WASHINGTON — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday called Republican presidential candidate John McCain not a maverick but a "mimic" of President Bush.

Clinton made the remarks at a Human Rights Campaign dinner, where she was filling in for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's running mate, Joe Biden. Biden canceled his weekend campaign events because his wife's mother is ill. Clinton spoke by satellite from Los Angeles to a few thousand people who attended the national gay rights group event.

Clinton said Biden called and asked her to fill in for him because of the family emergency. Rather than sharing her thoughts, she said, "I want to share with you the eloquent remarks that Joe had prepared."

Clinton sought to tie McCain to Bush, saying the Arizona senator offered voters "more of the same."

"He's not a maverick. He's a mimic," she said.

She noted that McCain doesn't support extending job discrimination and hate-crimes laws to cover sexual orientation and supports the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Clinton and Obama were rivals in a turbulent Democratic primary season as they both fought for their party's presidential nomination. She had argued the Illinois senator lacked the experience to be president, a claim the McCain campaign highlighted in its response to her remarks at Saturday's dinner.

"Senator Clinton would be more believable if she'd mimic her own statements that Barack Obama is too inexperienced and lacks the key readiness to lead," said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds.

Clinton has since declared her support for Obama's candidacy, has urged her own backers to rally behind him and has been campaigning on his behalf in battleground states.

She said Saturday that Americans can choose in the November election whether the nation takes steps toward "securing equality and dignity for all Americans, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity."

"Or we can choose four more years of the same failed policies, four more years of the same small-minded governance, four more years that look just like the last eight," she added.

The Obama campaign has repeatedly tried to tie McCain to Bush in voters' minds, an approach GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin portrayed in a debate with Biden on Thursday as looking backward rather than forward.

Clinton's comments came as the McCain campaign stepped up attacks on Obama's character. Palin on Saturday accused Obama of "palling around with terrorists" because of an association with a former '60s radical. The Obama campaign called Palin's remarks offensive but unsurprising given news reports about the McCain campaign's come-from-behind game plan.

Way to say it Hillary!

Naturally Palin wants voters to not look back at the Bush-8, she doesn't want them to see they are the same. She hopes if we all have amnesia we might be willing to be sheeple and vote in 4 more of the same lying misery with Mimic McSame and his shill pal Palin.

Palin says not to look backward but Cheney's her favorite mentor idol.

The Clintons are huge assets in FL. Neither Gore nor Kerry used them and that's why FL is always so dicey. If we win FL, it's over.

Thanks Hillary! Obama is taking the high road and won't be dragged into gutter politics in the next 31 days. I bet he looks more and more presidential each day as the other ticket becomes more frantic and disrespectful.

That is one of the things I've liked about Obama from the beginning - he takes the high road. I'm so tired of all the yelling and name calling among grown people, I can't stand any more negative campaigning. I want Barack to defend himself, but keep his focus on the issues.

Now that she and Bill are done praising Palin and McCain, they see Obama can win regardless. And so now they want to join the party because the specter of being left out and seen as bitter spoilers is just too much. I know we need unity and all, but the lukewarm Obama support and praise of McCain needs to be addressed. BTW, didn't she or Bill just praise McCain for being a "maverick" after the RNC convention?

Are you a uniter or a divider? Hilary and Bill are on board. That's all that matters. Working together to get Obama elected and this country back on tack. Focus on the important stuff.

Where have you been? Sen.Hillary Clinton has been out there in battleground states . . and she is hitting McCain hard on all fronts. Pres. Clinton came to the campaign late, but has been doing an effective job for Sen. Obama. It would have been ugly of Pres. Clinton not to have said something nice about Sen. McCain since he was a guest at a gathering that Pres. Clinton was hosting.

I've been paying attention. And you're right, she has been out there. Just in between occasionally praising McCain and winking at her PUMAs. And as for Bill, you really can't defend that clown. Seriously.

In the words of soon-to-be president, Obama, ENOUGH!

Enough of the divisive politics. Both Clintons are out there campaigning their asses off now. Granted I have not always had positive things to say about them, but they are doing what they need to do to get Obama elected.

Enough of the division.

Yeah, that's cute. But it was lame the first time I heard it. Some of us live in reality and we see thru the motives of career politicians with bruised egos, trying desperately to save their image in a timely manner just in time to catch the spotlight. If they were doing what was needed to get Obama elected they would speak directly in to their former supporters like Richard Trumka http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/04/union-president-defends-o_n_131954.htmll) and address the obvious racism in their opposition. Because it sure as he!! ain't the 1.5% difference in policy between her and Obama.

McCain has nowhere to go now but down. He can run away from President Bush, but he can't run away from the Republican Party. The Republicans will be regarded from now on as "the party that wrecked America." Over the weeks ahead, as carnage in the economy and the financial markets ramps up, it will become increasingly clear. It is important that this meme be spread through the internet. I urge all commentators to adopt and spread the idea that the Republicans are "the party that wrecked America." It will work because it is the truth. Just spread the word.

And like Bush, McCain won't talk about the economy because the only thing he knows about is war.
