Palin

A familiar debate emerges over what is effective diplomacy. Palin claims Obama wants to meet with the world's worst dictators without preconditions. Reminded that Henry Kissinger argued that same position, she posits:

"Dr. Henry Kissinger, especially, and I had a good conversation with him... and he shared with me his passion for diplomacy." How could we sit down, she asks, with those who "hate America and hate with we stand for with our freedoms... those who want to destroy what we stand for cannot be met with discussions on a presidential level."

Biden, like Obama before him, was ready for the response. McCain and Plain talk about a passion for diplomacy, and we have to bring our friends and allies along," he says. "Our friends and allies [are the ones who] have been saying sit down, and talk, talk, talk."

Now we know why George W. Bush was not visible at the Republican Convention. He was disquised as Sarah Palin.

Palin: "those who "hate America and hate what we stand for with our freedoms... "

=====

This is Bush-talk and it makes me want to hit somebody. The reason America is hated by some is indeed what we stand for -- but it isn't because of our freedoms. For a number of years, what America has stood for is imperialistic aggression, bullyism, and greed, and it got worse by several magnitudes under the Bush administration.

Sarah Palin, stuff it, and shut up. You're nothing but a schill for Bush and McCain.

What McCain, the GOP and the Christian Right did by picking Palin as the Veep is show each and every American exactlly what they think of our intelligence. They decided that we the people must be nincompoops who will accept anything and anyone if they smile and wink at us on TV. McCain and his supporters had one chance to convince America that they are responsible stewards of our Constitution and that no matter how partisan they seem at the end of the day they will put America first. There is no doubting that this is a blatant lie and that in fact Repubicans continuously put themselves and their special interests in front of each citizen and our country.

Senator Obama has said that In the spirit of bold leadership, he would be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of his administration, in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea, in order to bridge the gap that divides our countries.

An example of a "precondition" for a meeting with the leaders of Iran might be the verified suspension of that country's uranium enrichment program. Senator Obama has indicated that he would not impose such a precondition.

The negotiation of such things as location, subject matter, attendance, timing, security and publicity are matters of preparation -- not precondition.

Governor Palin was mendacious from "hello."

She walked on the stage, with her mike on, and asked Senator Biden "Hey, can I call you Joe?" But this seemingly polite and friendly question was nothing of the sort. It was, rather, the deceptive setup for a lame and misplaced sound bite that she finally deployed near the end of the debate:

"Say it ain't so, Joe ...."

The transcript shows that this was the only time in the entire debate she called Senator Biden "Joe." http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/president/debates/transcripts/vice-presidential-debate.html

So the second sentence Governor Palin uttered to Senator Biden -- and the American people -- was a deception. Her request to call the Senator "Joe" represented to him and to us that she was proceeding with warmth and respect. But in fact it was a trick. She couldn't even introduce herself to Senator Biden without uttering a lie.

We have had liars in the White House for eight years. Their lies have grievously injured our country. No more.

Kissinger is a war criminal. He can't travel outside the country. I suppose McCain and Palin think that's a good person to be mentored by.

I don't think I could live through another 4 or 8 years of having a President whose visage and voice/speaking ability are so grating and unacceptable.

Pointing, winking, talking down, using "code" (that is a Christian Right thing gone completely wrong!)

If there is a God, please spare us (U.S.)

If I have a disagreement with someone and then take the stand that I will not talk to them until they agree with me 100%...

Not quite.
First u have to agree to a set of conditions.
Time will pass b4 u find points of agreement to agree to.
More time will pass with different levels of personnel agreeing to the agreements, that can be
pre-set for the agreement terms.
Once established and agreed to.
Then a meet will be scheduled and mutually agreed upon.
Now the two parties can meet in person.
Discuss the agreed upon issues.
Perhaps even disagree.
Part company, to consider the issues, agreed and disagreed with.
Eventually, the Secretary's of State will set a meet with the President, to discuss the agreeds.
POTUS will consider whether they will agree to meet with their counterpart.
With no guarantee of agreement.

What is Obama thinking?

I think Obama's willingness to do whatever means the most to the success of the United States should be applauded. I trust his judgement. Nothing should be taken off the table, including meeting with the leaders of countries without preconditions, if that is the way to better serve the U.S.

Enough of the inane posturing already, the only way to resolve disputes is to sit down and talk!

I see on point holding discussions at low level when the guy at the top makes the decisions!

Does anyone remember when Reagan met with Gorbechev and the result of those discussions?

Sure. But Reagan met with Gorby about years of preparation by lower level diplomats, multiple layers of preconditions, and after the establishment of glasnost and perestroika.

Do you see the difference?

Enough of the spin. Kissinger said discussions should occur at the secretary of state level, a comment with which McCain agreed. Kissenger said discussions should NOT occur at the presidential level, and McCain has tried to pin Obama as having said he would meet face to face with the leadership of Iran.

I'm not a McCain supporter. But, if you're being completely honest with yourself, McCain is closer to the truth on this than the Obama camp. Someone needs to start a blog that presents purely the facts with links to the spin by the left and the right for those who want to read it. I'd rather know the truth; NOT the truth as seen by Obama or McCain.

Kissinger said high level talks should begin without preconditions. That is the fundamental difference.

McCain wants the other side to give in to all demands before going to the table. Who's being naive?

"High-level talks" do not mean a guaranteed face-to-face sitdown between the President of the United States and a list of global nutbags.
