ST. LOUIS — Under intense scrutiny, Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin stood her ground Thursday night against a vastly more experienced Joe Biden, debating the economy, energy and global warming, then challenging him on Iraq, "especially with your son in the National Guard."

The Alaska governor also noted that Biden had once said Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama wasn't ready to be commander in chief, "and I know again that you opposed the move that he made to try to cut off funding for the troops and I respect you for that."

Biden responded that John McCain, too, had voted against funding, and said the Republican presidential candidate had been "dead wrong on the fundamental issues relating to the conduct of the war."

The clash over Iraq was the most personal, and pointed, of the only vice presidential debate of the campaign, one in which Palin repeatedly cast herself as a non-Washington politician and part of a "team of mavericks" ready to bring change to a country demanding it.

"Maverick he is not on the important, critical issues," Biden shot back, referring to McCain. And he said Obama was the true candidate of change.

Palin, governor of her state for less than two years, faced enormous challenges as she walked onto the debate stage at Washington University. After five weeks as McCain's ticket-mate, her poll ratings have begun dropping as even some conservatives question her readiness for high public office.

Her solo campaign events are few, and she has drawn ridicule for some of her answers in the few interviews she has granted _ including her claim that Alaska's proximity to Russia gives her an insight into foreign policy.

From the opening moments of the debate, Democrat Biden sought to make McCain out as a straight-ahead successor to an unpopular President Bush. "He voted four out of five times for George Bush's budget, which put us a half-trillion dollars in debt and over $4 trillion in debt since he got here," Biden said of McCain.

Story continues below

In return, Palin accused Biden of reciting the past rather than looking to the future. "Americans are cravin' that straight talk" that McCain offers, she said midway in the 90-minute debate.

With one month until the election, polls show Obama with a small but perceptible lead, and Republican officials said earlier in the day that McCain had decided to pull out of Michigan, conceding the state to the Democrats. At the same time, his own aides said the campaign may soon begin to advertise in Indiana _ a state that has voted Republican in every presidential election since 1968.

After intense preparation _ including two days at McCain's home in Sedona, Ariz., Palin made only one obvious stumble, when she twice referred to the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan as "Gen. McClellan." His name is David McKiernan.

As is her custom on the campaign trail, she spoke in familiar terms, saying "betcha" rather than "bet you" and "gonna" rather than "going to."

She also spoke to the home folks. "Here's a shout-out" to third graders at Gladys Wood Elementary School in Alaska. She said they would all receive extra credit for watching the debate.

"Can I call you Joe?" she asked Biden as they shook hands before taking their places behind identical lecterns.

He readily agreed she could _ and she used it to effect more than an hour later. "Say it ain't so, Joe," she said as she smilingly criticized him at one point for focusing his comments on the Bush administration rather than McCain.

Biden's burden was not nearly as fundamental as hers. Although he has long had a reputation for long-windedness, he is a veteran of more than 35 years in the Senate, with a strong knowledge of foreign policy as well as domestic issues.

For much of the evening, the debate unfolded in traditional vice presidential fashion _ the running mates praising their own presidential candidate and denigrating the other.

Palin said Obama had voted to raise taxes 94 times _ an allegation that Biden disputed and then countered. By the same reckoning, he said, McCain voted "477 times to raise taxes."

They clashed over energy policy, as well, when Palin said Obama's vote for a Bush administration-backed bill granted breaks to the oil industry. By contrast, she said that as governor, she had stood up to the same industry, and noted that McCain had voted against the bill Obama supported.

Biden said that in the past decade, McCain had voted "20 times against funding alternative energy sources and thinks, I guess, the only answer is drill, drill, drill."

"The chant is, `drill, baby drill," Palin countered quickly, unwilling to yield to Biden on that issue _ or any other.

On the environment, Palin declined to attribute the cause of climate change to man-made activities alone. "There is something to be said also for man's activities, but also for the cyclical temperature changes on our planet," she said, adding that she didn't want to argue about the causes.

Biden said the cause was clearly man-made, and added, "If you don't understand what the cause is, it's virtually impossible to come up with a solution."

Tonights debate is being billed as Image (Palin) over Substance (Biden).

Fake experience (Palin) over real experience (Biden.)

I have my money on substance. We can get all the image and fakery we want from movies.

We want the real deal.

