During the course of the debate, CNN was running a viewer response line for uncommitted voters in Ohio. Overall the numbers reflected a very strong performance for Biden. And while Palin scored well, at times, among this crowd, the dial lines indicated that she remains a controversial figure among females in that state.

Biden repeatedly won high accolades on a wide range of topics. His remarks about the personal trials of having a wife and daughter die in a car accident sent responses from both male and females through the roof. His dig at Dick Cheney -- "the most dangerous Vice President in history" -- and his pledge to end the war in Iraq were similarly popular. When he defended Obama from Palin's attacks, he was held in equally high regard.

Much of the time, dial responses sunk when Palin began speaking. Respondents were generally unenthusiastic when she defended McCain. Her defense of the surge generated what was, at best, a flat response. She did have some high moments -- her final statement, her defense of Israel and her call to explore off shore drilling were all popular positions.

Following the debate, only one member of the focus group said they had decided to support the McCain-Palin ticket based on the debate; a half-dozen or more said they would now back Obama and Biden.

On the other hand, Frank Luntz just quizzed his focus group on FOX (which was, strangely enough, sponsored by Budweiser, owned by Anheuser-Busch, of which Cindy McCain's Hensley company is the third largest distributor). Nearly all of them thought Palin did an excellent job and, perhaps, won the debate. When she talked about responsibility -- both on Wall Street and in Washington - the dial numbers went extremely high. Many respondents, meanwhile, said she came off as a "regular American." However, only three respondents in the group said they had moved towards voting for the McCain-Palin ticket.

CBS Focus Group: Biden Wins Early numbers from a nationally representative poll of 473 uncommitted voters give Biden a significant edge: 46 percent say he won compared to 21 percent for Palin. Thirty-three percent said it was a tie.

More details:

Eighteen percent of previously uncommitted percent say they are now committed to the Obama-Biden ticket. Ten percent say they are now committed to McCain-Palin. Seventy-one percent are still uncommitted.

Both candidates improved their overall image tonight. Fifty-three percent of those surveyed say they now have a better impression of Biden. Five percent say they have a worse opinion of the Delaware senator, while 42 percent say they debate did not change their opinion.

Fifty-five percent say they now have a better opinion of Palin. Fourteen percent say they have a worse opinion, while 30 percent say their opinion hasn't changed.

After the debate, 66 percent see Palin as knowledgeable about important issues - up from 43 percent before the debate. But Biden still has the advantage on this - 98 percent saw him as knowledgeable after the debate. That figure was 79 percent before the debate.

One last thought before I move on to other pursuits.

After the presidential debate, the media called it a draw, the polls said Obama win, and the next day the polls began to swhift Obama's way. Now mccain has given up on Michigan.

I think we need to see what the polls say over the next three days - maybe mccain will give up on Pennsylvania and Ohio, and Florida, and.....

Well, the pollsters have trained the public to be obsessed with the polls like Chuck Todd and the others. Now, if they can only train them to fetch.

The Obama Campaign is playing chess at the master's (2850+) level. McCain, on the other hand is playing checkers.

The strategy going into the debate by Biden was excellent. He knew who and what to focus on.

I was so proud of Joe Biden tonight. Authenticity cannot be faked: Sarah Palin may have crammed for this exam, but Biden has a body of work to substantiate it.

Sarah had to fake her "folksy" words written on her cue cards.
I'm sure she missed a few like "pec**kerhead".

Sarah mynah bird Palin was on full display. If you closed your eyes and just listened you would have been confused because she made no sense. The string of words made up sentences but the sentences didn't hang together into a coherent thought. It was easy to spot all of the memorized sound bites. Almost none of which corresponded to the question. Biden used the art of human speech to convey knowledge, a point of view and a thought process. The "debate" was the airhead vs font of knowledge.

Let's not be too hard on her: "You just learned to add, can you do calculus?" One is taught according to one's fitness to learn.

Great point I cannot stand that nobody asks her that question.

Since the debate is obviously the last time she is going to answer any kind of questions that doing a major disservice to the public.

