Taxes

In typical news-dump fashion, the McCain campaign put out the last two years of Sarah Palin's tax returns late Friday afternoon.

The information contained a few interesting revelations in what was, otherwise, a fairly mundane filing. Palin, it appears, did not pay taxes on the more than $60,000 of travel reimbursements that she and her family members reportedly billed the state during her 18 months as governor. There is a fairly wonky debate over whether she should have been charged for these trips or whether it was accounted for in her salary. John Bogdanski, a tax professor at the Lewis and Clark Law School, told the Huffington Post's Seth Colter Walls that they did qualify as taxable income.

It does not appear that such deductions would have been allowable for any amounts attributable to travel by her husband and children. Section 274(m)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code strictly forbids deductions for bringing spouses and dependents along on business travel unless the spouses and dependents (a) are employees of the taxpayer (here, the taxpayer is the governor), (b) are traveling for a bona fide business purpose, and (c) would otherwise be entitled to deduct the travel on their own tax returns. Unless Palin's spouse and kids are also her employees and she can show that they were away on their own businesses, their expenses would not be deductible by the governor. And therefore she cannot exclude from income any per diems attributable to any of them. (By the way, since she's the employee, the income would be required to be reported on her own return, not her kids'.)

Overall, the Palins reported a gross income of $127,869 in 2006, and paid taxes amounting to $11,944 (an effective rate of 9.3 percent). In 2007, the family reported earning a gross income of $166,080 ($107,987.00 of which came from Gov. Palin) and paid taxes totaling $24,738, for a rate of 14.9 percent.

But there is some discrepancy with the latter number. According to an accompanying 2007 personal financial disclosure report, Palin's "income" as governor of Alaska was $196,531.50, well above the $107,987.00 that was noted on her W2 form from that same year. An email was sent to the McCain campaign for clarification. And this story will be updated should aides reply.

Palin's personal financial disclosure form also showed a moderate amount of assets. The family has ownership or interest in several properties, including tracts on several Alaska fishing spots. And Todd made between $50,000 and $100,000 from British Petroleum's retirement plan.

Why only two years of tax returns? I want to see their returns when they were "businesses". You want honest in your officials, that is where you will see it, it leaps off the pages (and visa versa)!!!! If they were great business folks, let's see it. Let's see where all that administrative talent came from. Let's see how she ran her business.

Where is the outcry for the full disclosure. What is good for the goose is not for the gander.

Has anyone noticed that the Palins paid their 2006 taxes with check number 7083 in April 2007, and their 2007 taxes with check number 6896. It appears to be the same Wells Fargo account.

Well, no one is challenging these returns. Do you think she will get by without answering questions regarding these forms before the election date?
Who is the world will call her out on it.
Do you think people are going over them carefully now?

Since they filed jointly; Ms Palin loses the argument that Juneau is her "tax home". Todd claimed business deductions for the Wasilla home thus solidifying the argument that Wasilla is in fact their tax home. You can't have it both ways. Good try- if the vp gig doesn't work out the Palin's could start a new business venture as tax (evader) advisors.

I don't quite understand what the knock is on H&R Block other than one can find someone a little more personal and attentive.

Sarah and Todd provided H&R Block with the necessary information, obviously didn't tell them about the income they received (travel expense reimbursement for family members and per diem) as separate checks and not withheld on her W-2.

When they signed the tax return, they take responsibility for the contents, not H&R Block, unless Block did something incompetent - like Palins gave them the check stubs for the per diems, etc., and Block neglected to list them.

I see tax cheating at work here - not H&R Block incompetence. I hope Block sues the Palins and the McCain campaign bigtime after they inevitably point the finger at them as "response."

Is there a link to the actual returns? I'd like to see them if they are out there.

SARAH PALIN & HER RADICAL HOMEGROWN TERR.ORIST PALS

Sarah Palin and her husband Todd are both members of the Alaskan Independence Party (AIP) and as such are RADICAL SEPARATISTS bent on VIOLENTLY SECEDING from the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA !

Lynette Clark, the chairman of the Alaskan Independence Party (AIP), confirmed to ABC News that Mrs Palin and her husband Todd had both been both members and attended at least one party convention. Its motto, "Alaska First", contrasts sharply with the John McCain campaign slogan: "Country First."

It seeks "the complete repatriation of the public lands, held by the federal government, to the state and people of Alaska" and aims to be "self-sufficient" by using profits from Alaskan oil and gas resources. It claims that the vote held in 1958 which led to Alaska becoming the 49th state of the US was corrupt and did not offer a proper choice.

In a video recorded at this year's party convention, Dexter Clark, the party's vice chairman, can be seen telling delegates: "The situation is completely out of hand, the decay of the federal government is totally complete." "IN ORDER TO PROPAGATE AIP POLICY YOU "SHOULD INFILTRATE" MAINSTREAM PARTIES. "Whichever party in that area [in which] you can get something done, get into that political party", he says. ----Jon Swaine, UK Telegraph, 10 Sep 2008--

I am puzzled over several things. First of all, what is the governor of the state doing having her taxes prepared by H&R Block? There are so many strange things about the 2006 and 2007 returns I hardly know where to start.