The GOP has gotten to the point of not wanting to be asked anything. They want America to just vote them into office without asking questions. They feel entitled to that position because .........

They are sadly mistaken. And we, the people, will let them know just HOW MISTAKEN they truly are.

You hit it right on the head. They republicans demand faith instead of answering questions.

Who ever heard of such a stoopid approach to running this country?

This has got to stop.

America is better than the irresponsible, unaccountable republican lia.rs club.

Voters doubt her readiness? Is this country that stupid? I am 100% sure she is unqualified to be VP.

I don't even know where to begin, but obviously HuffPo, Olbermann, and my site has tons of stuff of reasons why Sarah Palin shouldn't be mayor of Wasilla, much less VP candidate: http://cnbcsucks.wordpress.com/

By the way, I am starting to take a liking to Maria Cantwell, possible successor to Barack in 2016!

Someone earlier posted that the Repubs have become whiny crybabies, I totally agree. What's with the complaining about "gotcha journalism"? How are the questions she's been asked gotcha at all? What newspapers has she read (all of 'em - apparently she's a Great Reader like the Current Occupant), what's her opinion of the Bush Doctrine (what aspect, Charlie?), what Supreme Court decisions she's disagreed with....I mean, come on, if you're planning to become VP of the US a little knowledge of these things might come in handy, you betcha. Oh, and her answer as to why she just got a passport a year ago (I mean if you can see Russia from your house, dontcha think you should go visit?) was that she wasn't one of those people who were given a plane ticket and a backpack after college. How blatantly snobby is that? Clearly, anyone who's been overseas is elitist (and perhaps a little openminded.....)

If she has any trouble answering questions tonight, the blame will fall on the "liberal media" and the moderator. What a bunch of crap. I'm so sick of it, but the Repubs just defend and defend Palin.

GO-BAMA!!

They have to talk about anything other that real issues so they appeal everything as if they got the short end of the stick. But, like the old tale tells, you can't cry wolf to many times or people simply ingore you. That is the condition the McCain camp now finds it self in. Too many li.es, to may fingers of blame, too many excuses and way to many tears.

They are running out of sympathy.

The GOP's big problem is not that Sarah Palin doesn't know the issues but that she is incapable of sustained rational thought. Pouring talking points into a brain that doesn't work very well results in the kind of garbled answers Palin gives when asked to reveal what she thinks about something. It's talking points fed through a food chopper.

McCain made a dreadful mistake in picking Palin as a running mate. The only possible outcomes of tonight's debate are:

1. Palin makes an embarassing hash of it.
2. Palin muddles through without making a major gaffe.

Neither outcome is going to be a particular plus for the GOP. What's the most they will be able to brag about, that Palin DIDN'T make the kind of mess everyone was afraid of? Not much in the way of material to fashion spin from.

While I hesitate to feel overconfident, the Democrats have very little to lose tonight. Joe Biden is smart enough to play things cool and give Palin plenty of opportunity (and room) to destroy herself.

Great post. People are fond of saying Joe Biden talks to much, but he may just allow Sarah to ramble on and at the end of the debate, everyone watching will know just how unqualified Palin is.

I have followed Joe Biden's career for a long time. He may make gaffs here and there, but he's also never lost an election in 36 years as a Senator. Joe doesn't go anywhere unprepared.

I think Palin doesn't know that in the Senate, people debate everyday. Joe has spent 36 years debating some of the finest minds that have occupied Senate seats. He's crafted ground breaking legislation and debated it into law.

If America wants a person who can step right into the oval office and go to work on any given day, Biden is the man. Palin is really not a legitimate option.

I think Palin will "perform" very well in the debate. She's been studying and studying and studying for lo! amny days now. ReThugs keep saying that Palin's a quick study; she learns fast. I suspect that Palin will "do" well in Thursday night's (tonight's)debate. What will that mean? It will mean Palin is indeed "a quick study" & "learns fast". She's an actress. So someone else is teaching Palin; she's not a leader. We already know she is a Know-Nothing and being a Know-Nothing tells us that Palin is NOT INTERESTED in national and foreign affairs.
Is it not SCARY that Palin is being told what to say? She wouldn't know what to say if someone else didn't tell her what to say. Scary! And dangerous!
Palin's "performance" at the debate will tell us nothing. We already know about her and what she lacks - interest and knowledge.
My question for Ifill to ask Palin: Who were your coaches? And can we hear the teaching, prompting, coaching tapes? We want to hear! We want to shudder!