Good Speaking Skills + Scripted Responses = "She seemed like she really understands whats going on" Like that women said in the video... God have mercy on the womens soul she is so lost. Sara Palin DOES NOT know how to run a country. Not to mention that the General that she said she was so close to... It wasn't even his real name. and her answers lacked depth. She was just trying to avoid major gaffes. The only thing she could talk about was Alaska and Mccain being a maverick. Her views on foreign affairs shows that she's from the isolated state of Alaska. PEOPLE LIKE HER PERSONALITY. BUT THAT"S NOT WHY WE ARE HERE. WE ARE HERE TO FIX A COUNTRY. How can Change come when McCain has voted in favor 90% of the time of Bush's Policies. open your minds.

Don't fault her she was probably thinking of General McClellan from the civil war. Anyone can get the war in Afghanistan the the American Civil War confused. :-)

Then again I bet she knows nothing about the American Civil War either.

I have watched Biden's career for almost 20 years and tonight was the high point. Joe showed a depth of knowledgeable on every issue, but was not too verbose and communicated well with the people impeccably well. Now I can see why 98% of the American people in a poll thought Biden was knowledgeable enough to be VP after the debate. That's incredible in this era of hyper partisanship. Joe stayed on McCain's six like a fighter pilot who had radar lock and Palin was like McCain's wing man who bailed out. Joe showed that he's the real Joe six pack. Joe is the consummate family man and obviously cares about all American families.

I could not be more proud of Obama for having the guts to pick Joe Biden when he could have played the political expediency game like McCain. With Obama to run the executive branch and Biden as his top advisor and to push congress along, for the first time in decades I feel like something can actually be done to turn this country in the right direction.

You said it perfectly.
And Joe is the real "meat and potatoes" guy....Whatta guy!
I'll never forget that "choke up" moment.
Sara was pee'd off because she didn't have any "real human" moments written on her cue cards.

To me that was the high point of the debate. Joe showed he is a passionate family man who really cares about this country's families. For the life of me Palin's response was puzzlingly unemotional. I doubt she even knew what Joe was referring to when he said that because it's all about her.

I do not like being so simple in a reply to a post so very spot on, but you have summed it very well and I think it will leave an impression in the previously undecided.

That is exactly what I thought when Obama picked Joe Biden. Whatever one might think of Biden, it was clear that Obama made his choice on the long term view -- to get a VP to make him a stronger and more effective President. That Biden, more than any of the other possible VP picks, would be the one who would know how to best work with the executive branches of Congress.

Obama was not playing a campaign game, but building a strong team for the Presidency.

"I do respect your years in the United States Senate, but I think Americans are craving something new and different." (Sarah Palin)

From the day McCain s t o l e Obama's message of change, which was about two months ago, I felt that he was betting on one thing to win this election: that Americans do indeed want change, want, as Palin put it last night, 'something new and different', but that they would prefer having it with a w h i t e president rather than a b l a c k one.

Then when he picked Palin, a virtually unknown politician, as his running mate, I knew it for certain.

They have s t o l e n, or tried to s t e a l, Obama's message, language, the virtual heart and soul of his campaign; and I believe he's counting on r@cism, either overt or of the closet type, to seal the deal for him. If he were honest, he would just say at his rallies: "What would you prefer: change with a w h i t e or change with a b l a c k?"

It won't work, we have had enough of t h i e v e s and l i a r s and McCain is both. We want someone honest.

As for Palin, if, after last night, the American people haven't had enough of her, I'll be worried.)

Well said because the American people are not that stu pid. You cannot have the principle candidate for president be in Washington for 26 years and talk about change. It's just to wide a logical disconnect. In fact every time Palin talks about change the more it shows McCain is not about change.

Well, he a "maverick" who's voted lockstep with bush 95% of the time for the last 8 years, He's an "outsider" who's been part of the establishment for 26 years, and "He knows how to win a war", but his only war experience was Vietnam.

So many of thier buzzphrases just make NO sense whatsoever.
