Neighbor To Neighbor: How Obama Targets Undecideds Block By Block

Marc Ambinder recently judged the "tech innovation" race between the Obama and McCain campaigns to be roughly equal, crediting each side with two web-savvy innovations.

But Obama's campaign has been adding new tools to its array of online initiatives, giving them confidence that they have the edge in this arena.

The voter registration and information site VoteForChange.com has gotten the most attention so far, as it has drawn over half a million users since its debut in August. (An Obama aide said the goal was to achieve one million new voters through the site by the various state deadlines for registration, which fall next week in most places.)

Less-covered, though, is a web utility that the campaign had dubbed "Neighbor To Neighbor." According to Obama online guru Chris Hughes, the site is not only more user friendly than past volunteer coordination efforts, but also yields more high-value information for the campaign.

"For supporters in battleground states, this is really a huge leap forward. Instead of doing anonymous phonebanking and canvassing as campaigns have done in the past, you can log onto the system and in a matter of seconds have a list of undecided voters on your street, many of whom you probably know, that you can target for the campaign," Hughes told the Huffington Post.

"From our perspective, this is a huge leap forward because all of the information that our supporters collect -- such as, who is a supporter, who isn't a supporter -- then syncs immediately and directly back into the master voter file. That in turn allows our staff to really focus in on the people who we have identified as still being persuadable. ... In the past the way this would have been done is by relying on field organizers to print out walk lists, get in cars and ferry around volunteers all across an unfamiliar area."

Hughes also sketched a scenario in which battleground-state volunteers walking their own neighborhoods the weekend before election day could then feed back their data on the last remaining undecideds in something close to real time. According to Hughes, that info could be re-tabulated within hours. And then volunteers in non-battleground states could receive new phone lists for follow up calls with just the remaining high-target undecideds the Monday before election day.

In that respect, Neighbor To Neighbor is not just for volunteers in swing states. "If you live in a non-battleground state, you can still call into battleground states and talk to undecided voters from anywhere at anytime" by using the site, Hughes added.

VoteForChange.com will also serve a function after registration deadlines pass. "It's going to turn into a polling and early vote locater," Hughes said. "Anyone who heads there will be able to input their address and find out where to go, or how soon they can vote. So we're going to continue to push people directly there."

People, we need to keep giving and campaigning for Obama.

The RNC just reported that they raised a record $66million in September, and a new Mason-Dixon poll in Virginia show McCain slightly ahead 48-45. Things are much closer than some of the polls are showing.

Complacency is the enemy!!!

Wow, this sounds a whole lot like "Organizing my community". Who would have thought a community organizer could do that?

Imagine a President Barack Obama using his skills to improve our country and move into a healthy direction. Imagine his ability to lead our country and the world to begin to address the challenges that face us all... I see openings for new avenues of trust between nations and genuine concern for the challenges that face all people in all countries as well as shoring up and healing things here at home. I am so looking forward to that. We need to work hard but I also think we should start planning some block parties because I can't imagine not rushing out and screaming and jumping for joy when 'we' win this election!

It is gonna be the beginning of a whole new chapter for America in January.

Sadly, much time, energy, and money will be spent fixing the economic dame of the Bush years, but although this may slow things down, it won't stop us from moving forward.

The neighbor to neighbor tool is super easy to use and it really does give you a list of people on your street. When I logged in, I got my roommate. Can't get much closer to home than that.

McCain has nowhere to go now but down. He can run away from President Bush, but he can't run away from the Republican Party. The Republicans will be regarded from now on as "the party that wrecked America." Over the weeks ahead, as carnage in the economy and the financial markets ramps up, it will become increasingly clear. It is important that this meme be spread through the internet. I urge all commentators to adopt and spread the idea that the Republicans are "the party that wrecked America." It will work because it is the truth. Use it freely. Just spread the word.

He just came out with the Obama 08 iphone and itouch app.

it's basically all the tools you need to call, canvass, and get news and info on the go.

the innovative thinking of this campaign is second to none.

WHAT?????? an Obama APP? OH WOW, most definitely, that is GREAT!

brilliant

I have been using my "free' weekend cell phone minutes to call on behalf of Obama campaign since the primaries_we hammered the caucus states with calls like crazy

the free weekend minutes concept came from Obama HQ_and I have have also recruited several others to do it too_using our cells only on weekends to "call out"

it is a brilliant way to communicate to the electorate without costing either the volunteer or the campaign any money_this is technology meeting the 'organizing" concept

we made hundreds of calls into the Houston area to "explain" the caucus process during the Hilary battle_and I have been using my free weekend minutes whenever possible to hit every battleground state possible

let's keep our focus and stay humble_
together we can DO IT!

I am passing this on from another post. It will make you even more proud of this country.

Andrew Sullivan writes and posts this amazing video. Please watch: A pretty amazing speech by the AFL-CIO's Richard Trumka. To see a white union man take on racism this way is very moving.

Something truly profound could be happening in this election. This could be the most important speech of this election year.

Wow! Thanks for posting this link. I can't understand why this hasn't been on the news. Trumka is telling it like it is. I am a native of Western Pennsylvania and my friends there tell me the neighborhood is awash with M/P signs. It's an area where many people are living hand-to-mouth on fixed Social Security incomes and those who have jobs are holding on to them for dear life as they are being shipped overseas. How people can vote against their own economics interests to satisfy their deep need to put down a group of people they think are less than them NEVER ceases to amaze me.

Pass this link along to others, HuffPost readers -- especially all of you who say you get those E-mails from your grandparents telling you O is a M uslim.

This is what he talked about in Audacity of Hope. He was struggling in his first run as a politician, and decided to get in his car and drive to rural areas of Illinois. He put up with a lot of mistrust, but eventually won over enough people, just by talking and listening to them.
