Taxes

In typical news-dump fashion, the McCain campaign put out the last two years of Sarah Palin's tax returns late Friday afternoon.

The information contained a few interesting revelations in what was, otherwise, a fairly mundane filing. Palin, it appears, did not pay taxes on the more than $60,000 of travel reimbursements that she and her family members reportedly billed the state during her 18 months as governor. There is a fairly wonky debate over whether she should have been charged for these trips or whether it was accounted for in her salary. John Bogdanski, a tax professor at the Lewis and Clark Law School, told the Huffington Post's Seth Colter Walls that they did qualify as taxable income.

It does not appear that such deductions would have been allowable for any amounts attributable to travel by her husband and children. Section 274(m)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code strictly forbids deductions for bringing spouses and dependents along on business travel unless the spouses and dependents (a) are employees of the taxpayer (here, the taxpayer is the governor), (b) are traveling for a bona fide business purpose, and (c) would otherwise be entitled to deduct the travel on their own tax returns. Unless Palin's spouse and kids are also her employees and she can show that they were away on their own businesses, their expenses would not be deductible by the governor. And therefore she cannot exclude from income any per diems attributable to any of them. (By the way, since she's the employee, the income would be required to be reported on her own return, not her kids'.)

Overall, the Palins reported a gross income of $127,869 in 2006, and paid taxes amounting to $11,944 (an effective rate of 9.3 percent). In 2007, the family reported earning a gross income of $166,080 ($107,987.00 of which came from Gov. Palin) and paid taxes totaling $24,738, for a rate of 14.9 percent.

But there is some discrepancy with the latter number. According to an accompanying 2007 personal financial disclosure report, Palin's "income" as governor of Alaska was $196,531.50, well above the $107,987.00 that was noted on her W2 form from that same year. An email was sent to the McCain campaign for clarification. And this story will be updated should aides reply.

Palin's personal financial disclosure form also showed a moderate amount of assets. The family has ownership or interest in several properties, including tracts on several Alaska fishing spots. And Todd made between $50,000 and $100,000 from British Petroleum's retirement plan.

Two questions:

1. How does Todd (at 45) get such a huge "retirement pension" from British Petroleum? and

2. Why does she pay so little income tax on $200,000 (declared) income?

I predict there will be a lot more said about this in the coming weeks--this doesn't add up.

It's called depreciation and business expenses. Todd writes off their plane, home for office, cell phone and 4 vehicles as business expenses. His expenses exceeded his income on one of his hobbies, I mean businesses. LOL- is this the business Palin referred to in her debate? They take 100% write offs for part-tme businesses and hobbies.

Palin's spokeswoman, Maria Comella, had this to say "Regarding the per diem dispute, Comella said Juneau is the governor's home base and therefore whenever she works elsewhere, she is entitled to charge the state. Comella contended the per diem payments are not taxable."

I hate to break it to Comella and Palin, but just because the state of Alaska doesn't consider per diem payments taxable, does NOT mean that the federal government does not. I wonder if they realize the difference between state income taxes and federal income taxes. Apparently they do not. It sounds like a pretty STUPID argument that Comella is trying to make. Especially for an "upstanding" "law-abiding" citizen, like Sarah Palin...........UGH!!!!!!! I WANT TO PUKE AFTER MAKING THAT STATEMENT!

Juneau is the Governor's home base, but Sarah has chosen Wasilla as her home base. She was not required to travel to Anchorage/Wasilla by job duties. She just doesn't like Juneau so she chose not to work there. Why do you think legislators in Alaska's capital wore "Where's Sarah" buttons during the legisative session. And why do you think Todd Palin lobbied the Speaker of the House to support a capital move. The other thing Sarah has done is to move more of her personal staff and department heads to Anchorage, making it in her mind the de facto capital. Frank Bailey's position used to be housed in Juneau

So, back to the point, if Anchorage/Wasilla was her home base, then Juneau was where she was required to work "elsewhere" and since the 6-bedroom/10-bathroom official Governor's residence is there, she would not need per diem. Yes, her family's travel and per diem for Wasilla should be taxed.

And sorry, I forget when capitol is with an o or a (capital).

oh and IMHO, if you are 44 and you get 50-100k out of your "retirement" plan, then this is no retirement plan, this is a bribe!

how many "hockey moms" own a couple of properties, fully or partially? She represents as much of the average Alaskan as JMC represents the average Arizonian !
It is not stunning how much of a real bad republican she is - after all she attended workshops and has been openly voicing that she would continue BUSH policy to an even more extreme height.

It is stunning that so many "non real republicans" with at least some brain are still undecided or even considering voting for this ticket! I guess we may just overestimate the intelligence of the average American. Giving them credit where no credit is due.

Check out Laton McCartney’s "The Teapot Dome Scandal: How Big Oil Bought the Harding White House and Tried to Steal the Country." Lots of info on how the oil companies took over our country.

Here's a short review: http://scriblerianne.wordpress.com/tag/teapot-dome/

Better yet, read "The History of the Standard Oil Company" by Ida Tarbell. It was witten in 1919, but that book is still in print (I sold a first edition sold by Tarbell for $900).

You could read it today and you would think it was about any of the major oil companies today.

If you've got four+ kids, itemize, have a house payment, and have a fairly decent amount of charitable contributions, an effective rate of 9.3% isn't necessarily out of the ordinary. You really need to see the details of their return to see what they got breaks on to determine how far out of whack it may or may not be.

You're kidding, I hope. The per diem is the least of her problems. It is possible that the per diem for her specifically is actually taxable, but she has a whole lot of other problems that are much larger.

HuffPo writes funny headlines. Last night, it was "the general's name", which was really small potatoes compared to her complete cluelessness regarding Afghanistan.

Obviously this news came out after Letterman was taped. His next guest, Brian Williams, who of course is neutral, went so far as to say that during his standup, Letterman used her as a "pinata".

So, in addition to her abuse of power, she now has tax evasion issues?

Perfect. Just effn perfect.

She is a total piece of CRAP.

Thanks, McCain campaign for vetting her so well. This has made it so much easier for the real "maverick" to take office in January!

"And Todd made between $50,000 and $100,000 from British Petroleum's retirement plan."

Uhhhh, how old is this guy and how can much BP stock does he own to be making that much dough on a retirement plant. The rest of our 401Ks and self investment retirement plans are tanking and this guy makes $100K a year profit! Something is fishy here and most likely a huge conflict of interest since he's married to the Gov of this "energy" state. But since her hero is no-ethics Dick Cheney who never met a law he liked or obeyed, what does she care about ethics?

That's the part that caught my eye the most. I come from a Steelworkers Union family and nobody in my family has anything near that kind of retirement plan.

Exactly! 45 years old....Retire? about 14.5 years, till 59 1/2. Half retirement or less at his age. Union Steel Worker? My husband worked up there 25 years, a Union IBEW, at 50 retirement looks like 15,000.00 a year. Smells fishy. And he never heard of the Steel Workers Union up there, and he worked every big job in Alaska. Something is not right.

It is the value of his 401(k) not the annual income he gets. You need to learn how to read these disclosures. You are mixing income and assets.

Well I guess the republicans have been successful in distracting attention away from the investigation against Palin for abuse of power.
