Biden Gets Choked Up Talking About Family (VIDEO)

Biden gets choked up when talking about the struggles of American families and the trials he himself went through when his wife and young daughter were killed in a car accident.

"The notion that somehow because I am a man I don't know how to raise two kids on my own," he says, "I know what its like to raise a child where you are not sure he's going to make it."

At one point he had to hold back tears, take a breath and compose himself.

On the CNN dials of undecided voters in Ohio, both men and women rated the moment as high as possible.

I'd like to know who raised his young sons all those years while he was in the Senate. He has said his first instinct was to not assume the seat he had just won, after his wife was tragically killed. Yet he did, even with his sons in the hospital..­..I can't imagine how Palin would be taken to task for something like this. Obviously the man had a babysitter, nanny, or family member doing the lion's share of child-care, even if he took the train home every night.

The double standard is alive and well.

Joe Biden did a great job. Sarah Parrot is very good when her lines are rehearsed and she doesn't have to think. All we have to do is ask ourselves: do we want an effective communicator, or do we want someone who can memorize one liners and zingers (while winking and smiling cheesily)?

Well if he did, he was much better at sounding natural and conversational that Palin was. She was clearly parroting lines fed to her. Biden doesn't need to do that because he actually has knowledge of the issues at hand. Palin doesn't even read newspapers and she's only been at this for "like, what, five weeks?"

I was so upset the way she just blew Joe's comment about his wife,daughter and two boys. She showed no empathy for him. She just went on touting herself. This just tells me that she has no depth and only cares about herself and how she can advance herself. I only hope people take issue with that.

I noted this as well, but I don't think that she brushed past it for the reasons you mentioned. I think she comes from a very socially conservative culture in which men do not show emotion (except anger of course) and are not expected to do the baby raising. Have you noticed that it is almost always one of her daughters holding their baby and not her husband? I think she just honestly was caught off guard by a man who not only raised his children alone but then actually was on the brink of tears. I don't think she was intentionally being callous, just had absolutely no idea how to handle it.

I come from a very old fashioned Italian family in which things are as I described- the women raise the children exclusively, and the men never ever show any sort of "soft" emotion like sadness. It took a long time and moving out into the wider world for me to realize that this is not necessarily a good thing, and for me to feel comfortable around a man who didn't act exude machismo at all times. So I understand where she's coming from.

I think it was kind of rude for Biden to turn the dialogue into a showcase for himself and his personal tragedy -- a tragedy that took place many years ago. It was off topic, and it was inappropriate. He should have stopped after saying he had been a single dad, for a while, until he found a new wife, Jill. Discussing how one of his boys nearly didn't pull through the accident was beside the point and was a ploy to garner sympathy.
