ST. LOUIS — Under intense scrutiny, Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin stood her ground Thursday night against a vastly more experienced Joe Biden, debating the economy, energy and global warming, then challenging him on Iraq, "especially with your son in the National Guard."

The Alaska governor also noted that Biden had once said Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama wasn't ready to be commander in chief, "and I know again that you opposed the move that he made to try to cut off funding for the troops and I respect you for that."

Biden responded that John McCain, too, had voted against funding, and said the Republican presidential candidate had been "dead wrong on the fundamental issues relating to the conduct of the war."

The clash over Iraq was the most personal, and pointed, of the only vice presidential debate of the campaign, one in which Palin repeatedly cast herself as a non-Washington politician and part of a "team of mavericks" ready to bring change to a country demanding it.

"Maverick he is not on the important, critical issues," Biden shot back, referring to McCain. And he said Obama was the true candidate of change.

Palin, governor of her state for less than two years, faced enormous challenges as she walked onto the debate stage at Washington University. After five weeks as McCain's ticket-mate, her poll ratings have begun dropping as even some conservatives question her readiness for high public office.

Her solo campaign events are few, and she has drawn ridicule for some of her answers in the few interviews she has granted _ including her claim that Alaska's proximity to Russia gives her an insight into foreign policy.

From the opening moments of the debate, Democrat Biden sought to make McCain out as a straight-ahead successor to an unpopular President Bush. "He voted four out of five times for George Bush's budget, which put us a half-trillion dollars in debt and over $4 trillion in debt since he got here," Biden said of McCain.

Story continues below

In return, Palin accused Biden of reciting the past rather than looking to the future. "Americans are cravin' that straight talk" that McCain offers, she said midway in the 90-minute debate.

With one month until the election, polls show Obama with a small but perceptible lead, and Republican officials said earlier in the day that McCain had decided to pull out of Michigan, conceding the state to the Democrats. At the same time, his own aides said the campaign may soon begin to advertise in Indiana _ a state that has voted Republican in every presidential election since 1968.

After intense preparation _ including two days at McCain's home in Sedona, Ariz., Palin made only one obvious stumble, when she twice referred to the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan as "Gen. McClellan." His name is David McKiernan.

As is her custom on the campaign trail, she spoke in familiar terms, saying "betcha" rather than "bet you" and "gonna" rather than "going to."

She also spoke to the home folks. "Here's a shout-out" to third graders at Gladys Wood Elementary School in Alaska. She said they would all receive extra credit for watching the debate.

"Can I call you Joe?" she asked Biden as they shook hands before taking their places behind identical lecterns.

He readily agreed she could _ and she used it to effect more than an hour later. "Say it ain't so, Joe," she said as she smilingly criticized him at one point for focusing his comments on the Bush administration rather than McCain.

Biden's burden was not nearly as fundamental as hers. Although he has long had a reputation for long-windedness, he is a veteran of more than 35 years in the Senate, with a strong knowledge of foreign policy as well as domestic issues.

For much of the evening, the debate unfolded in traditional vice presidential fashion _ the running mates praising their own presidential candidate and denigrating the other.

Palin said Obama had voted to raise taxes 94 times _ an allegation that Biden disputed and then countered. By the same reckoning, he said, McCain voted "477 times to raise taxes."

They clashed over energy policy, as well, when Palin said Obama's vote for a Bush administration-backed bill granted breaks to the oil industry. By contrast, she said that as governor, she had stood up to the same industry, and noted that McCain had voted against the bill Obama supported.

Biden said that in the past decade, McCain had voted "20 times against funding alternative energy sources and thinks, I guess, the only answer is drill, drill, drill."

"The chant is, `drill, baby drill," Palin countered quickly, unwilling to yield to Biden on that issue _ or any other.

On the environment, Palin declined to attribute the cause of climate change to man-made activities alone. "There is something to be said also for man's activities, but also for the cyclical temperature changes on our planet," she said, adding that she didn't want to argue about the causes.

Biden said the cause was clearly man-made, and added, "If you don't understand what the cause is, it's virtually impossible to come up with a solution."

There is no way this woman has what it takes to be POTUS. Regardless of tonight's debate, she is just not experienced enough for the job. I am tired of what we've had for the last 8 years and I whole-heartedly welcome a reprieve in the form of an Obama Administration.

Palin should be appointed head of NASA, and only have new moons off when her credential invalidates.

Sarah "little mice skating in her penthouse roof" Palin might be a very good debater.....charming, able to thrown zingers, etc., etc., etc., etc. What is ABUNDANTLT clear is that she does not have the world view, policy positions, and curiosity to be a heartbeat away from becoming POTUS. This woman is an empty vessel ,and the American people are realizing the consequences of having an angry president and dumb running mate. The Bush experiment was a disaster and tragedy from beginning to bitter end.

Can't wait to have a prez I will be proud off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know why people are questioning her readiness. Palin herself said, quote, "I have that confidence. I have that readiness," Palin said. "And if you want specifics with specific policies or countries, you can go ahead and ask me. You can play 'stump the candidate' if you want to. But we are ready to serve."

Doesn't that put peoples minds at ease????

Even more than that -- everyone (media included) seems to have forgotten that these "gotcha" questions were ALSO asked of Joe Biden! You can hear his answers if you watch the show or if you look online. It's absurd to imply that anyone is trying to "stump" her (despite her inviting it...just like the trooper investigation) when they signed her up for the Presidential Questions series and Joe Biden has been answering the very same questions!

My brain hurts!

You just hit it right on the head. There is no such thing as a gotcha question and that is especially true with Palin's interviews with Gibbson and Couric. What a crock. Couric especially tried to help her and make it as easy as she could for Palin to look good. You could tell by the expression on Couric's face when Palin would blow the answer.

