on him.

That guy is the key!

If O wins popular vote and I have NO DOUBT that he won't, and neither one of OHIO, VIRGINIA, NORTH CAROLINA or NEVADA came through, then there can be 269-269 TIE.

House is solid Dem?

Would Dems find 51 votes in Senate to put O over the top?

You know Lieberman would go with Mc.

Will LAME DUCK Repubs along with help from Cheney put Popular Vote loser, McP in WH?

Riots would break out.

Getting out the vote is the key. I do hope that the Obama camp has plenty of people watching the polling places. I believe there will be many wrongfully deleted from rolls and unusual contested votes. I've created some levity as political commentary:

We won't. We will need to call, contribute, and canvass. The propoganda against Obama will be fierce. Republicans will try to get new voters expunged, but this time their tactics won't work. People are hurting, and the Republican message seems hollow. No one seems to be "in charge" anymore. That is clear by the failure of the House Republicans to fall in line in response to the call from Paulson, Bush, and McCain.

The proponganda and outright lies are amazing. there are some blogs that are spreading rumor and innuendo. These people do not need facts, they just make up the lies as they go along.

well, let me tell you. I live in rural western ohio....as religious and red as you can get. I've been volunteering for over a month now...making calls, canvasing...and I am very hopeful.
My hope has had low points...as we do have more than our share of racists here
...but after making calls the past 2 nights to UNDECIDED voters, NOt Democrats, mind you, I had MANY MANY obama supporters...lots of women...some that even offered to start volunteering!
There are not nearly as many MCCAIn signs in my GOLF COURSE community, i am shocked! (we were the ONLY ones in our neighborhood that had a KERRY sign...amoungst 20 or so BUSH signs)
I'll take it that the repubs aren't so thrilled with their candidate...noone wants to claim the guy, at least in my neighborhood (average home price over $300,000)
hope this all cheers you on...we r not all rednecks here in the midwest...we r starting to get it!

The formula below shows McCain's chances of winning the election since the beginning of September--using data from intrade.com.

X = 35 (days remaining until election)

y = -0.0587x^2 + 1.9159x + 36.215 (polynomial)
McCain's chances could decline to 31.4 %

y = 46.278e0.0009x (exponential)
McCain's peak would likely not exceed 46.4 %

y = 0.0365x + 46.552 (linear)
McCain's peak would likely not exceed 47.8 %
McCain's chance could also decline to 45.3 %

y = 1.9672 ln(x) + 42.18 (logarithmic)
McCain's chances could peak to 49 .2 %

McCain is not hitting the 50 % margin and is not a good investment at this point.

This is nice news, but the GOP has ways of making votes disappear. None of us should be confident of the outcome.

Hey guys if you didn't contribute a little more to Obama-Biden yesterday, do it today. They need our trickles of money flowing if we expect them to keep the ads flowing and getting the voters out.

Log on and send in fifty bucks every few days or weeks 'til this is behind us. Pass it on.

Thanks, Eileen1 I just sent freedomsdefense a long nasty letter about reporting smears, and propaganda by the neo's like yourself and Palin. I'm more afraid of your party's connections like Rumsfeld shaking hands with Sadam back in the day, or Mc Shame's connections with Fannie Mae and Keating 5.. All the failures that happened on the republican watch such as 2 wars, Katrina devastation, and great evacuation plan insert sarcasm here, how many families drowned and went missing? Failed economy, huge deficit and evaporation of Clinton's surplus, oil prices and dependency, job loss etc.. Crap it rained this morning, I'll blame him for that too!! Lol

Me TOO!! I don't like getting excited because I feel like I jinx it. Just like when Al Gore went against Bush, I thought for sure Gore won and then moments later the news said differently.

Well in actually Gore did really win, but whatever.

It's hard to believe that the polls, at this time in our country, with all of the financial meltdowns, the WARS, gas prices, etc that the polls can be so close. While I CELEBRATE that Obama is leading, why is it so close? Below is part of an email I recently received.

What if Obama had been a member of the Keating Five?

What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became addicted to pain
killers but also acquired them illegally through her charitable organization?

What if the Obamas had an unwed, pregnant teenage daughter?

What if John McCain was a former president of the Harvard Law Review?

What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class?

What if Obama was a divorcee?

What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had a long affair while
he was still married?

What if Obama was the one who had military experience that included
discipline problems and a record of crashing several planes?

What if Obama was the one who was known to display publicly, on many
occasions, a serious anger management problem?

What if Michelle Obama's family had made their money from beer distribution?

Know that my intention is not to be combative, but I find myself pondering if the info we know of each candidate were reversed, if the race for President would be SO close.

Keep HOPE alive

The problem is not republicans not supporting Obama, it not enough democrats supporting him. If Obama was running, with his unchanged bio, as a republican he would be leading by 20 points - they support their candidates. John Kerry had almost the same bio as McCain - divorced, Vietnam vet., senator (20+ years), previliged chilhood, very wealthy second wife etc., but the republicans still didn't like him. It's all about party loyalty.

Fantastic! I've always thought the Quinnipiac polls short change Obama. If that trend is still in action, then he's doing even better than this would indicate. Just hold on 'til November . . . .

I love the direction the polls are moving, but don't forget what happened in 2004. We need to turn out the young and new Democrats!

Letterman did a great piece on Bush and his promises as a candidate. It's enough of a reminder to raise my level of support and action:
