Sandra Bernhard

Sandra Bernhard has spoken out against reports that she said vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin would be gang-raped if she came to New York during a Washington DC concert last month. Unapologetic for the "outrageous" routine she did give, Bernhard told Huffington Post that she did not use the term "gang rape," and in fact never said "rape" at all during the performance in question.

What started as an internet rumor snowballed and by late Wednesday afternoon had become an AP article (initially picked up by Huffington Post) that reported Bernhard had been cut from a benefit for a Boston women's shelter because of her performance and then inaccurately quoted her saying it.

Not true, says Bernhard, who is speaking out now because of the shelter, Rosie's Place, and the harm she fears this story has and will cause them.

"I really feel bad for Rosie's place," she told Huffington Post Thursday afternoon. "It was definitely manipulated by whoever put this out there to begin with."

So what happened during her show in DC? She said:

"I always contemporize my show and open with something of the moment. It so happens we are in the middle of a highly charged political time. And I'm a woman. And I'm concerned not only for myself but for my daughter and the future of all young women, specifically with Sarah Palin and her stance on reproductive rights.

"Being a comic, you go of on these really funny stream of consciousness tangents. So what I said, only funnier, was 'are you willing to have the experience of getting raped and then keeping your child?' Only I said it much funnier, and more fluidly. I never once said gang rape. Actually I never said rape. Of course what I said was outrageous, it's insane, and I'm completely unapologetic about it.

"I call a lot of people out during my show. Everyone from Joe Lieberman to Bill Clinton to Hillary. I called everybody out because everybody needs calling out on a lot of different subjects."

After her show, the Washington Post published a glowing review, In it, they wrote: "Bernhard declares in the D.C. Jewish Community Center that if Palin were to step onto her Manhattan turf, 'I'll tear her apart like a Wise natural kosher chicken.'"

From there, Bernhard says, it got twisted. "Secondhand someone got wind of something I said about Sarah Palin and then twisted it. Matt Drudge is the king of theater and he put 'gang rape' in quotes and it's turned into this ugly thing.

"The internet has served good and it's served bad. In this case it's a double-edged sword. In a weird way I get my voice out there, in another way it gets twisted and misrepresented."

And now she is out at Rosie's Place after sponsors balked at the press surrounding Bernhard. She told Huffington Post:

"It's a battered women's shelter. Irony of ironies. They are all sponsored by corporate sponsors, hedgefunds, bankers, etc...

"There I could have been, the spokesperson for a battered women's shelter, who will be directly affected by a McCain/Palin administration. The last people they are going to support would be these little groups, because they don't believe in federal funding. Well there isn't going to be any private money. There isn't going to be any money."

So on the record, what does Bernhard think?

"People like Sarah Palin and John McCain are cynical people and I don't think they care about this country. They always make it seem like the wealthy, intellectual, East Coast people just live their fabulous life. Well guess what? We can afford to take time to actually have compassion to reach out to people and really look at the world as the whole. I think the people who are these reactionaries don't. I think they're scared, I think they're driven by fear and doubt. I'm not. I'm driven by happiness and wanting this country to be fulfilled on every level. That's what my message was. It's done through my humor, it's doing through my irony and it's done through my sense of outrageousness.

"When this initially happened I decided I didn't much care about responding to it. Any great artist or performer worth their salt is never going to come out and explain why they did something. It's obvious for the audience who pays to come see you. They want to hear it. You are a catharsis for it. You are taking their thoughts and you are processing it for them into entertainment, into irony, into social commentary. If we aren't doing that, we're not doing our job."

In lieu of her performance, Bernhard is making a donation to the shelter and biding her time till her next performance on October 27th in Chicago.

"I'm tired of people being cynical in this country, especially our politicians, Bernhard added at the end, "We have our platform and people want to come hear us perform, so fuck you."

we just lost the finest comic there ever was& remember had George Carlin said it ,this could not of possibly been twisted out of proportion as it has been. Bottom line sara palin would feel different about her thought process toward's women , God Forbid had she been raped & then forced to pay for her own rape kit ,talk about adding insult to injury ,if that dont take the cake as my late father would say ,then I dont know what does. As a former Eagle River Ak. resident im throughly ashamed of this woman,& it just show's she may be female but she sure aint no Hillary.

