Democrats cheered on Wednesday when news broke that John McCain's campaign was abandoning Michigan, pulling down its ads and sending staffers to other states.

Almost immediately, an organization called Progress Michigan let loose with a taunt, demanding that McCain keep pouring resources into the state in order to explain to voters his "support for outsourcing" and the "failed economic policies" of the Bush administration.

Many speculated that McCain would now turn his focus to Pennsylvania. But United Steelworkers International president Leo Gerard tells the Huffington Post that the state could soon go the way of Michigan.

"We're seeing -- from the several hundred of our people working every day, hand-billing at the plants -- the last two weeks have really been breaking Senator Obama's way," Gerard said over the phone from his office in Pittsburgh. "In particular, I think folks are sort of not taking John McCain as serious as they were, when they see his vacillation last week. 'I'm not going to debate. I'm going to whip House Republicans into shape. Not."

Gerard also said that the bailout bill is hurting McCain disproportionately. "There's lot of anger at this bailout bill, even though people recognize we have to do something. But our people think it's directly tied to Bush, and they tie bush to McCain. That's the sense of what I've heard back from our people, that the race is breaking out."

A sharp turn toward Obama hasn't been reflected in the polling thus far. However, even as McCain surrogates have repeatedly touted Pennsylvania as a possible pick-up state, Obama has maintained a stubborn lead over the last six months, according to Pollster.com's best-fit line of all surveys taken.

All told, the consistency of Obama's lead in Pennsylvania is not too terribly different from the steady advantage that compelled McCain to bail out of Michigan this week.

Obama is protecting that lead. He delivered a stemwinder to a crowd in Abington, Pennsylvania Friday morning. After referencing the latest dismal job loss numbers, Obama told the crowd that the Republicans have had their turn running the economy. "We've tried it their way. It hasn't worked. And it won't work now. But let me tell you what will work," he said, before ticking off his standard economic litany.

Watch:

Gerard, for one, also thinks Obama is becoming more comfortable talking about kitchen table issues. His union originally endorsed John Edwards during the primary season. But even after their favored candidate abandoned the race, Gerard recounts that it took the union members several weeks to reach a consensus on Obama -- perhaps, as was widely guessed at the time, because his cool demeanor was not resonating with the white working class audience.

Now, though, Gerard says that perception is turning. "Obama seems to have become more passionate. He seems to be angry about what's gone on. I watched part of his speech [on Thursday]. That kind of speech could go to standing ovations in a union hall. If he can keep that up level of intensity, what I call constructive anger about what the system has done, I think that he'll connect. ... And McCain will wind up campaigning just in Georgia before it's over."

It is apparent to me that with McCain's BIG announcement that he is pulling out of MIichigan and now Penn. is just another Rove tactic to get his base fired up and to piss off the "not so certains". Why else would McYuck announce to the entire world that he's pulling out ... it's just more bullsh*& from the Republicans. And now Sarah is doing her little "oh let me try to win them over" routine. It's all a ploy! McCain will go down the line of battleground states and make huge announcements that he's pulling out....anyone who has any common sense can see this as just another Rove tactic...and it may work for those uninformed.

I wouldn't believe a thing the McC camp states. I agree, it does sound fishy. Hopefuly O will continue to advertise there. I have no doubt that Barack's Michigan ground game will be working hard until election day.

Thanks for sharing that. I grew up in a staunchly Republican family (I’m 46, white and a college graduate. I’m an office worker.). There was no racism in my family, but a strong anti-union slant. It took me up until I worked for a company that had 77,000 American workers when I started and when I left there were only 44,000 to do a 180 on my beliefs. That company was Textron and throughout that massive push towards shipping jobs off to China their stockholders cheered. I’m very sickened and revolted by the actions of the CEO and his corporate henchmen.

I hope to see a resurgence of unions in our country. I hope to see corporate greed replaced by compassion and patriotism. Buy American and start now. Help push the Free Choice Act by writing you congressmen. Flood corporations with your emails and make it known to them that the American people will not stand for their greed and the harm to America they have caused the American people. If you Google these large corporations you can find out how to email their top executives directly. Don’t be threatening or condescending just let them know that you hope they will do right by America going forward.

It' a global thing, your elections, don't you know? Don't you think the rest of the world should be demanding regime change right now. I'm trying to blog and comment every day to make a difference.

Current state-by-state polling electoral vote totals:

Politico – Obama 353 McCain 185
Electoral-vote.org - Obama 338 McCain 185 (15 ties)
FIVETHIRTYEIGHT - Obama 333.2 McCain 204.8
Wiki.bulsme.com - Obama 353 McCain 185

This race is a blowout by any measure.

Here is further bad news for the Republicans:

If the Republican Party does not change, they will become extinct.

The United Steelworkers International president. If you don't believe that United Steelworkers are an essential voting block in Western Pennsylvannia then you are fooling yourself.

About as much a non story as pulling out of Mi.

Pa is union country - and proud.

If McDoodly can't hold in Mi - those are the same folks he can't in Pa and Oh.

It's gonna be a blowout.

Puling out of Michigan and perhaps PA? Uhmm...isn't that, as sarah said, a white flag of surrender. The surge worked in Iraq why wouldn't a surge work in Michigan. It would seem that this is a flip of the fundamental philosophy McCain espouses. ..Oh I get it...staying in the fight, which he says he has always done, would cost him money. But since staying in Iraq is wasting our money that is ok. Hypocrites and Pharisees is what they are and the evidence is in plain view.

83% or more in this country think we are on the wrong track. Bush's approval ratings are 20% or less. McCain is promising a three peat and Gee Howdy Now Palin is saying that the constitution allows the VP's job should be expanded.

It doesn't take a statistician to understand that the numbers being pushed by the msm pollsters are not possible. It makes sense that the bean counters in the McCain camp are cutting their losses by pulling out of states they know they have no chance of winning. The McCain camp knows what the pollsters will not print.

No surprise here that Pahlin is out of the strategy loop. This supports most rational people's theory that she is nothing more than a life size prop.

McCain's blow up doll. With lipstick and a wink.

Palin is a mockery of the equality for which women have labored (yes, labored, long and hard with blood & guts).

Clear evidence that Johnny does not make decisions with his brain.

Well now if McCain keeps bailing out of states, the polls show him almost behind ever where even in his own state. Then the best thing for him to do is buy another house in Alaska and try to sell his crap to the people there. Oh Dag it!! that right Sarah has a problem there too. Oh well he just need to sit back with joe six-pack crack open a beer have a few moose burgers, and relax this is a done deal..

John McCain should probably pull out of PA because he is certainly not winning Philadelphia or it's suburbs. The middle part of the state cannot overcome the Philly vote, so therefore, if a candidate doesn't win in the metro area, they lost....particularly Delaware, Bucks, and Montgomery Counties.

Palin's 'cheesesteak gaffe' killed McCain's campaign in South Philly, basically one of the only areas in the city that votes Republican more so than Democrat.

If John McCain is to win Pennsylvania, he is going to somehow galvanize those fence-sitters....but everyday that is becoming more and more of a daunting task.

They're already here, mts. They have an office and a very small group of volunteers working on their campaign right here in my borough.

I will keep an eye on the office though, and let you know when they pack up and head out!

If Palin and McCain can't communicate with each other over campaign strategies, how are they going to use bipartisanhip to bring about "change you can believe" and put country first?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:54 AM on 10/04/2008

That's just it, they can't. Two "mavericks" that put their own personal ambitions ahead of everything else including the country, families and even the survival of their own party. Blind ambition blurs clear vision - is that who you want in the driver's seat?
