Weeks out from election day, Fox News has begun devoting extensive coverage to a scandal alleging "deep ties" between Barack Obama and a "radical" group of election thieves. The segments have aired repeatedly on the network's morning show as well as on prime time programs like Hannity & Colmes.

On Friday morning, capping of a full week of coverage on the topic, the hosts of Fox & Friends introduced a segment on Obama and the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) by saying:

"The community group ACORN under scrutiny for potential voter fraud issues and Barack Obama's long-term relationship with the radical group also coming more to light. But is the mainstream media keeping both under wraps?" [...]

"Briefly, we have been talking about ACORN, [which] has got a long and storied past involving voter fraud across the country... What is Barack Obama's connection to ACORN?"

The ball was then passed to Seton Motley from the conservative Media Research Center, who charged "three stages of connection" between Obama and ACORN. "He was a lawyer for the organization. He then served his years as a trainer of activists for the organization. And when he was named Chairman of the Board by terrorist William Ayers to the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, they funneled money to, amongst many other places, ACORN. So there is three stages of relationship with them."

Hours after the segment aired, the Republican National Committee emailed out the segment and YouTube video to its list of reporters (its 18th email in two months referencing Obama and ACORN).

The Obama campaign already has an entry about the ACORN issue on its "Fight the Smears" website. Broadly, the campaign admits that Obama represented a coalition of groups that sued Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar in order to get him to implement the federal "Motor-Voter" voting access law. However, far from a "radical" collective, even the U.S. Department of Justice joined the raft of groups Obama helped represent in Illinois, and their collective challenge was successful.

So Obama aides say he wasn't "representing" ACORN individually, but as part of a larger coalition. And as ties go, this one isn't particularly deep or damning. It also happens to be the only alleged tie raised on Fox this week that is incontestably true.

Story continues below

As for the other two charges of ACORN ties, an Obama aide calls them complete fictions. "The Republican National Committee is using smoke and mirrors in an attempt to distract from John McCain's more of the same plans in a change election," said spokesman Ben LaBolt. "The fact is, Barack Obama was never an employee of ACORN, he never served as an ACORN organizer or an ACORN trainer. As an attorney, he successfully challenged Governor Edgar to enforce the federal Motor Voter law, making sure voting was as accessible for Illinois residents as the law required. With contorted logic, you can create a tenuous chain of links to connect anybody to anything. Just ask Kevin Bacon."

Seton Motley, reached at his Media Research Center office Friday afternoon, abruptly refused to engage in depth with the Obama camp's response to his Fox & Friends segment (after first saying "I'm all ears").

Asked whether he would similarly condemn the Justice Department for joining ACORN in the suit against Illinois, he said, "well, yes I would, but that's not the issue." Before the Obama spokesman's other charges could be detailed, Motley put the brakes on the conversation. "The name of our group is Media Research Center," he said, noting that the only purpose of his effort on Fox was to draw attention to a lack of stories on the matter. "I'm not going to be able to respond to challenges from the Obama campaign."

Instead, Motley recommended that any interested person check out Stanley Kurtz's long article from May in the National Review -- headlined "Inside Obama's Acorn."

But while Kurtz's piece is stuffed with innuendo and plausible-sounding arguments that ACORN and Obama share some broad political objectives, it notably does not prove that Obama ever worked for the group, helped them organize, knew about any instances of voter fraud, or condoned their controversial demonstration tactics.

In fact, the article sometimes suggests the opposite. "Does that mean Obama himself schooled Acorn volunteers in disruptive 'direct action?' Not necessarily," Kurtz judges. Pretty spicy stuff. Elsewhere, when trying to compare Obama's community organizing work to that of ACORN, Kurtz can only manage a weak equivalence: "Part of Obama's work, it would appear, was to organize demonstrations, much in the mold of radical groups like Acorn."

And though Kurtz marshals a lot of material about friends of Obama who are or were active in the group, he never provides any evidence that Obama "worked" or "organized" for them -- the key charges being repeated so often on Fox News this week.

However, it's likely that the strategy behind the smear is not to prove the charges alleged, but rather to have an excuse to mention key phrases like "community organizing," and "Bill Ayers." Judged by that standard, the ACORN attack is indeed a smash of a smear.

