Washington Post:

Almost a million more people participated in the federal government's food stamp program for the needy between April and July, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the program.

The latest federal statistics indicate that nationally, participation in the low-income nutrition supplement program rose from 28.08 million in April to 29.05 million in July, the last month for which the figures are available, a department spokeswoman said.

This can't and won't last too much longer. Disaster Capitalism demands cheap labor (hence the WTO and NAFTA). You will soon find it very tricky avoiding prison, where you'll work for free. The FBI has now got pharaoh like powers, there's a high resolution spy satellite pointed at us, and a Standing Army is now on American soil (to protect "us" from public discourse). The Russians are sneering. The Chinese have a sublime smile. And I don't blame them one bit. Thank you, Neocons, you will go down in TRUE history as more criminal than the National Socialist Party. It won't be recorded as such, naturally, because history is written by the conquerers.

Kennedy launched his brilliant attack using the Constitution, which states "Congress shall have the Power to Coin Money and Regulate the Value." Kennedy stopped the Federal Reserve banking system from printing money and lending it to the government at interest by signing Executive Order 11,110 on June 4, 1963. The order called for the issuance of $4,292,893,815 (4.3 trillion) in United States Notes through the U.S. treasury rather than the Federal Reserve banking system. He also signed a bill backing the one and two-dollar bills with gold which added strength to the new government issued currency. Kennedy's comptroller James J. Saxon, encouraged broader investment and lending powers for banks that were not part of the Federal Reserve system. He also encouraged these non-Fed banks to deal directly with and underwrite state and local financial institutions. By taking the capital investments away from the Federal Reserve banks, Kennedy would break them up and destroy them.

Many individuals in the U.S. government were CFR members, an organization that was openly pushing the Vietnam War, and these same people had close ties to the privately owned Federal Reserve banking system, a chief financial promoter and profiteer of war. Kennedy intended to stop the Vietnam War and all future wars waged for profit by America. He intended to regain control of the American people's government and their country by cutting off the military industrial complex and Federal Reserve banking system's money supply.

Welcome to the Machine. All resistance is futile. Go to Walmart and buy stuff. Watch mindless dance shows. Drink yourself into someone richer and prettier than you are now. Accept that your Representatives will never again listen to you. Admire CEO's that now have the power of Pharaohs. You are now a good American. To hear this menu again, please dial 5...

I am curious as to your Wal-Mart comment. Are you against buying anything there, even if it is clearly an American-made product?

Cities across the nation are imposing harsh penalties on the homeless.

According to AARP Bulletin:

"In Santa Cruz, CA, a BLANKET BAN punishable by fines makes it unlawful for people living outside to cover themselves with a blanket from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. Sleeping in cars is illegal during those hours. So is lingering in covered parking lots, where many people seek shelter in bad weather."

"Almost every city in the United States has tried to make it illegal to be homeless. Mayors and legislators think you can legislate homelessness out of existence."

So if we become homeless we need to be very afraid, not just of muggers but of bureaucrats who will be only too willing to kick us while we're down.

According to Henry Paulson there wasn't any money in the bailout for extending unemployment benefits but "we think food stamps has solved that problem."

Then he and Nancy Pelossi proceeded to laugh and make jokes for reporters.

Just another 'pesky socialist' program that republicans rail about. I've written on another thread about volunteering at a food pantry and being slightly amused at a couple of SUVs and pickups with that worn out 'W' sticker in the back window. How those people can go and vote republican this year shows the monumental delusions these people possess. Most came humbled and bewildered at how they got into this position. Most of these people lost white-collar jobs and are finding it hard to find decent paying jobs. These pantries aren't in inner-city communities. The one I volunteered in was in Flower Mound, an up and coming affluent suburb. With republicans, these programs are socialism-until THEY need them. Talk about hyprocrisy at it's finest.

One food pantry around here shut down last week. They simply ran out of food. People stepped in with money and help, but how much of this can happen before there are riots?

The New World Order is right on track, just as Prescott Bush and his robber baron cronies envisioned, whereby The People are marginalized to servitude status and the wealth is held by the very few.

No surprise that his grandson was instrumental in mortally wounding us as a nation over an 8-year period and then in delivering what amounts to a financial coup de gras with this transparent robbery of the poor to give to the rich who caused the crisis in the first place..

The next thing to be attacked fiercely by the Republicans will be Social Security and Medicare. The Republicans will use every trick in the book that results from this bailout of Wall Street to move to privatize Social Security and put it in the hands of Wall Street money manipulators.

It is critical to make sure that Republicans are well in the minority in both the House and Senate to keep this from happening. If there are insufficient Democrats elected to have control of Congress and defeat any attack then the Republicans will lay the blame at the feet of Obama and the Democrats for privatizing Social Security and Medicare.

The food banks need a bailout, nothing in the pantry.

yeah i know someone who lost their job and when their unemployment wasnt extended had to recieve food stamps ...then after their life got back on track ( which maybe was a month) a letter came stating she now owes the government - pay them back for the food stamps...ridiculous, sad how they just do not care for any citizen.

In Michigan, I dare anyone of us, lornejl, to live on the food stamp program for a month. It is less than one quarter of my own budget.

Apparently you need to move to California, or you are eating WAY to much, but that's probably not the case.

With State and federal assistance, you can eat better than someone who has a pretty decent-sized food budget.

47 million Americans lack health insurance, and as many as 55 million more are under-insured.

29 million families are dependent on food stamps.

But up until last week, the asshats in D.C. insisted our economy was "fundamentally strong".

I'm startin' to think them Washington types need to get out more.

In NY, home of Wall Street, if a single person earns more than $277 a week before taxes they do not qualify for food stamps.

http://www.foodbanknyc.org/go/food-poverty-in-nyc

"In New York City, one of the richest cities in the world, food poverty is around every corner. Throughout the five boroughs, approximately 1.3 million people " largely comprised of women, children, seniors, the working poor and people with disabilities " rely on soup kitchens and food pantries. In addition, 3.1 million New Yorkers experienced difficulty affording food for themselves and their families in 2007, up 55 percent from two million in 2003.

Food poverty in New York City results from problems affording or accessing needed food. Low-income New Yorkers often have to make choices between providing enough food for themselves or their families and paying the month's rent or utility bills. With food and gas prices steadily rising, difficulty affording food among New Yorkers with already stretched budgets has reached crisis levels. The steadily rising cost of living is also being felt by middle-income New Yorkers, who are increasingly experiencing difficulty affording food. Meanwhile, a number of financial pressures " including health issues, health insurance issues and low wages " continue to affect New Yorkers with low to moderate incomes. "

No bailout for American citizens, just the automobile industry, rum manufacturers, banks and Wall street thieves.

Who needs unemployment benefits when we have food stamps?

Stop whining and go dig through some dumpsters, or move into a 53' truck trailer. (at least choose the reefer units, they have AC.)

Don't talk, Rebel P., until you have lived it. In Detroit, there are no dumpsters full of anything you would want to eat.
Seriously, several dozen organizations benefit from grocery, bakery and restaurant leftovers and donate them out ASAP.
