Harwood: Senior GOP Congressman Says McCain Has "Basically Lost"

John Harwood of the New York Times and CNBC relays some grim news for Republicans tonight on MSNBC:

Look, I talked to a senior Republican member of Congress tonight who says he thinks the election has basically been lost over the last couple of weeks, that Republicans elsewhere in House and Senate races are also dropping, that this is looking to be a very very unfavorable election for them. So Sarah Palin can be part of the solution, if she can turn that around, stop the bleeding, whatever you want to call it, but they're in a very very difficult box right now.

I can see a "senior Republican congressman" feeling like all is lost from HIS perspective. But there are so many racists out there that Obama is going to need every single supporter to vote and for us to get more young people regestered and to the voting booth. We cannot simply cheer him on from the sidelines; we have to take to the field/court/track.

The McCain/Palin hope now is that we all with think the election is over and quit campaigning. Progressives can never stop until Nov. 5 (and maybe after that if they challenge any state elections). Couldn't be more right, The only tactic left to the republicans is to smear as viciously as they can (and with Atwater/Ro­ve/Schmidt they have decades of practice!) They have to force Obama's negatives as high as they can and will accuse him of anything and everything. Most will be by way of push polls and email smears, but they'll certainly get some 527s to blast the airwaves with lies, distortions, and slander. Yesterday, the RNC announced that they raised a record $66m in September, and the new Mason-Dixon poll said Virginia is 48-45 in favor of McCain.

The election is still close. Keep registering new voters and keep giving to Obama.

McCain was forced to pull out of Michigan because he didn't have enough MONEY. We cannot let that happen to Obama.

That way, the Democrats who read the Times and watch MSNBC will let their guard down, stop contributing, and bask in their upcoming victory. Then WHAM!
