I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Biden

Below is a round up of reaction to Thursday night's vice presidential debate:

The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder called the debate a wash in terms of who won, but that Palin's performance was pretty uneven:

To practiced ears, Palin memorized and repeated talking points and Biden responded to the questions and argued. Palin dodged questions and seemed vague; but then again, for those whose only impression of Palin has been the one Tina Fay performed on Saturday Night Live, she cleared the bar. Biden seemed a little unsure how tough to be at the beginning of the debate; by the beginning of the final third, he hit his stride. As the debate wound on, Palin seemed less agile when it came to constructing sentences and answers. Lots of key phrases, weird placement of conjunctions, so the gist of what she was saying was there, but it wasn't terribly clear.

Meanwhile his colleague Andrew Sullivan thought Palin was dominating Biden at the beginning, but that she faded quickly:

Biden's sobriety and authority and call for fundamental change is both reasonable and solid. It will resonate, I think. As you can read, I began this debate feeling that she was steam-rolling him. She was. But it was a steam-roller coming at you on fumes, not real fuel. She doesn't have it. Maybe one day she might. But not now. Biden's peroration was very, very strong. There is no contest here.

CNN's Bill Schneider was critical of the substance of Palin's responses:

Palin's answers do not lack confidence, they lack coherence.

The New Republic's Michael Crowley thinks Palinmania may have run its course:

Biden was about right--neither too hot nor too cold. His points sometimes digressed more than Palin's, but what he lacked in crispness he made up for in stature and confidence. And his multiple references to Scranton went over nicely in Pennsylvania, no doubt.

Bottom line: She won't be off the ticket, but there will be no second round of Palinmania, either. This was a highly entertaining cultural spectacle which probably won't have much effect on a race that is now clearly Obama's to lose.

On MSNBC, Newsweek's Howard Fineman compared Palin's performance to that of a "wolverine attacking the pant leg of a passerby."

Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo notes that the debate probably helped both tickets, but that shouldn't overshadow that Biden was the stronger of the two:

One thing that I think is easy to overlook here is that Biden did really well. He started a little slow. But he quickly got into his groove and in the second half there were several answers that he took the debate squarely to John McCain in a way that I thought was very effective.

So basically a win for Biden because he just did a lot better and it's Obama-Biden who want the trajectory of the race to stay as is. She made herself less of an embarrassment and gave core Republicans a reason to stop being embarrassed. But there were a bunch of flatly false or nonsensical things she said -- and we'll see those picked apart over the next few days.

Politico's Ben Smith thinks Palin's performance neutralized any negative effects she was having on the ticket, but didn't achieve much beyond that:

My quick take is that Palin passed a pass-fail test, though she flagged as the debate went on. Though she was chosen for her emotional connection, she was the drier of the two candidates. But if the central worry was that she'd be a drag on the ticket, she likely returned herself to the same status as Biden and every other running mate in memory: not, ultimately, a major factor at the polls.

Biden, meanwhile, was -- as he should have been, given his experience and skill at this -- a more effective presence, and a more lucid one. He effectively, and emotionally, used the forum to drive the Obama campaign's core message that McCain isn't the man for the economic moment.

I'm not an American, but this is maybe the most important time int he last few decades. Solidariy around this site will not help getting even one soul in voting fr OBAMA.

What are you going to do to help the OBAMA campaign tmorrow. Let us move only in this direction, stop the negative strategy and the PALIN wasting time efforts. WE already know she is not qualified.

We will all blame ourselves in one month, on the amount of words and time we spent on her insteading of talking to the hearts and minds of all thos hesitating people in favor of Obama.
All the commentating, she blinked, she didn't know what newspaper, SHE SHE SHE... this is TRAP, and a direct way to loose these elections!!!!! WAKE UP! PLEASE!!!!!!

We do not want a dark era in fron of us!!!!!

What is everyone of you going to do tomorrow, the next weekend, the next weeks, to help save this country from a total decline? A short answer will be great and make you feel into it....

