WASHINGTON — Recently trailing or tied, Democrat Barack Obama now leads Republican John McCain in a trio of the most critical, vote-rich states five weeks before the election, according to presidential poll results released Wednesday.

The Democrat's support jumped to 50 percent or above in Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania in Quinnipiac University surveys taken during the weekend _ after the opening presidential debate and during Monday's dramatic stock market plunge as the House rejected a $700 billion financial bailout plan.

Combined, these states offer 68 of the 270 electoral votes needed for victory on Election Day, Nov. 4.

Pollsters attributed Obama's improved standing to the public's general approval of his debate performance, antipathy toward GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and heightened confidence in the Illinois senator's ability to handle the economic crisis.

The fresh polling is the latest troublesome turn for McCain, the Arizona senator who is trying to regain control of the campaign conversation amid increasingly difficult circumstances for Republicans. It comes on the eve of a debate between Palin and her Democratic counterpart, Joe Biden, and as the financial crisis shapes the presidential race in unpredictable ways.

For now and probably for the next month, the race will be entirely about who can best handle an economy in peril.

The war in Iraq, national security and foreign policy issues _ McCain's strengths _ have largely fallen by the wayside as each campaign tries to chart a course to the presidency in extraordinarily choppy economic waters.

The new surveys show Obama leading McCain in Florida 51 percent to 43 percent, in Ohio 50 percent to 42 percent and in Pennsylvania 54 percent to 39 percent.

Story continues below

Since 1960, no president has been elected without winning two of those three states.

The results are notable because they show Obama in a strong position in the pair of states that put Bush in the White House in 2000 and kept him there four years later _ Florida and Ohio, with 27 and 20 electoral votes, respectively.

Obama has been struggling to break into a comfortable lead in both states; for weeks he had been mostly about even with McCain in Ohio while lagging for months in Florida, even after being the only candidate on the air and spending some $8 million on advertising.

Pennsylvania, with 21 electoral votes, is a different story.

Obama is trying to hang onto the state Democrat John Kerry won four years ago, though McCain has mounted a stiff challenge as he seeks to benefit from his rival's trouble with working-class voters who question his liberal voting record and, perhaps, his race.

The telephone polls, which were taken before and after last week's McCain-Obama debate, have margins of error ranging from plus or minus 2.8 percentage points to plus or minus 3.4 points.

What beautiful pictures. I love where Obama is standing alone with the thousands of people behind him. You can see in his face he knows what a monumental task he has undertaken. You can see the humility.

It's really, really, beautiful. And I'm not usually the sentimental time.
Obama was right.
This is our time.
This is our moment.

You can the sincere love between biden and his wife, and O and Michelle have... You can't fake that. Those two precious little girls are lucky to have as role models. Unlike Cindy and grumpy, she seems very emotionally detached, I wish I knew the reason why she took drugs and hid it from Mc Cain? Anyway I'm sure she's a good person, but I feel like there is a lot of pain within that relationship...
Over all great pics at the convention! What a difference in the crowd compared to the RNC. I think heaven looks like the dem convt, different colors, ages, races all in unity that's America..

Finally... I was beginning to think that I was from another planet or something.

I think I speak for a lot of us here that I simply don't want Obama to win... I want a landslide like never before seen. I want REVENGE for the last 8 years.

I would like some accountability for the last eight years, but scarier, I have an urge to humiliate Sarah Palin, or at least see her sprain her ankle or have a booger on her face during a speech. It's just a sick urge I can't get rid of!

If the vote today by the senate , and the vote next few days by the house were successful that would be great , but what worries me is that the econnomic issue may disappear ,and that would give mccain the edge on other issues like national safety and the war.I hope that wouln't be the case. again I hope that Obama woun't play the nice guy anymore , he must attack mccain , and attack him feircely.on his age ,on his medical condition, on his keating 5 scandal .....etc.

At every moment in this campaign Obama has had his eye on the BIG picture.

I'm telling you, the man is brilliant. Obama is timing his punches just right. Can't throw everything out at once, peak to early, and then lose the enthusiasm. (doubt that would happen with his base supporters, but we need to pull in EVERYBODY, not just those who have been on board since the beginning)

Has anyone else heard that the election may be stolen by international hackers? It is so easy to do, as was demonstrated by Bev Harris and Howard Dean in 2004. In 2004 Clinton Curtis testified he threw the votes to Bush, in Ohio, I believe, by request of the RNC. (Type Clinton Curtis in any browser and see video). I'm sure he was paid a lot. And I'm sure he is paying dearly now. Hopefully, to make restitution he will be watching closely to help us get our country back. I just hope there are some hackers out there that can steal it back at first sign. I truly think this is the last chance for America to stop fascism and a nuclear holocaust. Anyone with even a pea size brain should be scared right now. We have to make sure this election is not stolen. Please report any funny business.

Two facts about Florida, that very few seem to take into account (except the Obama campaign):

In 2004, there were 500,000 African Americans in Florida who were registered to vote, but didn't show up to vote.

In 2004, there were 1,000,000 young voters in Florida were were registered to vote, but didn't show up to vote.

All Obama has to do is turn out his base.

I am surprised, particularly, in Pennsylvania. I don't think the polls are depicting the additional numbers of voters who have been added to the polls in many states, as a good many are younger people with just cell phones, and people in all classes who didn't vote before, but feel imperiled by today's events with the United States and their lives circling the drain.

I don't know about other people, but I have received ten calls in the past two weeks from polls, mostly for local, state, and Congressional or Senate races, but one was a lengthy national poll. My husband just says that because I will take the time to answer polls, and don't hang up on them, that they spread my number around.

They are saying that Obama is looking unusually strong in the southern part of your state. They are also saying that Palin is turning off Catholics -- which should play well in South Bend, I assume?

Out of curiosity, what about Palin turns Catholics off, specifically. I would think the abortion thing would have her locked up. (I find her one big turn off, but that's beside the point)

I'm not joking. Senator McCain's campaign responded to the new polls by saying:

McCain pushback on Florida polls: “Our polling shows us up 7. My guess is they over sampled blacks and under sampled Cubans.

McCain pushback on Q-polls: “These polls are laughable. We hope Obama thinks they’re true. The national tracking is clear: Some polls have us down 2 percent, some 4, some as high as 6. How could you have national numbers like that, but have those kinds of numbers in three of the largest, most competitive states in the country? These states are bellwethers because they closely mirror national demographics. Given the volume of campaigning in those states, we expect that they are close to the national track – if not tighter.”

Whatever happened to "Polls don't decide elections. We're taking our case to the voters"?

Senator McCain is attacking the media for questioning Sarah Palin's qualifications to be Vice President. He's attacking Barack Obama for the failure of the House Republicans to pass the rescue bill. Now, he's attacking pollsters.

He definitely feels that he can fabricate any story he wants in a Rovian manner.

"My guess is they over sampled blacks and under sampled Cubans."

Goodness gracious, the man knows how to say things that are offensive. While the above may be true, anybody in their right mind would know that would sound atrocious and would never utter it out loud.

Oh wait, that's right . . . it's McCain we're talkin' about. Nothin' right in that man's head.