People, please. She can't answer EASY questions ("what newspaper do you read?"). All she has to do is not act like a nervous second grader tonight for the pundits to claim a "win." The voters know she is unfit for the job. The damage is done.

ok..ok..we love her, mccain...but still she's not ready to be president. we had a lovable doof in the white house for the past eight years and boy are we paying for it now (literally). time to wake up and realize likability is NOT a qualification. i'll choose competent and intelligent over likability anyday.

even if she does well in the debate...so what...she's still unfit to be serving in the VP capacity or God forbid the Presidency. actually neither of them is capable. she is a national security danger...who know what drivel can come out of that folksy mouth by mistake when she's charming the pakistanis for example...and now a fatwa...she might think that's a sandwich!

Biden could confront a sarcastic attack head on by simply pointing out that, yes, Sarah is very good at put-downs and sarcasm, but there are real job skills needed to run the biggest governbment in the world at a time of two wars and real crisis.

And then just ask, besides sarcasm, what else does she bring to the table?

Governor of the state with the highest drop out rate, highest rape and incest rates, highest meth addiction rates, most per capita pork, brideg AND road to Nowhere.

Mayor of a town that had a surplus when she took over and she left over $20 million in debt, made rape victims pay to gather evidence to prosecute their attackers - that alone is creepy.

And then just let her talk and keep feeding her enough rope.

I agree that Biden should point out every time she fails to answer a question but instead makes a snide remark, which is what I expect her to do all night.

If Senator Obama had said each and everything sorry statement that Gov. Palen said, the Republicans would have 7 field days. But, because Palin says them, it is "gotcha." If it were Obama, it would be "he's too unexperienced.....we told you so." Payback is a _________________ (you fill in the blank.)

The Republican talking points have spread across all their commentators...it is apparently mandatory for them to use the words "edited" or filtered" in discussing Palin's interview performances. Palin, talking on Sean Hannity's radio show, even used the word "censored".

Could someone please show me one example of Palin being edited, filtered or censored? As far as I can tell, she was asked reasonable questions by reasonable reporters, and came out looking like Miss Teen South Carolina...her circular and nonsensical answers were embarrassing and humiliating.

So please, America, pay no attention to the Republican talking heads who are once again attempting to distract you from the truth. Your eyes see. Your ears hear. What more do you need to ascertain what is happening?

i couldn't agree with you more.
people please use your own senses and common sense.
yesterday footage showing a fox reporter doing an impromtu poll in upstate PA where the people overwhelmingly show hands for Obama was called "a split" by the reporter.
they now have the nerve to think we are so stupid that we can't even trust what is right in front of our eyes live and in color!
show them that Americans aren't as stupid as Palin is shallow...

NO one in that cafe raised his or her hand for McCain - and yet the vote was called 'divided'. Desperate times call for desperate hype I suppose.

I know--the "the media censored me" excuse is so lame. Sarah, if the media actually HAD censored you, this website, Anderson Cooper, Larry King, Time, Washington Post, a large handful of traditionally conservative commentators/pundits, ad nauseum wouldn't be on TV or in print expressing concern over your apparent lack of concern, interest, or ability to run the country should it come to that.

And if you HAD been censored by the media, a growing majority of citizens wouldn't be making fun of your apparent lack of speaking skills or ability to form a coherent sentence. And also, Saturday Night Live, the Daily Show, and the Colbert Report wouldn't have near as much funny material as you've given them.

I think that statement was Freudian in nature--wishful thinking on Sarah's part. It would be to Sarah's advantage if we had a more censored media (than we already do...because you know they edited a ton of stuff. I'd like to see her entire Gibson and Kouric interviews played nation-wide, unedited).

Could she have meant to say the media have 'censured' her by calling her out on her ignorance - thereby proving the media correct?

Given Palin's "attack mode" debating style, this debate needs a referee more than it needs a moderator. Palin is the expert of sarcasm with a smile. Unless Ifill forces her, I doubt she will answer a single question all night. Instead she will use attacks (in conjunction with her extraordinarily annoying voice) to put Biden on the defensive.

This woman is vacuous, but she does have some political skills. It's how she became Governor.

Good to see that McCain has stooped to the level of the right wing nutjobs by trashing Gwen Ifill and lying. How do they or you, johnny boy, know it's pro-Obama? You haven't read it. McCain hasn't changed since 200. This IS the real McCain: a petty, mean craven hack.

Nonsense. He was an eight year old kid in 200! I hope for Palin's sake Ifill IS in the tank for Obama, asks tough questions. This would give her a chance to shine.

I doubt that very much.

"We've all had bad days," Thompson said, "and she's had some bad moments in some of these interviews...." Now there's the understatement of the decade! I haven't seen any moments in her interviews that were good...except for the entertainment value.

McCain, the repubs and Fox are good at this game of "pre-emptive stike". For the last 24 hours, they found in Gwen the "devil" that will be responsible for Palin's embarrassment. It won't fly.
Gwen is even under me pressure, and there are evry reason to believe that she will do a good job...

As for Biden, he just need to answer the questions as concisely as possible. Attack McCain, not Palin. Let Palin do the damage to her own self...

Well, Ifell is black, you know. Therefore, she is both in the tank for Obama, and scary.

I'm surprised they didn't accuse her of being an angry black woman - although, maybe they're saving that for if she dares to try and get a real answer out of Palin.

Doesn't it seem like Republicans went from being nasty bullies straight to whiny crybabies?

If Palin doesn't shine tonight, you can expect an onslaught of, "It's not fair! We're being picked on by nasty liberals!!", from here on in.....

Roooth I'm confused - you mean they weren't always whiny crybabies? They are nasty bullies, indeed, but once called on it, they have long resorted to whining. "You won't have Richard Nixon to kick around anymore" was just the starting point...
