Debatead

Barack Obama's campaign is already out with an ad based on the vice presidential debate -- specifically, Sarah Palin's inability to defend John McCain's health care plan. The clip uses Joe Biden's line that the McCain-Palin health care plan is a "bridge to nowhere." Watch:

The Politico reports that the ad is part of a broader health-care focused strategy:

Obama's aides said the campaign would key in not on something Palin said, but rather on what she didn't: Her failure to offer a detailed defense of McCain's plan to finance a $5,000 healthcare tax credit by treating employers' healthcare payments as taxable - something Democrats relish hitting both as a "radical" healthcare scheme and a tax hike.

The campaign had already decided to attack McCain's healthcare plan, and the debate exchange will help drive that focus, they said.

"We're on a big offensive on John McCain's healthcare plan," said Obama campaign manager David Plouffe. "I think Sen. Biden did a terrific job today of describing why middle class families should fear John McCain's health care plan. She didn't answer the attack."

Palin's silence - she attacked Obama's plan as "government run," but didn't return to McCain's - was "a huge missed opportunity," Plouffe said, "because I will assure you this: Every voter in every battleground state is going to know that John McCain is taxing healthcare for the very first time. Twenty-one million people lose their healthcare because small businesses will drop it."

If you want to understand why Palin survived, you have to understand the format. NO FOLLOW UP QUESTIONS! Without that rule you would have seen a much different debate and outcome.

Its my opinion that Gwen Ifill was a soft moderator. No follow up questions. I am not looking for any sensationalism here but simple questions and answers and follow up questions, which would have given Palin no opportunity to repeat the same scripted talking points irrelevant to the topic.

You get a five grand tax credit. Well thanks......
When people cant afford groceries for their families, mortgages, rent, college, gas for their vehicles....does he honestly think people are going to go out and buy their health insurance? That is the last thing on their minds! My husband and I both are in health care and the ERs are full of people who need care, and know the ER's can't turn them away. They are simply under or un-insured.

So, when you can't afford the basics of life, and you are just scraping to get from paycheck to paycheck, purchasing your own health care coverage just cause you get a tax credit in April is a little far-fetched for the poor in this country....

It is like saying, "we are going to raise the tax credit for children to 5 grand a piece....so go get knocked up!!! But we won't help you feed them!!!"

But, I guess when you have been insured your intire life like McCain has been, you don't really understand....and by the way, he has been insured by the goverment his intire life....

Bravo! and Ditto...

But remember, that $5,000 tax credit doesn't come to you, it goes directly to your insurance carrier. And what McCain fails to mention is whether that $5k is only for full family coverage, or if that's the amount for an individual, a couple or a single parent with child(ren) too.

So, if you are in good health and you purchase a policy with a high deductable, i.e. catastrophic coverage, which has a much lower monthly premium, you can't use any of that "tax credit" for your out of pocket medical expenses. If you have a copay, it doesn't cover that. If you don't have drug coverage, it won't cover that. If you don't purchase riders such as vision, chiropractic, etc. it won't cover any of those expenses.

So, you buy a policy, the $5k goes directly to the insurance company, and you get to pay the balance of any premium overages and all out-of-pocket expenses. And if you think the health insurance industry won't "adjust" their premiums accordingly, I have a bridge to nowhere to sell ya!

(wink, wink)

PEACE

Not the increased child tax credit that McCain supports. That goes directly into your wallet, to buy your child caviar for 3 meals per day.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:33 AM on 10/04/2008

You can't feed a child with $5,000 per year?

What are you feeding them? Caviar 3 meals per day?

No, she just has to PUT GAS in her tank every now and then.

BTW, just what are you "mourning" anyway? McCain's chances at the presidency, perhaps?

When would the $5,000.00 check get to my insurance company and would I have to come up with the difference? Who would be responsible to make sure it got there? There are too many chances for that to go wrong and fast.

How would I be guaranteed that now my employer wouldn't drop me totally ? How do you know that they would be inclined to now give me a raise? You said they would or could do that under McCains plan, when have you ever seen an employer offer an employee more money when they could just pocket more of a profit for themselves. Maybe they would get no additional incentives but, they would come out on top either way.

Funny how you picked one item off the list, when the WHOLE Iist is REALITY. Reading your posts since yesterday... I'm starting to believe you don't live in the real world. You seem to have that Rethug belief that corporations will always do what's best for the nation and ALL of it's people. This past month couldn't have proved your more wrong. Can I have some of what your smoking? That's some good stuff.

I do not who you are but you are definitely a dimwit. "Can't feed a child with $5000 per year" doesn't mean literally so. It goes for feeding, clothing, school supplies, extra curricular activities, uniforms and shoes to participate in sports activities, field trips and so on and so forth. And your question "Caviar 3 meals per day"? shows how ignorant you are. Definitely must be a republican.

She better be looking for work because it appears that not only isn't troopergate going away, but that obstruction of justice AND witness tampering charges are being considered, too.

Palin isn't likely to finish her term without facing impeachment charges. And after shining the national spotlight on Alaska's welfare state status, that they pay $1 federal income tax for every $1.84 they receive, that they have no state income or sales tax, and that every man, woman and child receives an annual rebate check from the state, this year it was $3,200 each, in addition to their hundreds of millions in earmarks/pork annually, it's unlikely that her state will appreciate that the rest of Americans are no longer willing to subsidize their finances.

And the First Dud may wind up doin' some time for ignorin' legal supoenas.

PEACE

Vontrapp: Palin Annoyed Me

Vontrapp says he was annoyed by Palin's repeated attempts to dodge fair questions, then make lame excuses and blame the interviewer afterwards for her own personal failure.

Vontrapp thinks Palin is all too typical of crybaby conservatives, trying to convince others they are victims of a non-existant media bias. Vontrapp thinks conservatives are the ones who really profit from pretending to be victims when they are not, and are blatant hypocrits on top of being thin-skinned babies.

End of story.

They need to go on the offensive with a lot more than the health care plan, when you've got an opposition that's portraying you as a loser, a traitor, and a surrender monkey. And they still get away with that "most liberal" moniker, even though the dems put Biden up there to bite the bullet with the gay marriage argument. Hint to Biden: It doesn't matter how many times you say you're not for gay marrige, they'll still saddle you with it, so you might as well NOT SELL OUT.

Watching Biden's facial expressions, it took him about 3 quarters of the way through the debate to figure out that this lying hag Palin was insulting him and us, in between the smiles and winks. Put your d*ck in your pants and treat her like a politician.

Think about the Quale VP debate. Now think about the Palin VP debate. Very similar candidates, but the debates were nothing alike, were they. Gee, wonder why.

I scoured Article 1 of the Constitution for the role of the executive branch, but that all seemed to be in Article 2...

Perhaps Biden has a bootlegged copy from China.

Try scouring a little harder. Took me about 30 seconds to find it.

Sarah Palin last night conjured up shades of Stuart Smalley. Remember the Stuart Smalley skits from SNL?

"I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me..."

Well, maybe not smart enough...

I can not see that woman as VP, what in the world is happening with this country. Everyone seems to be in a trance of Sarah Palin. The ones voting for her can not see that she is NOT qualified to become a VP, she is another George Bush brain. The smiling and winking is not going to win people over, what is going on here. What is happening to everyone, she is leading you into a trance.

THIS IS SCARY!!!! and DANGEROUS!!

But I was very disappointed in that they took out the Bikini parade part, what happened to that part?