I expect Arianna, and other writers to stop this "craziness over Palin" and address the people here in the right direction!!!

I don't begrudge anyone getting their "community" fix here. But I agree -- we waste too much time on her. That's why I'm glad Biden did so well tonight...we need to talk about HIM everywhere we go. About Obama.

I've donated, and will again. I have the signs, I have the discussions, and when my schedule breaks, I will call or door-knock.

We all have to work like it's a dead heat to make it a LANDSLIDE. This time WE THE PEOPLE need a MANDATE for sanity, for the Constitution, for peace, for the middle class, a change for not only us, but the WORLD.

Joe Six-Pack? Winking? Gettin' all folksy and thinking no one will notice that you're reciting your answers...Sarah Palin is canned ham all the way.

It worked for Reagan.

Youll also see VERY CLEAR evidence of a wire over her right shoulder that came loose in the latter half.

So she was not just 'canned ham', she was fed canned ham.

Palin acquitted her self better than I expected but she did not impress me at all. I want the VP to know facts and history, not just talking points. I want my VP not to be like me, but to be more intelligent than me, more knowledgeable, more everything.

She was pretty cold after Biden talked about losing his wife and having to raise his sons as a single parent. She just blabbered on about McCain and how much he is a maverick. That bugged me alot

I picked up on that as well.
Also that she seemed to just regurgitate the lines off her cards.
I think she is oblivious.

I found Palin to be arrogant and flippant. Those little quips she kept throwing like, "their you go again, Joe" and trying to sound folksy and rural, was not impressive.

She kept looking at her notes and basically said she was not going answer questions that she didn't like. When in the hell did the candidate have the authority to become the "moderator".

We just went through 8 years of having a hick at the top of the ticket. Did they think dropping that role down to second in line would help with some voters? She belongs in Hollywood on "Reba" or "My Name is Earl" NOT in the White House.

To all HuffingtonPost readers and writers:
First I'll say that I'm not an American.
Let me tell you what I see from the side:
All users in this site are already OBAMA voters. Both you, and many media channels gone into a negative cycle of picking "Palin" which is what the republicans have wanted all along.
WE already know who she is. This is not the point now!

Oa month is left, and the polls are not smiling. Please, stop spending to much time on this solidarity, and go get new Obama supporters. Stop the negative straategy. This time might be one of the most important times of your life. If Mccain wins, I promise you you'll get 4 years of Tina Fey. If you prefer that then my lips are sealed. I doubt it. Think about all those who are really confused, and try to get reach them. Don't be cynical, explain, give only one month now of you life because this can be critical. Even if you're in sure Dem state, think what you can do do convince one more. Not by laughing at Palin, this doesn't reach these people.

Please go out there to save your country. Solidarity around here will not help anyone. No republican come in here and read you comments even though cool. We will have a lot of time to do this later.

If any of you share my feelings, just write in a sentence what YOU are going to do tomorrow...

thanks for reminding us to put our efforts to positive use in this home stretch.

i think we come here too to let off steam and have a way to connect with others who feel the way we do but again, i appreciate someone from another country expressing their concern and support. it is great to hear that others outside of our country are supporting obama-biden.

cheers!

I responded to a similar comment above. I think one value people get from here is it helps energize them for the other work.

But you correct that citizens can become to fixated on blog comments when they need to be out taking action.

Tomorrow, I will make my second donation. After that, it will depend on my schedule, but I hope to do what I did on the Kerry campaign and get my Internet list for making calls.

Palin's selection to be Mcacain's VP mocks our intelligence and demeans women and men of this country. Her interview with Couric was a historical example of our fear. She reminds me of Bush in pink. Remember how media praised him- such a likable guy, capacity to connect to just about anyone!

Did anyone notice...her prep cheat sheet passages did not include Dick Cheney's "part of legislative branch bizarre answer" and hence she was caught unprepared for that question...ha she agreed with Dick Cheney's stance-on national TV!!
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2007/06/22/cheney_asserts_hes_part_of_the_legislative_branch/

Now if the pundits can't grab that one...no one can!