Her actual act was seen by a ton of readers of an entertainment website two weekends ago ... it's on youTube but I don't care enough about this to go looking for it to prove she's lying. In fact she defended the comments she's denying uttering some 2 days later....

Gang rape? Hmmm Maybe it was a tasteless joke. I think it's tasteless and cruel for someone to say they would want a rape victim to suffer for 9 more months if not longer if they become pregnant as a result. I think it's tasteless for a woman to put a female rape victim through what I consider an ongoing gang rape, requiring them to either submit a bill for a rape kit to their insurance company, foot the bill or fill out paperwork indicating lack of ability to pay. Sick. All she is doing is pandering to males in power and placing her heels squarely on the faces of the women who surround her and need her support. Yeah right....

Sandra is a Hoot!

Bernhard did say it and now she's lying. She and/or people protecting her took down the original video and reposted a version where the rape remarks have been edited out.

But don't take my word for it. Here's the Google cache link to the original video posting:

Huffington Post has the journalist resources to get to the bottom of this.

I saw the original clip as it was posted on Huffpo. It did include the gang rape comment. However when I go back to the youtube clip, it has been edited to exclude that comment. Quick backtrack with a coverup. Too bad she can't own up to her words and take the crap like she dishes it.

Sandra kind of reminds me of PETA. Sometimes I agree with the methods and tactics...or is it a strategy and sometimes it's just embarassing.. like Ben and Jerry's breast milk ice cream. It' s really hit or miss. The real issue here is freedom of speach and performance. Acts like Manson, Gwar and Bernhardt may be shocking for some so it's simple stupid... just don't buy tickets.

JodyMcg - there are NOW laws against HATE CRIME! And no doubt that has a lot to do with why she made sure that video was taken down! She could have been prosecuted! You can't go around heaping psychological violence and hatred on people! Even though a lot of people have and continue to get away with it on the blogs during this primary!

Whatever she said, I'm not going to say anything bad about Bernhard, but i've never found her teribly funny to begin with. She's one of those people I'm not terribly proud to have on whatever "my side" of an issue is.

I've never found Sandra funny. I remember when she hosted a show on comedy central called the A-List. She would just wear crazy outfits and say "girlfriend!" or "honey!" at the end of every sentence. She has good timing and a very theatrical performance style but her content is usually pretty hackneyed and juvenile.

Oh, Sandra, we hardly knew ya.

I'm sure ya were really proud of yourself when ya first said it (and it was widely reported at the time that you had said it) but now you are running from your own words.

Today is 10/3, so my question is, if this did take place and was indeed so shocking, why would it have taken so long to come out? Scritti...supposedly you witnessed this...why wouldn't you or anyone else report it a few weeks ago? Because it didn't happen?

http://gawker.com/5052743/oh-hey-here-is-video-of-sandra-bernhards-attack-on-sarah-palin

Just because it is not seen on HuffPo, does not mean it didn't happen. I looked for it here after Gawker had two articles - assumed that it would be too awkward for the Palin haters to comment on while maintaining their dignity LOL.

?? "report" it where and to whom a few weeks ago? what are you talking about? i'm just some dopey blog poster like you. i certainly told my friends about it after the show and only "reported" it here after it became an issue as to whether she said it or not and i DISTINCTLY remember her saying it. trust me, anyone who saw the show would never forget that segment. she went on a long (and actually very funny) riff on Palin (with the glasses and everything-before fey did it on snl) and took it there with the whole gang rape segment. 100% accurate "reporting" here. take it or not.

Sandra Bernard minus the lipstick or with lipstick, has a personality that matches her legendary beauty. She is backtracking now, not so much out of concern for Rosie's womens shelter, but to make sure there that her paychecks dont become collateral damage in the age of the internet.

Free speech is a great thing.

She said what she said, and rather than apologize for it she has chosen to lie about it.

Free speech extends to lying, too, unless you are under oath and get caught.

If like Sandra Bernhart, you can stomach everyone knowing you lie, then you are all set to do it.

You like Sarah Palin??? Oh god. She annoys me to no end. She relishes killing animals and harasses people who are not corrupt like she is. She lies, repeatedly, and well. In addition, her belief system is incredibly uneducated and scary. She doesn't love America. Her husband is affiliated with the Alaskan Independence party and she gave a speech to them.

Also, I'm tired of those glasses already.