Charitable donations: You don't say "various" and then put a big round amount of $2500 without saying where the money went. Even if it wasn't a guess, it sure as hell looks like it.

Mileage deductions: Don't tell me that the vehicle was driven exactly 2000 miles because I'm not going to believe it. Someone was doing big round guesses here.

Per Diems? Obviously, the per diem amounts were paid in a separate check, not included in the W-2. Did she think nobody would ever know? It would have been better to claim all the deductions allowable, and then show the per diem received...there might possibly have been a tidy sum left, which could have ended up on Schedule A. Even if it wasn't useful, it would have kept her out of trouble. now look.

Sarah doesn't seem to be very knowledgeable about such things, but she sure shouldn't be going to H&R Block. Are there no CPA's in Alaska? I don't think she should be dealing with Joe Sixpack here.

Don't most Joe Sixpacks become H&R Blockheads just to get the usurious refund loans?

By the TIME THIS ELECTION IS OVER SHE WILL BE WISHING SHE NEVER TRIED!

What exactly does Todd Palin due for that nice W-2 from BP? Does he run a well crew? Perhaps, he is a "roughneck", like Bruce Willis in the Asteroid movie? Or, maybe, just maybe, he learned from Rick Davis to be an "access" guy (easy money!) All he has to do is whisper in the Governor's ear and she lays in her tanning bed, "Oil Good; Caribou Bad"!

I would like to know- 1: When did he start working for these people, 2: What time does he spend working for them around his boat rental and snowmobiling businesses, 3: What is his title and name 3 people he works with who can vouch for his presence (I would only believe Union workers), and 4: Why hasn't he been at work for the last 5 weeks, and who approved his leave of absence (maybe he still is on the clock- and billing double for Palin/McCain- duo access!)

Just wondering.

I cannot imgine that the Palin's tax returns will NOT be targeted next week. I mean, for chrissakes, H&R Block? The killer is the fact that THEY released the returns a bad as they are.
Is McCain that stupid not to have one of his tax attorneys review these POS returns?
Lets see, her W-2 received as the governor of Alaska is not reflected in the return, can anybody explain that ommision? Geez, the H&R Block reputation is in the toilet now The republicans will do every thing in their power to win this race. If they don't, I used to think her political career is all that would suffer, but now I think Alaskans are going to impeach her, and there is probably a tax scandal ready to be out into the oven. SWEET!!

Biden release his as well... where's your unbiase 'news' report on him? JUST SAY IT... "WE ARE A PROPOGANDA ARM FOR MARXIST SOCIALIST COMMUNIST THOUGHT."

Now that we both have the facts out in the open, pray tell (well, I can't pray here I know...). Ok, just tell... then, What is a liberal?

I really want to know. I understand part of it; A) homosexuals are good and right, B) the rich (who are the rich anyway?) are to be hated, and liberals will determine 'who' is rich. C) corporations are evil, though many Democrats are at the top of the heap.

Liberals are D) saving the earth, no one else can do it. E) God must be eliminated from every aspect of American and planet Earth life. You can think about God, but you must not talk about God or express your beliefs to anyone. F) Anything liberals say is 'good', is good. G) Anyone who disagrees with liberals is 'bad' and must be silenced by character assassination (i.e. either straight lies or exagerations of the truth). H) Anyone who does not support law-breaking illegal immagration is a 'racist'.

In all seriousness, did I miss anything else?

I'm a liberal, but I don't fit any of your categories A-H. There are millions like me too. Maybe you are misinformed, or have a distorted view, because you don't know liberals at all.

You have been badly brainwashed by Rush, Hannity, Savage and all the rest my friend! Why dont you stick around and let us help undo that?

(BTW! In the cosmic scheme of things, your hatred of gays and lesbians has all but guaranteed one of your sons or daughters will be one! Good luck with your lessons!)

According to http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1846372,00.html

The Palins' total income last year was split almost evenly between Sarah Palin's white-collar job and her husband's blue-collar work. Sarah Palin's salary as governor was $125,000; Todd Palin took in $46,790 as a part-time oil production operator for BP Alaska in Prudhoe Bay, plus $46,265 in commercial fishing income and $10,500 in Iron Dog snowmachine race winnings. These figures do not include nearly $17,000 in per diem payments Palin received for 312 nights spent in her own home since she was elected governor; she also has received $43,490 to cover travel costs for her husband and children.

In addition, each member of the Palin family received $1,654 in state oil royalties paid to all Alaskans.

According to my calculations that is a grand total of $300,623 annual income for this family. Pretty cushy. But sorry, Sarah, you are not, as you have asserted repeatedly, typical American Middle Class as most families have to get by on about one-fifth of what you do!
