WASHINGTON — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday called Republican presidential candidate John McCain not a maverick but a "mimic" of President Bush.

Clinton made the remarks at a Human Rights Campaign dinner, where she was filling in for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's running mate, Joe Biden. Biden canceled his weekend campaign events because his wife's mother is ill. Clinton spoke by satellite from Los Angeles to a few thousand people who attended the national gay rights group event.

Clinton said Biden called and asked her to fill in for him because of the family emergency. Rather than sharing her thoughts, she said, "I want to share with you the eloquent remarks that Joe had prepared."

Clinton sought to tie McCain to Bush, saying the Arizona senator offered voters "more of the same."

"He's not a maverick. He's a mimic," she said.

She noted that McCain doesn't support extending job discrimination and hate-crimes laws to cover sexual orientation and supports the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Clinton and Obama were rivals in a turbulent Democratic primary season as they both fought for their party's presidential nomination. She had argued the Illinois senator lacked the experience to be president, a claim the McCain campaign highlighted in its response to her remarks at Saturday's dinner.

"Senator Clinton would be more believable if she'd mimic her own statements that Barack Obama is too inexperienced and lacks the key readiness to lead," said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds.

Clinton has since declared her support for Obama's candidacy, has urged her own backers to rally behind him and has been campaigning on his behalf in battleground states.

She said Saturday that Americans can choose in the November election whether the nation takes steps toward "securing equality and dignity for all Americans, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity."

"Or we can choose four more years of the same failed policies, four more years of the same small-minded governance, four more years that look just like the last eight," she added.

The Obama campaign has repeatedly tried to tie McCain to Bush in voters' minds, an approach GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin portrayed in a debate with Biden on Thursday as looking backward rather than forward.

Clinton's comments came as the McCain campaign stepped up attacks on Obama's character. Palin on Saturday accused Obama of "palling around with terrorists" because of an association with a former '60s radical. The Obama campaign called Palin's remarks offensive but unsurprising given news reports about the McCain campaign's come-from-behind game plan.

When you look a Tucker "CSucker" Bounds you can see that McCain applies "don't ask....don't tell" to his own campaign as well.

I thought he already has laryngitis (the chronic type); he is consistently incoherent and he always looks like he is about to cry due to throat pain. He once burst into tears when Campbell looked at him.

He can still speak, so he doesn't have laryngitis.
He DOES suffer from severe diarrhea of the mouth, however.

We can see that Palin has fallen in step with Bush pertaining to his fearmongering. Just put the fear into the people and they will blindly believe everything told to them. Now it's the terrorists that are coming to get us (Obama). That sad thing is there are people out there that will use this as another excuse to justify voting for McCain. Why can't people see through this tactic?

I think that on every debate the candidates should be hooked up to a lie detector and that way we can see who is lying. If we did this, we wouldn't have all this mud slinging. Palinocchio's nose would be a mile long.

Funny you mentioned this. I just picked up a copy of the Rolling Stone today. This is REAL investigative journalism, not the corporate media spin we hear and read about McCain.
I thought Iknew alot about McCain's backstory. Whoa....I didn't know the half of it.
Chilling stuff.
This man CAN'T become president. NO WAY, NO HOW. I just donated another $100.00 to Obama's campaign and I'm volunteering like hell for the remainder of the campaign.

I was up until 3:30 am last night reading this article -- chilling is an excellent word for it. This man is on his own little Napoleon trip. A lot of things fall into place when you read this -- the fake smile, the boiling anger, his abject discourtesy toward Sen. Obama at the debate and on the Senate floor during the bailout bill vote.

Did you see the film from the Des Moines Register meeting? Boy, the man sure knows how to win friends and influence people. McCain has no business being near any lever of power anywhere.

Palin can accuse Senator Obama of "palling around with terrorists", as if he goes bar hopping with members of Al Queda. It's despicable. These are the same scare tactics that our country has lived with for over 7 years now. Keep the people afraid. It's easier to steamroll a cowering nation. And make no mistake about it. These loony right wingers are cowards.

Terrorists are everywhere. Under our beds. Hiding in our bushes. As if they are on the verge of destroying our country and taking it over. They hate our freedom. NO THEY DON'T. They hate us because we occupy their countries and are responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent people.

Instead of giving our brave troops a rest and bringing them home to honor their 7 long years of service, the right wing cowards, want to keep them in two quagmires. BRING OUR TROOPS HOME from Iraq AND Afghanistan NOW.

If those on the right are so patriotic and brave, then they should spit in the terrorists faces and tell them they can all go to hell. That our country is better then they are. That we won't stoop to the same mindless violence that they resort to. That if they do attack us again, we will find out who they are and go after them and kill them, but that we won't be drawn into another trap that Bin Laden laid so well, that W Bush fell for hook, line, and sinker.

You really need to get over your hostility to all things Hillary. You are being a total DRAG on the Obama campaign. If you cannot help but remain petty and picky, then GET LOST UNTIL AFTER THE ELECTION. LEAVE HILLARY ALONE! She is doing her part. NOW, FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE, DO YOURS!

Hillary, more so than any Democrat, is positioned to state the obvious, without being deemed sexist, and that is Sarah Palin is not qualified to be vice president. And you're right, I am profoundly angry at Hillary because she hurt Barack more than any right-winger ever could during the primary. And I've yet to see any public pronouncements by her that would prompt me to forgive her.

And as for me getting 'lost' until after the election, Radar, I thought we could engage in participatory discourse here. Can't we disagree on anything?

I stand by my last post. There's nothing I've heard Hillary say that my instincts indicate is genuine or sincere. She's going through the motions. And Palin, as the would-be standard-bearer of women's progress, is the perfect target for Hillary but she's still smarting over her loss and the shabby way some in the media treated her.

Hillary can't pick on Palin now because the msm will make
it a Catfight instead of about the issues. Palin is a small
fry not worthy of paying attention too, we have to beat the
head of the ticket chicken johnnybush. Tie those two together
always.

Just can't believe that if some people had to choose between being homeless and jobless over voting for a black man, they would choose being homeless and jobless. There are no bounds to ignorance and hatred.
