Taxes

In typical news-dump fashion, the McCain campaign put out the last two years of Sarah Palin's tax returns late Friday afternoon.

The information contained a few interesting revelations in what was, otherwise, a fairly mundane filing. Palin, it appears, did not pay taxes on the more than $60,000 of travel reimbursements that she and her family members reportedly billed the state during her 18 months as governor. There is a fairly wonky debate over whether she should have been charged for these trips or whether it was accounted for in her salary. John Bogdanski, a tax professor at the Lewis and Clark Law School, told the Huffington Post's Seth Colter Walls that they did qualify as taxable income.

It does not appear that such deductions would have been allowable for any amounts attributable to travel by her husband and children. Section 274(m)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code strictly forbids deductions for bringing spouses and dependents along on business travel unless the spouses and dependents (a) are employees of the taxpayer (here, the taxpayer is the governor), (b) are traveling for a bona fide business purpose, and (c) would otherwise be entitled to deduct the travel on their own tax returns. Unless Palin's spouse and kids are also her employees and she can show that they were away on their own businesses, their expenses would not be deductible by the governor. And therefore she cannot exclude from income any per diems attributable to any of them. (By the way, since she's the employee, the income would be required to be reported on her own return, not her kids'.)

Overall, the Palins reported a gross income of $127,869 in 2006, and paid taxes amounting to $11,944 (an effective rate of 9.3 percent). In 2007, the family reported earning a gross income of $166,080 ($107,987.00 of which came from Gov. Palin) and paid taxes totaling $24,738, for a rate of 14.9 percent.

But there is some discrepancy with the latter number. According to an accompanying 2007 personal financial disclosure report, Palin's "income" as governor of Alaska was $196,531.50, well above the $107,987.00 that was noted on her W2 form from that same year. An email was sent to the McCain campaign for clarification. And this story will be updated should aides reply.

Palin's personal financial disclosure form also showed a moderate amount of assets. The family has ownership or interest in several properties, including tracts on several Alaska fishing spots. And Todd made between $50,000 and $100,000 from British Petroleum's retirement plan.

WTF!? Did Alaska forget to pay her 88K and Palin never thought to ask for it, or is someone hiding a few untaxed dollars somewhere?
This looks huge to me.

shoot, that descrepancy in her salary is in many cases more than a family-of-four yearly income.

In some physically-demanding service careers -- military, fire, police -- you can retire and draw a pension after 20 years. So you have people retiring from that in their early 40's.

Oil-field work might be similar. If in fact he worked on the rigs or in the fields...

This news should be front page on Huff Po Monday morning. It won't make it to page one anywhere else unless a newspaper editor decides to put it there.

Don't worry about her. When she becomes presid...umm, I mean VP, that pesky IRS problem will go away. You don't really think these insiders have to follow the rules that we do, do you?

I feel so lucky to be alive to see this election cycle, and also lucky that it brought me here to HuffPo. I have been reading comments for quite awhile...my first post. I just had to say how inspiring (because it's true) the AFL-CIO video is. There is a righteous tone (dignity and indignation) versus the shrill one we have been hearing this past month.

.Rich Trumka is one of my heroes. Cleaned up the UMW and now is in leadership for the AFL-CIO. Great speech. Should be played in all the so-called "rust-belt" states.

They say the devil is in the details. Take a look at the checks., they're out of sequence. One is check # 7083 dated 4/6/2007 and the other is check # 6896 dated 4/11/2008. interesting!!!

Sarah Palin's half million dollar house was built with contractor friends. Could these possibly be the same type of contractors who did home renovations for Sen. Ted. Stevens. This seems rather fishy. The house is one of the newer homes in Wasilla, and was possibly built after she was elected governor. Is it not possible that contractors were doing her favors in return for help from the governor's office. Is anyone investigating this?

According to the Bennington Banner, "

"The Palins' four-bedroom, four-bath house, nearly 3,500 square feet, sits on just over two acres behind a tall wood-plank privacy fence that runs along one side of the property. It's one of the newest homes in the Snider subdivision lining Lake Lucille and is assessed at $552,000 — more than twice the value of a neighboring two-acre lot with a much smaller, older wood-frame home.

Todd Palin built the house with friends who were contractors, he said in a recent television interview."

Seems to me that we should be allowed to see the last TEN YEARS of the Palins' tax forms - all of them - presumably filed before she was tapped as nominee for V.P. candidate............not those put together and filed by the McCain campaign

There is a mistake on 2006 tax return that did not have any impact. If you look at page 3, you'd would see $630 for non-cash contributions. At the same time, on page 18, the total non-cash contributions amount to $1230. Also FMV exceeds the donor's cost.

Remember that keynote speech in 2004. We have come full circle. See this other speech by a union man from West Virginia. See why he says it's time to live up to the promise of our country.

Thats not just a "union man". Thats Rich Trumka, formerly head of the Mine Workes (reformed it) now in leadership of the AFL-CIO. And he's from Pennsylvania. A Penn State grad with a Villanova law degree. He's a real comer in the labor movement. And that was a great speech.

I know AtticusinPA, I just wanted to keep it simple, and get the message out to the common man. It does not matter who says this. Yes, Richard is a third generation Mine Worker, but no matter the man, the weight of his words is great.

Thanks my friend.

Palin's (actually the RNC) tax attorney has released this opinion that she can rely on the W-2 she received. The opinion sidesteps the question of whether the per diem is actually taxable and avoids the family travel issue completely.

The I.R.S. that threatened to take away the tax exempt status of a church whose pastor spoke out against the war, but has never bothered the Dobsons and Falwells and Robertsons and their "churches," will not bother the Palins over this.

The bad people are all on the same team.
