WASHINGTON — Recently trailing or tied, Democrat Barack Obama now leads Republican John McCain in a trio of the most critical, vote-rich states five weeks before the election, according to presidential poll results released Wednesday.

The Democrat's support jumped to 50 percent or above in Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania in Quinnipiac University surveys taken during the weekend _ after the opening presidential debate and during Monday's dramatic stock market plunge as the House rejected a $700 billion financial bailout plan.

Combined, these states offer 68 of the 270 electoral votes needed for victory on Election Day, Nov. 4.

Pollsters attributed Obama's improved standing to the public's general approval of his debate performance, antipathy toward GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and heightened confidence in the Illinois senator's ability to handle the economic crisis.

The fresh polling is the latest troublesome turn for McCain, the Arizona senator who is trying to regain control of the campaign conversation amid increasingly difficult circumstances for Republicans. It comes on the eve of a debate between Palin and her Democratic counterpart, Joe Biden, and as the financial crisis shapes the presidential race in unpredictable ways.

For now and probably for the next month, the race will be entirely about who can best handle an economy in peril.

The war in Iraq, national security and foreign policy issues _ McCain's strengths _ have largely fallen by the wayside as each campaign tries to chart a course to the presidency in extraordinarily choppy economic waters.

The new surveys show Obama leading McCain in Florida 51 percent to 43 percent, in Ohio 50 percent to 42 percent and in Pennsylvania 54 percent to 39 percent.

Story continues below

Since 1960, no president has been elected without winning two of those three states.

The results are notable because they show Obama in a strong position in the pair of states that put Bush in the White House in 2000 and kept him there four years later _ Florida and Ohio, with 27 and 20 electoral votes, respectively.

Obama has been struggling to break into a comfortable lead in both states; for weeks he had been mostly about even with McCain in Ohio while lagging for months in Florida, even after being the only candidate on the air and spending some $8 million on advertising.

Pennsylvania, with 21 electoral votes, is a different story.

Obama is trying to hang onto the state Democrat John Kerry won four years ago, though McCain has mounted a stiff challenge as he seeks to benefit from his rival's trouble with working-class voters who question his liberal voting record and, perhaps, his race.

The telephone polls, which were taken before and after last week's McCain-Obama debate, have margins of error ranging from plus or minus 2.8 percentage points to plus or minus 3.4 points.

I suspect Obama will pull them out when it is strategically a good time. He has planned this campaign like a master.

None of these polls take Obama's ground game into account. His ground operations are unlike anything ever seen in American political history.

The only way to describe it: Shock and Awe - Community organization style.

He isn't just running an enormous national campaign, but he is also running Senate style campaigns in the swing states. He has everything covered. I even heard on the radio this morning, that his campaign is running a shuttle from Ohio State University, to the local polling station, now that early voting has started.

He will end up overperforming his poll numbers.

It goes back to the superb job the Senator's team did in the caucuses, which totally surprised his opponents in the primaries. As someone who has contributed to many presidential campaigns over the years, I am proud to see my hard-earned money being used wisely for once.

I guess all that community organizer experience WAS valuable, after all.

Someone should tell Palin.

Good point..God, if only the elections were tomorrow or next week. Five weeks to go..Pray nothing happens, though on CNN Monday night, I think it was David Gergen who said another 100,000 people would be laid off in the coming weeks? I would hope those unfortunate people will know who to address their anger and resentment towards. I am currently unemployed so I sympathize with them.

I love it. When Obama's campaigners call me we actually have conversations and compare notes who we've talked to and what truly local efforts we've made to get people signed up and to vote early with absentee ballots. It's a great feeling to actually participate in something and not just stick a sign in my yard like all the McCainaanites

He's ran a phenomenal campaign and it will go down like one of the best in history.. A lot of it has to do with all of you great Americans that stood up to corruption of this tired administration.. Thank you all for the donations and interest in this historical campaign...

Okay, did you see the little old lady pull her husbands (I assume) arm down when he raised for McCain and then put up BOTH of hers for Obama.

Hysterical!!

LMAO..i saw that...i think the old man accidentally raised his hand for mccain (old people are like that sometimes) because he raised his hand again for obama (while his lady raised both of hers lol)

the only mccain supporter was the anchorman (look closely and you'll see raised his hand)

These poll numbers are encouraging, but we still have over a month to go. Let's keep canvassing, making phone calls and contributing money to the DNC and the Obama campaign. Let's run through the finish line and help to save our country. We are in a sad state, but it doesn't have to stay this way.

I have a feeling we will go on at least one more wild ride with John McCain the gambler.

So far all his gambles have failed.

It makes me scared of how he would govern the country.

"Pew finds that 51% of Americans now believe that Palin is unqualified, up from 37% after her announcement... The gender gap in Pew's poll is huge -- 17 points among women in Obama's favor, and only four points among men in McCain's... "

LOL.. When I ask my republican friends what they think of Palin? They melt like puddy, and when I ask them why they like her, or what is it about her record, all I hear is crickets...
When I laugh and ask them if they seen the Katie interviews they all say no... Bull

If you care about our veterans and this country of ours...

...Don't vote for John McCain.

McCain voted against our troops MANY times in the senate.

John McCain voted AGAINST 20 million dollars for veteran care facilities.

John McCain voted AGAINST $322 million for safety equipment for our troops in Iraq.

John McCain voted AGAINST $1 billion dollars in new equipment for the National Guard.

John McCain voted AGAINST Jim Webb's G.I. Bill.

John McCain voted AGAINST $430 million for veterans outpatient care.

Barack voted FOR all of these troop support initiatives.

They deserve better than McCain.

We deserve better than McCain.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS AND VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT

I agree with you 100%. If for no other reason, do not vote for McCain because of his failure to support our troops with his votes against increased funding for the VA system, up armoring vehicles in Iraq, and for continuing the misguided war in Iraq.

If you are going to use this reasoning...you should ask the troops and who they want. Don't use the troops as a surrogate for your bias.

I'd like to know exactly what the polls showed 34 days before the 1988 election. Remember, at one point Dukakis was ahead of Bush Sr by 17 points. While a lot has changed in the last 20 years, I'd feel a lot better if I knew that Bush had closed that gap by this time that year so I won't worry so much that we're going to lose our lead.

I tried Googling 1988 Presidential polls but all I got was the final polls - does anyone have access to the daily polling from that year?

Dukakis had a 17% lead just after the Democratic convention in July of 1988. By the time the GOP convention concluded a couple of weeks later, Bush had already regained the lead.