Fox is clearly attempting to smear Obama. If they were really concerned about voter fraud (as we all should be) they would have discussed the GOP consultant Michael Connell who was subpoenaed on September 22 in a case that alleges tampering in the 2004 election.

~~~~~~
From Alternet article:
"The interest in Mike Connell stems from his association with a firm called GovTech, which he had spun off from his own New Media Communications under his wife Heather Connell's name. GovTech was hired by Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell to set up an official election website at election.sos.state.oh.us to presented the 2004 presidential returns as they came in.
Connell is a long-time GOP operative, whose New Media Communications provided web services for the Bush-Cheney '04 campaign, the US Chamber of Commerce, the Republican National Committee and many Republican candidates. This in itself might have raised questions about his involvement in creating Ohio's official state election website.
However, the alternative media group ePlubibus Media further discovered in November 2006 that election.sos.state.oh.us was hosted on the servers of a company in Chattanooga, TN called SmarTech, which also provided hosting for a long list of Republican Internet domains."
Personally, the Connell's case cited above worries me a lot more. And yet, Fox doesn't mention it. Hmmm....
And now with the voter fraud going on in Ohio...Campaigners for Obama picking up homeless to vote for Obama? This is going to be a big issue sooner than later with early voting and same day register/voting.
    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:49 PM on 10/03/2008
I believe even the homeless were American citizens and deserved the right to vote. But apparently you do not believe that should be the case.
Have no problem with Homeless voting at all. Just want to know HOW you are going to check anything and prevent voting more than once. How do you verify which district? And encouraging them to vote one way or the other, especially when many homeless have mental issues. Shameless. Having worked with and researched the subject, many homeless are not the most well-balanced people in the world.
"Voter fraud" is a straw man, a phony argument concocted by the power elite to whip up anger by their less educated followers. It rarely exists, and it never decides elections.
Election fraud, the crime of suppressing votes--now that is POWER, and it is highly effective.
GET WITH IT. You are being led against your own interests.
Same day registration coupled with no photo ID required make the homeless worth big cash on election day. They can vote as many times as they want.
The homeless in Ohio could do for Obama what the college kids did for gore and Kerry in Wisconsin.
    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:04 PM on 10/03/2008
Why couldn't anyone do this? It wouldn't just be homeless, it could be oil company executives, if it as you describe. My understanding is that these votes and registrations ARE checked against records before they are actually tabulated. In a sense they are all "provisional". Multiple registrations...and vote casts would be caught. Just as any multiple registration (or change of address) would be discovered.
This noise about ACORN has gotten louder whereas the Ayers crap didn't. He needs to get out in front of this, as he has with all of the other half-assed s*** that they have slung so far.
As with all other manufactured scandals the Republicans try to raise, the more one delves into it, the less there is to discover. The REAL scandals regarding Bush/McCain outshine these like a supernova.
Whats funny is mccain's camp is the one doing voter intimidation.
As for Fox News since only people who are GOP Conservatives watch that channel they have no effect on independents and swing voters.
Exactly...what about the Republican school administrator/voter registrar that told students from out of state in Virginia that they couldn't vote there...or lose their financial aid. Utter lie, and utterly illegal.
Or the fact that the GOP was going to use foreclosure lists to create a list from which to contact by mail...and if the people didn't reply to their junk mail...they were going to "challenge" their right to vote.When it was revealed they then tried to deny by claiming "We weren't going to use the foreclosure lists to block people at the polls". But those were weasle-words...they WERE going to use the lists to write letters...and use THOSE to create the lists.
And then there was the GOP sending out to tens of thousands of people registration forms telling folks to re-register if they had moved. But the registration form was flawed...it had erroneous information on it that was asked to be filled out. The Voter Registrar said that if submitted these forms wouuld be annulled. Imagine that! Republicans not wanting people to vote?
Wonder what zip codes those were sent to...bet it's a "Blue Area".
Hopefully this time I won't be censored, but why do Americans listen to FOX, they are owned by a person who only became an American citizen because he knew there was an audience that would make him money.
He knew he could manipulate a certain section of the American population so he could enrich himself. He knew he could meddle in politics and pervert the American people through division.
There are about 4 million that watch nightly and more that tune in depending on what event is playing. Probably at any time during the day there is less than 1% of the population listening to them, but there is less than 1% listenin to CNN and MSNBC combined.
It is all about money, and look where that has landed us. The people at FOX are sad and hopefully the population will at some time turn away from the hate and division that FOX is so known for.
As for the GOP, well, the last 15 years should give us some idea as to the reason for the destruction of society as we knew it.
Fox News! All Smear! All the time!
Look at who is WORKING for Fox people! And Obama is going to be JUST FINE!! If he flailed around as much about all the lies and attempts at smear, like McCain does about the economy, he'd be so tired that HE'D be 8 points down. Besides that, Dukakis made a good suggestion. We ALL NEED TO ORGANIZE TRUTH SQUADS and GO TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT OBAMA! Sheesh! You want him campaigning or dropping everything and answering things that have been PROVEN and REPROVEN as FALSE!!???
I'm also a former ACORN organizer, by the way! I've seen bits and pieces of this coming all along. Surely you don't think that that Republican Convention speech by the Governor of Alaska was the END of it do you?
jacqmac .... Honestly pointing out all of the corruption that has gone on, is going on now, and will continue to go on in the Obama political career, IS NOT A SMEAR. It is simply called truth. I realize those of you on the left fringes are not familiar with truth and honesty, as it is something you have never tried, but truth about Obama is not a smear, it is just fact.
One of the worst trademarks of the U.S. are the political medias passing themselves off as news medias and then talking hate mongers like Lou Dobbs and Rush Limbaugh. Lou Dobbs is one of the most dishonest jerks in the media and should be on Fox so all the bigots are in one arena.
Dobbs a right wing extremist and purveyor of hate tries to pass himself off as an Independent but then only the biggest jerks have know better than this if they have watched his program more than a couple of times.
Dobbs hats Bush more than he hats Obama.
Remember his series of specials during the '06 midterms? "Broken Borders."... "Broken Government." ... "The War on the Middle Class"...
Dobbs is like Cafferty without the sophistication.
I don't know what state you're in, but that is against the law here in NY.
I've done voter registrations for Obama, and depending on the venue, sometimes we were allowed to show our Obama endorsement, sometimes we did the event with no visible preference. Either way you take their completed form and return to your local BOE asap or the applicant can mail it in on their own.
Republicans only. That's nasty and should be reported to the BOE in that area.
The "One-Stop Early Vote" program in Ohio is hardly a nefarious plot by ACORN, but was written by Ohio Republicans and instituted during the administration of Republican Gov. Robert Taft three years ago. And I'd be willing to bet that Mr. Seton Motley of the Media Research Institute knows that.
Let me get this straight ... you think telling the whole truth about Obama is a smear? No one here seems to mind that Obama and William Ayres are close personal friends for many years. That is a proven fact. Would anyone here be upset if McCain had been friends with Tim McVeigh?
No one here seems to mind that Obama and Pastor Wright are close personal friends for many years. That is a proven fact. Would anyone here be upset if McCain had been friends with David Duke?