Here's another passing thought. Even IF (and I can't make that IF big enough) Palin was everything McCain and the GOP tried to claim she was and more. All that would mean is McCain is going to drag her down with him. I still think selecting Palin was the biggest mistake in modern political history. But that is not what is causing McCain's gradual slide to the abyss in the polls. That is just McCain, his ideas, his performance and the gradual realization on the part of the American public that we really do need a change.

"Maybe he picked her so he could blame his defeat on someone other than himself."

That premis is certainly in the realm of possibilities.
I think John has known for a long time his only chance of winning is his old ally the American press.

But, he went to war with them, so he had to have a saftey valve.

Alright now let's just hold it here for a minute folks and think about this. I could be wrong and counter opinions are welcome, but I have not seen one trace of Sara Palin being able to think on her feet, that is going to be an important part of this debate because there is no way her GOP handlers can accurately predict Joe Biden's responses. Now Biden has shown me he can think on his feet. He can respond with not just knowledge but with understanding. Those are two different things. They can coach Palin on facts, voting records and issues, but that does not mean she has a working understanding of them and can synthesize new information into what she has tried to memorize.

Also so much is being played up about her debate in Alaska. With what the most unpopular governor in Alaska History and a wanna be opponent both of which I would bet concentrated on each other and were surprised by Palin. Neither of those guys is Joe Biden and obviously neither Biden or anyone else is taking her for granted. If anything the real danger is going overboard about it.

I'm just not seeing all this need for concern

UncleHomer
you have a valid point. I respect your thoughts.
I think Palin has been acting out this media I am ditsy woman with this low budget very cheap joe six pack accent. yup yup tone good enough for SNL entertainment every week since August.

A good hard look at those debates in Alaska, she did not use the joe six pack tone or language.

Hearing her or Tina on SNL and hearing her tonight will be more in line with her tone to Joe Biden from the convention in the twin city.

it is perfect timing because Americans are very angry. They want her to kick butt with Joe. she has been taking cheap shot about how many years she has been listening to him. (she said since 1972 see huffpost) However, C-span airing the senate started in 1982. But people believe her.
They will check the facts. She can lie as much as she wants to. It is her tone saying I can kick you butt Joe Biden and you can not hit me back.

UncleHomer, i must agree with your synopsis. People are making a big deal if Biden is going to be able to keep his cool and all of that. Palin by far has the hardest job to do tonight, can she think on her feet with all of the information that she has been cramming with? Does she have not only an understanding, but a COMMAND of the issues? She is fighting not only for herself but against the image of Bush, a fairly stupid individual that became President, and look at what idiocy, stupidity and lack of command of the issues has brought us to.

No, Palin has a pretty tough job tonight, a job that she made tougher by her own hand!

Sara is prepared? She's been tutored by the Good Old Politicians ( GOP ) all week and they have, without a doubt, given her instructions on what and what not to say. Too bad they can't feed her lines via a headset or teleprompter tonight. Odds are that she can't hide , no matter how hard she crammed for the test. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck it's probably a duck.
To Sara we say " Thanks but No Thanks " !
She will be just fine back home in Alaska. It must be nice to have all that paid time off.

I agree with every thing you've said her except the last line. When McCain/Palin go down in flames my guess is her political career is as done as an over cooked Moose roast. She enjoyed a normal honeymoon with the Alaskan people for someone that was a novelty. But like any administrator it takes about two years for people to find out they are not any good at what they are doing. I think that would have happened to Palin because she shows all the signs of a poor administrator and politician. Now she's been propelled into hyper political space and the criticisms and mistakes are going to compound and change people's opinion of her. Nobody wants to back a loser even a hometown loser.

Exactly! She's already started slipping in the polls and two weekends in a row now, in Anchorage, have seen HUGE (by Alaskan standards) Anti-Palin protests. IF they don't win (by stealing the election of course), she's finished. Alaskans are feeling that she has humiliated them.

Presidents and Vice Presidents do not exist within a debate framework but DO have to deal with close-up, in-depth discussions. I trust what we have seen in interviews far more than in a debate where, yes, all she has to do is remain fairly cool and give snappy though meaningless answers. Whatever would she do when called upon to make any decision other than "bomb 'em" or "drill, baby, drill"???
