I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Sarah Palin gets wrong both the commanding general in Afghanistan's name and position.

Watch:

The commanding general in Afghanistan didn't merely state that Surge tactics won't work! He also said that tribal involvement in the COIN strategy wouldn't work either! Absolutely right on infrastructure in Afghanistan though! Know what they really need in Afghanistan to enhance security? ROADS.

Palin thinks our commander in Afghanistan is someone named "McClellan." It is, I believe, McKiernan. And Palin is DEAD WRONG. He absolutely said that tribal involvement in Afghanistan COIN strategy would not work.

McKiernan: "I do think there's a role for traditional tribal authorities and tribal structure in Afghanistan, in the rural areas especially, to play in a community-based sense of security, of connection with the government, and of environmental considerations. But I think that has to be led, that tribal engagement, it has to be led by the Afghan government. I specifically tell my chain of command in ISAF [International Security Assistance Force, the name for NATO's mission in Afghanistan] that I don't want the military to be engaging the tribes to do that. It has to be through the Afghan government to do that. But of course, there's danger in that. There's always, "Is this particular tribe, is it being reached out to for all the right reasons?" That has to be watched very closely."

McKiernan: "First of all, please don't think that I'm saying there's no room for tribal engagement in Afghanistan, because I think it's very necessary. But I think it's much more complex environment of tribal linkages, and intertribal complexity than there is in Iraq. It's not as simple as taking the Sunni Awakening and doing the Pashtun Awakening in Afghanistan. It's much more complex than that."

UPDATE: Ilan Goldenberg sums up the foreign policy portion of the debate:

1. Palin mispronounced our commander in Afghanistan, Dave McKiernan's name and also claimed that he supported the idea of using the Iraq surge as a model for Afghanistan even though just yesterday he said he did not.

2. In response to a question on Iran and Pakistan Palin answered by starting to talk about Iraq. Similar to McCain's obsession on Iraq with complete neglect for all other national security priorities.

3. Palin promised that the Middle East peace process would be a top priority for a McCain administration. But McCain's own advisors last week said that it wouldn't.

4. Palin was unable to distinguish any specific difference between Bush and McCain on any foreign policy issues. Joe Biden made that point very clearly.

5. Sarah Palin seems to rely quite heavily on her notes and on a very limited set of talking points. She has been dodging questions all night long.

The Wire. I think it is used to connect to life on Mars, where you and Meah no doubt reside.

I'm with you about that wire. During the debate when the camera moved behind Gov. Palin I was sure I could see a rectangular shaped outline of something under her jacket between her shoulder blades. WTF???

Two more things that made me retch. Winking and trying to have a "there you go again" stinger "Say it ain't so Joe". Please, it sounded way rehearsed and stupid.

I can't help but think that there are thousands of women in this country who would be much better qualified than Palin at both President and Governor.

First of all, I believe the republicans tried to set up Americans by releasing those videos from Katrie Courie showing Palin as being a complete "dummy". They did that on purpose to make us feel she would be more dumb than she really is. Think about it, why would McCain allow CBS to release all those tapes if he knew it was really hurting him? All of you can answer that question -- he wouldn't! So that tells you right away that those videos were a setup for tonight.

But, Palin has lost the campaign for McCain because she has allowed the public to see her real self and that self is as e.v.i.l as McCain is. There is no difference between them. They love to attack, tell lies, and be mean. Neither one can say anything nice about their opponents ever. Now what does that tell you?

It tells you that you have two people who have no LOVE between them to share with others. They are selfish, cold, rude, disrespectful, liars, con artists, and outright bullsh__ters. Why would Americans want them to lead us?

That is the question we all need to answer!

You are kidding, right? Those edited video cut outs that everyone here had a field day cutting her apart on? Those? You people set the bar so low in anticipation of her failure that you blew it. She did fair, and it looks great to all of those that you cut her up to. And as to lies, it appears Biden had his share. The media will have fun with that tomorrow.

Here, after you read Fox's "faux check", read this from the New York Times:

Gwen Ifill was absolutely useless as moderator. Katie Couric has been the best at making Palin TRY to answer questions.

Maybe Couric should have writtena pro Obama book instead of Ifill.

If I were Sarah Palin, and Joe Biden told me three times that the commander said that, I would have had the sense to shut up. But I guess the whole problem with her is that she does not know how much she doesn't know. I loved her line at some point about the pundits fact-checking this later. You bet your ass they will! And they will find Sarah Palin plenty wrong about a lot.

And it appears Biden will have his share to answer to. And you are right, it will be interesting to see.

Senator Biden found his "inner Couric" and remained totally nonplussed by her misstatements. Bravo, Joe!

Except for one brief snort during one of her answers, you are right , he was very respectful of her. If you read the CNNInternational transcript of the debate, you'll see that when he originally refers to "the top commander in Afghanistan" with no name and she starts talking about Gen. "McClellan", when the question comes back to him, he does not correct her. He just continues to refer to "the top commander in Afghanistan". I think that was a smart move.

Gen. David McKiernan is the top NATO commander in Afghanistan. Gen. McKiernan said last August a surge in troops may not work in Afghanistan. McKiernan said, "What we need is security of the people. We need governance. We need reconstruction and development."

Gen. George B. McClellan served briefly (Nov. 1861 to March 1862) as general-in-chief of the Union Army during the American Civil War. His opinion on the result of the surge in Iraq is not known.

Mozart123: Yes!! That's who popped in my head immediately when I heard Palin refer to the General, as McClellan - Though I couldn't recollect the current General myself, I knew McClellan was wrong, and then thought, there's no way she could know about civil war facts- except through osmosis over time - what a weird debate - I found her tremendously beauty pagent put-on - blech..........

We were all expecting some bumbling fool, because the MSM set the bar so low for her. She didn't do that bad. It was an actual debate - not a train wreck. While anyone would be a vast improvement over Cheney, I still prefer Biden. She did OK. He nailed it.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:16 PM on 10/02/2008

I disagree. I think she did horribly. While, Biden showed an extreme depth of knowledge, and generally answered the questions, she didn't answer a single one, and her responses were incoherent. Also, the idea that people should vote for them just because they're a "pair of Mavericks" is ludicrous in the extreme.

ALSO, how come nobody else caught that she thinks the Taliban are in Iraq?!

Lastly, if she says Nu-Ku-ler one more time, I'm going to FedEx her a box of poo, and not good poo either, stinky, nasty stuff.

Agree that Biden did a much better job. Not only did I learn about his positions on issues but also a few new things about government and politics. However, Palin reminds me of the presidential debate Bush performed: half knowledge, I-don't-have-to-know attitude, chatting room language...Maybe good enough for Saturday Night show, not serious political debate on issues. I can almost see in her a Bush in lipsticks!
