New York Times:

The turmoil on Wall Street and the weakening economy are changing the contours of the presidential campaign map, giving new force to Senator Barack Obama's ambitious strategy to make incursions into Republican territory, while leading Senator John McCain to scale back his efforts to capture Democratic states.

Make-Believe Maverick

A closer look at the life and career of John McCain reveals a dis-turbing record of reck-lessness and dis-honesty

Excerpt:

McCAIN FIRST

This is the story of the real John McCain, the one who has been hi-ding in plain sight. It is the story of a man who has consistently put his own advancement above all else, a man willing to say and do anything to achieve his ult-imate am-bition: to become commander in chief, ascending to the one position that would finally enable him to outrank his four-star father and grandfather.

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/make_believe_maverick_the_real_john_mccain/page/1

A reck-less, dis-honest gam-bler in the WH, run-ning down the economy and fumb-ling with one self-indu-ced international cri-sis after the other, someone who is haun-ted by a se-vere case of PTSD sitting IN COMMAND OF the proverbial RED BUTTON?

H.E.L.L, NO!

Another thing ...

I can't wait for the McCain camp to go the low road and get real nasty with their advertising!

It opens the door to Obama's 527's to attack McCain over accepting bribes in the Keating scam and even better ...

His dumping his crippled wife for a rich woman!

Most Americans still don't realize just how cold that man is ...

Amazingly, the McCain camp has publicly stated they are now going after Obama's CHARACTER! I say, once McCain opens the door to THAT subject, Obama needs to go after him BIG!

What 0bama needs to do is to stick to his winning agenda, and point out that McCain has nothing to offer people during an economic crisis except lies and smear. He needs to point out that McCain can't handle crisis situations and shows poor judgment in critical situations.

On the other hand, we should fight back those smears with the TRUTH about McCain and his corrupt associations.

So, when a house is on fire and the people inside are screaming for help, they are given two choices, pick the guy who's holding a hose or the guy who's holding a flame thrower.

Hmm...wonder who they'll pick?

*** An important point was raised this morning on This Week. ***

While all the McCain supporters agree that if the election were held today Obama would win in a landslide they say the fact is … it is not today and McCain can still turn things around.

Except for early voting has started or will start shortly in all 50 states and up to 33% of votes cast in this election will be cast early.

Just another nail in the McCain campaign.

Oh how pathetic can an old, little man get? He has nothing left to offer Americans. He can't handle the economy. The future is hinging on the economy, and he is cornered. He was hoping to run on Iraaaaaaq! Unfortunately for him, REALITY, remember that mcg00?, reality is setting the agenda and he just can't handle the economy. He behaved erratically when the economic crisis took centre stage. He lost his marbles completely for two weeks. He showed poor judgment in a crisis. He demonstrated he just can't handle a crisis. Maybe he should retire.

McCain is finished! He is toast! Most importantly, he knows it, and he's reacting erractically ag-ain!

Guilt by Association -

One can make the case that people like Jack Abramoff, Charles Keating, G. Gordon LIddy and Rev. Hagee associated with McCaln has as much stickiness as anything flung at 0bama. Personally, I think there is only one association of McCaln's that matters -

George W. Bush.

What's remarkable is that as a result of conduct in this campaign, you can be absolutely sure that whoever the Republicans put up as their nominee in 2012 will forget about any other association, and just try to sell to people that they've never met John McCain.

Or maybe the Palins' group AIP will

Vogler is the head of the Alaskan Independence Party. This is a quote from him.
"The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government," Vogler said in the interview, in which he talked extensively about his desire for Alaskan secession, the key goal of the AIP.

Todd Palin, VP nominee Sarah Palin's husband, was a member of this radical group from Oct. 1995 through July 2002. 7 years! Sarah Palin herself has courted this fringe group.

Guilt by Association doesn't end with McCain, borderorder...

It goes to the entire Republican Party for not putting the country first, two to three years ago, when clearly what I call the "Barry Goldwater option" should have been invoked.

To briefly recap what Barry Goldwater did, he cut a deal to get Agnew to resign and Nixon brought in Gerald Ford as VP. Then Nixon resigned, and Ford brought in Dole as VP. Problem gone.

Mitch McConnell was too weak of a leader back then, as he is now. By not moving to remove Bush/Cheney when he and the Republicans had the chance, they now become guilty by association.

Any campaign who has PTSD, Rick Davis, Liddy, Witch-doctors, the notion that the Earth was shared 5000 years ago between humans and dinosaurs, a record that matches that of the worst President in the history of the nation, belittling of the Consititution, Keating Five, Troopergate, Abuse of Power, Tax evasion, support of an unwarranted war that has cost 4000 US and 165,000 Iraqi civilian lives...

...and they want to go negative?

Really?

They REALLY want to go there?

I doubt it. Axe lrod is an absolute genius. I think he'll stay on the high road, and allow the media and supporters to match McCain's subterrainian road at every turn.

There will be leaks (ie: witchdoctor, Keating, etc) that will be picked up, becoming the narrative every time McCain and his 527's tries to go negative with something else.

The "guilt by association" attacks were tried and they failed. Is the McCain campaign incapable of learning any lessons from history?

None. He'll be incredible.

Recall that the only reason McCain wanted town halls is because the venue allows for dishonesty.

A questioner gets a mic asks the questions, then the mic is taken away. No room for rebuttal, challenge, disagreement, or follow-ups. It's perfect for a li ar, as they can give canned responses from the talking points playbook, and not be corrected there and then.

It's precisely the same reason that the G O P demanded the debate rules as they did for the VP debate.

WASHINGTON - By claiming that Democrat Barack Obama is "palling around with terrorists" and doesn't see the U.S. like other Americans, vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin targeted key goals for a faltering campaign.

And though she may have scored a political hit each time, her attack was unsubstantiated and carried a racially tinged subtext that John McCain himself may come to regret.
