Debate

Pollster.com:

CNN and CBS, the two networks that released surveys immediately after the presidential debate last week, have done the same for the Vice Presidential debate. Presumably, the methodologies are comparable to those used on Friday. Their online reports are not yet online, but by the magic of TiVo, I managed to get the results off the air.

...

So two surveys say viewers thought Biden won, although neither broadcast indicated how partisans or independents within their samples reacted. We will have to wait for their online reports to learn more.

However, for now, consider this reality check from a debate held 20 years ago this week. Most of us remember the famous line delivered by Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Lloyd Bentsen to Republican VP nominee Dan Quayle on October 5, 1988: "Senator, You're No Jack Kennedy." ...

Dan Quayle may have lost the debate, but it mattered little to the decisions voters were making.

I think it just may matter in this election.

We got a real glimpse in how Palin likens herself to Dick Cheney. Sends shivers down my spine.

I think it matters because those who aren't already sold on Obama are now more likely to vote for him because of Joe.

LOL! Taking lessons from John McCain, I see.

Historically, you are quite right, but perhaps it might matter a bit this time. McCain is so very old that many voters do have to think about whether or not Palin is qualified; since she is a relative stranger with a short record, voters want to know who and what she is. Conservatives were thrilled that she didn't visibly boob up a lot (and she did, in fact, boob up), but undecideds didn't seem to have been impressed.

They have the voting machines, so yeah it doesn't matter.

I agree. This didn't change anything. It would have mattered if Palin had completely blown it, but she didn't. She didn't do well, but all she had to was survive. It would have mattered if Biden had made a tremendous gaffe, but he didn't. ( 'Bosniac' doesn't count). It was pretty obvious that Biden is extremely qualified and that Palin is not qualified at all. Her fans don't care. The voters are moving toward Obama. Nothing's different.

Are the Republicans trying to create three new words? What is newkular? Where is EyeRaq? Where is EyeRan? Have they been listening to Stevie Wonder or something?

One of the reasons, among many, that I'm so glad to be almost rid of W is his butchering of the English language. Please, let's have an articulate President again. He is the face of this country, and sorry, but I don't want Joe Sixpack to be the face of my country.

Got to agree and if I were a blue collar person (which I once was) I'd be da-mn insulted by the Joe Sixpack moniker too.

It shouldn't matter. There is only one question. Do you want Palin to be President?

How does our political system come up with candidates like GW Bush and Palin? Why are they promoted as leaders? Well for some promoters there's money to be had, trillions these past eight years. And for those out of the money, fears and prejudices are soothed. Gosh darn, I betcha there are better, more qualified people to lead this great nation.
And there they were in front of me, on PBS Bill Moyers Journal, Kathleen Hall Jamieson, Brooke Gladstone, and Emma Coleman Jordan, all intelligent, articulate, concerned, knowledgeable, and patriotic. But we'll never see them on a ballot. Joseph Stalin had it right, vote as often as you want, as long as I choose the candidates.
Golly gee, that's it. Republicans, Democrats, Independents, and others, don't let Joseph Stalin, Karl Rove or Rupert Murdoch pick our candidates. Get involved all you Joes and Janets, vote in primaries, throw out the garbage early before it stinks up the nation.

Golly gee what have you done to me, well I guess it doesn't matter anymore!

The old dog for the hard road as Biden displays his mettle!

Let's not get distracted folks, the message that needs to be hammered home is that McSame-Failin' represents MORE OF THE SAME.

McSame:
Picking Gov. Failin' shows that he's completely bought into the Rovian mantra of Politics First. Dare anybody who says otherwise to make a credible argument that Failin' is anywhere near the best qualified Republican to be VP.

Failin':
Abuse of power to settle personal scores, stonewalling attempts to investigate her actions, loyalty trumps competence and qualifications, using personal email accounts to avoid public disclosure laws, leaving the town she was mayor of saddled with millions in debt... remind you of anybody???

Bottom Line:
McSame-Failin' = MORE OF THE SAME

The problem is this debate should have some impact on the voter, that is if they really care about this country. I must admit some are voting party lines, some are voting gender, and some are voting along racial lines, and that is a horriffic though. This is about our future, this is about moving forward strongly into the 21 centruy.
I think about our candidates, granted anything can happen to any of them; yet there is one where the odds are completely against them, that being McCain. Will he survive his first term? Look at the outrageous level of stress the president goes through, look at the toal it takes mentally, emotionally, and physically. Ultimately it does impact on ones over all health.
With that said I fear for this country should McCain not beable to complete his first term. I implore you, I beg each and everyone of you to take a serious look at Palin. Does she truly have what it takes to lead this country? Or is she just one of the gals on the block, that popular every one wants to have a beer with? Do you want a high school debutant, a miss congeniality, or do you want a true leader that has the leadership abilities to take this country into the future. I hope you are truly honest with yourselves on this and vote Obama.

"It probably won't matter". What? Did you even bother to notice that the polls that were cited on this very same site's headlines were that Biden won among undecideds? This whole stretch of time is about getting THOSE people to make up their minds. All Palin did was not lose the people who want to vote for her because they relate with her...those people already made up their minds, and she didn't completely screw up and drive them all away. Would have been hard to do so, honestly, because those are people who don't understand or don't care about the issues. Those are the people who voted for Bush because they "thought he seemed nice". Those people are lost causes at this point. The people who really matter in regards to these debates are the ones who shut out all the babble until the last couple months then make up their minds at this point. For everyone else, it's just entertainment. Biden won among those people, and that's going to prove to those people that Obama has the judgment to hire good people.

What happened twenty years ago to Benson and Quayle has nothing in common with today.
Today the Republican party gave us a war and a three trillion dollar debt, maybe more. Factor that in to any story about Dan Quayle being a bellwhether of today.

I think for this election it will matter.. just because there has been so much in the media about Palin and people are interested in her... it's sickening, but true.. I can't stand her and can't believe people support her. I think she is showing more and more that she just won't do... and last night is a prime example.
