I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Sarah Palin gets wrong both the commanding general in Afghanistan's name and position.

Watch:

The commanding general in Afghanistan didn't merely state that Surge tactics won't work! He also said that tribal involvement in the COIN strategy wouldn't work either! Absolutely right on infrastructure in Afghanistan though! Know what they really need in Afghanistan to enhance security? ROADS.

Palin thinks our commander in Afghanistan is someone named "McClellan." It is, I believe, McKiernan. And Palin is DEAD WRONG. He absolutely said that tribal involvement in Afghanistan COIN strategy would not work.

McKiernan: "I do think there's a role for traditional tribal authorities and tribal structure in Afghanistan, in the rural areas especially, to play in a community-based sense of security, of connection with the government, and of environmental considerations. But I think that has to be led, that tribal engagement, it has to be led by the Afghan government. I specifically tell my chain of command in ISAF [International Security Assistance Force, the name for NATO's mission in Afghanistan] that I don't want the military to be engaging the tribes to do that. It has to be through the Afghan government to do that. But of course, there's danger in that. There's always, "Is this particular tribe, is it being reached out to for all the right reasons?" That has to be watched very closely."

McKiernan: "First of all, please don't think that I'm saying there's no room for tribal engagement in Afghanistan, because I think it's very necessary. But I think it's much more complex environment of tribal linkages, and intertribal complexity than there is in Iraq. It's not as simple as taking the Sunni Awakening and doing the Pashtun Awakening in Afghanistan. It's much more complex than that."

UPDATE: Ilan Goldenberg sums up the foreign policy portion of the debate:

1. Palin mispronounced our commander in Afghanistan, Dave McKiernan's name and also claimed that he supported the idea of using the Iraq surge as a model for Afghanistan even though just yesterday he said he did not.

2. In response to a question on Iran and Pakistan Palin answered by starting to talk about Iraq. Similar to McCain's obsession on Iraq with complete neglect for all other national security priorities.

3. Palin promised that the Middle East peace process would be a top priority for a McCain administration. But McCain's own advisors last week said that it wouldn't.

4. Palin was unable to distinguish any specific difference between Bush and McCain on any foreign policy issues. Joe Biden made that point very clearly.

5. Sarah Palin seems to rely quite heavily on her notes and on a very limited set of talking points. She has been dodging questions all night long.

Agreed, Sarah Palin gets wrong both the commanding general in Afghanistan's name and position....but that's about it. Sitting at a large catered party in Santa Monica, with a superbowl like atmosphere, we all kind of left feeling like New England Patriot fans.

When I think that Ms. Palin might become VP or even PRES of the USA, a line from an old Randy Newman song comes to mind............." let's drop the big one now"

As soon as I heard Palin talk about the "surge" in Afghanistan I knew she was wrong since I just read the article in the Wa. Post this morning and was hoping that Biden got the info too. God bless him, he did and yet Palin's handlers obviously didn't read the Post and she then disagrees with Biden, bad move on her part. All she seemed to say is: noun ,verb, maverick and we all know how noun, verb, 9/11 helped Rudy!!

Different type of "surge", but still a surge.

Palin did get McKiernan's name wrong, and with real confidence too. Aftwerwords, on CNBC when John Harwood was interviewing somebody, some CNBC guy got on and talked about how Biden probably didn't know McKiernan's name because, unlike Palin, Biden passed up opportunities to say it. CNBC can't afford to smarter people?

It's not like Biden not to drop a name, not for show but he just talks fast. I thought it odd he used the man's full title insteadm -- long and convoluted. Could it be he was setting up Palin to see if she knew the name? No way he didn't 'know it! Good move if so....

The expectations and fears about Palin were so low, that just by speaking in whole sentences she exceeded what we expected. However, that does not make her qualified.

By the way, that whole schtick about expanding the powers of the Vice President, like Cheney has been doing, scares the hell out of me. She is right about one thing, they are different than Bush and Cheney - they're worse.

Moose-olini Palin laboured tonight, and brought forth... a flea. And an intellectually and morally bankrupt one at that.

Leland, people like you degraded her so badly, and set the standard so low that by holding her own and winning in many polls, she proved the MSM was setting her up to fail as she alluded. You continually use acdademic phrases like morally, intellectually, bankrupt, but fail to announce even your own candidate Obama, has marginalized 90% of your posts as incorrect. So how Leland do you offer such an arguement with a track record of complete failure? Another example of a post that 90% or more of americans would find dishonest and to use your words, intellectually bankrupt of facts.

Here's my issue.
I can almost live with ignorant. But ignorant and arrogant. THAT'S a dangerous combination.
And that's what Sarah Palin is.

NUCLEAR not NUCULAR. She mispronounced it about 20 times. I thought when she heard Biden and the moderator prounounce it correctly, she'd get it right since she seems to be dropping her g's less.....but she persists in sounding just like W.

That makes me crazy and her parents were school teachers and she's a journalism major. You'd think she'd know how to pronounce nuclear.

That, and the bizarre winks.....and the fact that she thinks the vice president overseas the congress. That's scary.

All in all, she did better than I expected. She didn't embarass herself any more than her previous interviews and she sounded like she knows she's going back to Alaska in a few weeks. Half the time it sounded like she was running for governor of Alaska.

I can't even TRY to say it wrong. I meant to say that they both said "nu-cu-lar" instead of "nu-cle-ar." My point? Yet another example of SP spouting overly-rehearsed GOP BS that she doesn't really understand and can't even pronounce.

You know who could teach her a thing or two about the difficulties of fighting a modern insurgency-suppression war in Afghanistan?

Russia.

Seriously.

Yikes, that whole run when she said "nuclear", what felt like a thousand times, was just PAINFUL. Her voice elicits in me the same irritation as Elizabeth's on The View. Just soooo painful to have to listen to!
