NR's Rich Lowry: Palin "Sent Little Starbursts Through The Screen"

I'm sure I'm not the only male in America who, when Palin dropped her first wink, sat up a little straighter on the couch and said, "Hey, I think she just winked at me." And her smile. By the end, when she clearly knew she was doing well, it was so sparkling it was almost mesmerizing. It sent little starbursts through the screen and ricocheting around the living rooms of America. This is a quality that can't be learned; it's either something you have or you don't, and man, she's got it.

As an intelligent and politically astute woman, I am insulted by Palin's mocking glibness and her condenscending sneers - all barely masked behind her winking, blinking, hick-slang talk and flirtatious antics. What's wrong with holding our political leaders to a high standard of excellence in their character, accomplishments, intelligence? This isn't a beauty contest or a version of American Idol. If elected, she would represent us across the world. Does she really represent the best of us? She's a slick pol, gotta give her that. But she's like a used car saleman...fast-talkin', borderline sleazy. She has clearly learned to use her sexuality and her "good looks" to manipulate people and situations to her own advantage. But she reduces us. She gives women a bad name. Thru her actions she shackles women to a stereotype we've fought against for years. Shame on her.

I don't want a VP who is going to flaunt their sexual appeal... I want a VP who can carry a conversation with intelligence,not a script to follow everytime...Remember the old saying "one day your looks will be gone".

I received a forwarded message from a Mary Kay Gamel a literary and classics professor at UCSC (she enclosed all her contact information). In this message she tells a story about a vacation she took with her husband to Fiji in 2000 just before McBush’s run for president. McBush and Cindy were there with Bridgett, their adopted Bangladeshi daughter. This was a small resort with bungalows and communal meals. She says that McBush arrived at every meal with books that he felt the need to read to the other guests. They wanted to be polite so everyone let him interrupt their vacation with his patter. When he was confronted his retort was, “Do you know who I am!”

He would talk to anyone who would listen about how Indo-Chine women had the best figures that corn fed American born women don’t have and made comments to other women at the resort about how they should stop eating because they needed to lose weight and continued nagging one woman until she cried. Remember these people were on vacation.

There were other stories of profoundly obnoxious behavior. But the worst thing I read in the message was that he told Ms. Gamel that Bridgette was Cindy’s idea. “She just went and adopted this thing without even asking me. You can't imagine how people stare when I wheel this ugly, black thing around in a shopping cart in Arizona. No, it wasn't my idea at all."

I did some further research and this story may not be true exactly as depicted. The woman named in the story was only a person who forwarded it. Another woman wrote it but Snopes cannot confirm. I apologize for not having checked it first.

Is this guy insane or just thinking with his other head? I really don't think that when last night's Sarah Palin who reminds me of Francis McDormitt's character in Fargo ("Are ya sure?") sits across the table from other leaders that the winking will do any good. Perhaps she can throw one of her SO rehearsed one-liners to them. I know this opinion does not represent the majority of men, so I will not stereotype, but if you see "starbursts" when she winked, you should have your head examined. What is sad is that she has to resort to cutesy, at times sexually suggestive, antics.

Yeah, my 83 year-old father-in-law is totally in lust with her. He wants to vote for her based on her looks and the way she sounds. He says he doesn't really listen to her, he just like the way she looks. Is there any wonder she has higher ratings with men than with women. I've met women like her before - uses her looks and flirts her way up the ladder, and her shortcomings are overlooked.
