WASHINGTON — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday called Republican presidential candidate John McCain not a maverick but a "mimic" of President Bush.

Clinton made the remarks at a Human Rights Campaign dinner, where she was filling in for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's running mate, Joe Biden. Biden canceled his weekend campaign events because his wife's mother is ill. Clinton spoke by satellite from Los Angeles to a few thousand people who attended the national gay rights group event.

Clinton said Biden called and asked her to fill in for him because of the family emergency. Rather than sharing her thoughts, she said, "I want to share with you the eloquent remarks that Joe had prepared."

Clinton sought to tie McCain to Bush, saying the Arizona senator offered voters "more of the same."

"He's not a maverick. He's a mimic," she said.

She noted that McCain doesn't support extending job discrimination and hate-crimes laws to cover sexual orientation and supports the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Clinton and Obama were rivals in a turbulent Democratic primary season as they both fought for their party's presidential nomination. She had argued the Illinois senator lacked the experience to be president, a claim the McCain campaign highlighted in its response to her remarks at Saturday's dinner.

"Senator Clinton would be more believable if she'd mimic her own statements that Barack Obama is too inexperienced and lacks the key readiness to lead," said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds.

Clinton has since declared her support for Obama's candidacy, has urged her own backers to rally behind him and has been campaigning on his behalf in battleground states.

She said Saturday that Americans can choose in the November election whether the nation takes steps toward "securing equality and dignity for all Americans, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity."

"Or we can choose four more years of the same failed policies, four more years of the same small-minded governance, four more years that look just like the last eight," she added.

The Obama campaign has repeatedly tried to tie McCain to Bush in voters' minds, an approach GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin portrayed in a debate with Biden on Thursday as looking backward rather than forward.

Clinton's comments came as the McCain campaign stepped up attacks on Obama's character. Palin on Saturday accused Obama of "palling around with terrorists" because of an association with a former '60s radical. The Obama campaign called Palin's remarks offensive but unsurprising given news reports about the McCain campaign's come-from-behind game plan.

They are so mavericky. I hope they continue this maverick stuff ... nobody has any idea what it means or how it helps.

We can credit Sarah Palin with one thing:

Making us all that much more aware of the strength, intelligence and moral character of the women leaders in the Democratic party.

Why won't you and Todd Palin honor the subpoenas from Alaska Sarah? What are you hiding? Try telling the truth. " Bet cha you will feel better for it".

And as Ken Burns so rightfully states in the op-ed piece that PhilTListener links to above, if you have to refer to yourself as a maverick, it's pretty clear that you are not.

For my money, being a maverick is not an admirable quality for a leader. Personally, I prefer a leader who is visionary, something that McCain surely is not.

McCain’s insistence on identifying with the maverick persona seems to date him to an era that the nation is moving, or has moved beyond. The president he most admires is Teddy Roosevelt whose presidency occurred in the first decade of the 20th century.

Every time I hear McCain use the word maverick, I think only of the fifties television western starring James Garner. I think that show's theme song should be McCain’s campaign song (except for the tall, dark and smooth parts):

Who is the tall dark stranger there?
Maverick is the name.
Riding the trail to who knows where
Luck is his companion
Gamblin' is his game.

Smooth as a handle on a gun
Maverick is the name.
Wild as a wind in Oregon
Blowin' up a canyon
Easier to tame.

Riverboat ring your bell!
Fare-the-well Annabelle!
Luck is the lady that he loves the best!

================
McCain is caught in a time warp guided by unlearned lessons, over-arching ambition and the refrain of an old tired western reverberating in his brain.

Well put.

On the flip side "maverick" -to me -means wild and untrianable. Maybe a fitting description afterall.

All you have to do is look at McCains record with the FLDS polygamists in Colorado City, Arizona, and you will know what kind on man he is.

When Senator Linda Binder (Mohave County) asked for McCain's help to clean up the worst human rights violations in this country, McCain wouldn't even return her calls.

For 26 years McCain DID NOTHING.

Can anyone tell me why the MSM is echoing the IMPain comment about Ayers?

Should the Ob-am-a campaign bring up exPalin's husband's association with the separatist party in Alaska, or McCAinE's strong ties to Charles Keating

Or should the media do it's job and focus on the issues.

ENOUGH!!!

I write this as an African American woman who was hurt by the Clinton's racial politics and voted Obama in the primary - Hillary Clinton has proven to be a sincere and powerful advocate for Obama. It shows her character and dignity that she has done this. Sarah Palin is no Hillary Clinton, nobody is. She is one of a kind! I'm glad that I can go back to admiring her as a leader.

Its really understandable why Palin said during the debate "that's looking backwards" really she is asking everyone to 'look the other way' and pretend that McCain had nothing to do with the mess the country is in today.

Next she is going to ask us to believe in the tooth fairy. The wall street melt down is a direct result of Republican Reaganomics. Change is only a empty word to them. We can not afford another borrow and spend Republican. America is almost bankrupt because Republicans have had control of Washington for 12 of the last 14 years.

Lets not just look the other way because Republicans know if we voters look back and see how badly the Republicans have run the government, no one would ever vote for them again.
