John McCain and his Republican allies are "readying a newly aggressive assault on Sen. Barack Obama's character, believing that to win in November they must shift the conversation back to questions about the Democrat's judgment, honesty and personal associations," several top Republicans told the Washington Post.

With just a month to go until Election Day, McCain's team has decided that its emphasis on the senator's biography as a war hero, experienced lawmaker and straight-talking maverick is insufficient to close a growing gap with Obama. The Arizonan's campaign is also eager to move the conversation away from the economy, an issue that strongly favors Obama and has helped him to a lead in many recent polls.

"We're going to get a little tougher," a senior Republican operative said, indicating that a fresh batch of television ads is coming. "We've got to question this guy's associations. Very soon. There's no question that we have to change the subject here," said the operative, who was not authorized to discuss strategy and spoke on the condition of anonymity. [...]

Moments after the House of Representatives approved a bailout package for Wall Street on Friday afternoon, the McCain campaign released a television ad that challenges Obama's honesty and asks, "Who is Barack Obama?" The ad alleges that "Senator Obama voted 94 times for higher taxes. Ninety-four times. He's not truthful on taxes." The charge that Obama voted 94 times for higher taxes has been called misleading by independent fact-checkers, who have noted that the majority of those votes were on nonbinding budget resolutions.

A senior campaign official called the ad "just the beginning" of commercials that will "strike the new tone" in the campaign's final days. The official said the "aggressive tone" will center on the question of "whether this guy is ready to be president."

The Obama campaign painted the Post story as evidence that the McCain campaign is trying to disregard the country's serious economic challenges in favor of personal attacks on Obama:

"On a day after we learned that America lost three-quarters of a million jobs this year and a week after our financial system teetered on the brink of collapse, John McCain and his campaign have announced that they want to 'turn the page' on the economic crisis facing working families and spend the last month of this election launching dishonest, dishonorable character attacks against Barack Obama. We understand that it's not easy for John McCain to defend the worst economic record of our lifetime, but he will have to explain to the people struggling to pay their bills and stay in their homes why he would rather spend his time tearing down Barack Obama than laying out a plan to build up our economy," said Obama-Biden Spokesman Bill Burton.

Obama's team also released this web ad hammering McCain over the new job loss numbers:

John McCain and his Republican allies are "readying a newly aggressive assault on Sen. Barack Obama's character, believing that to win in November they must shift the conversation back to questions ab...

It seems to me that statements like this might play well with their low-information base, but not so well with everyone else. Considering that it is the "undecideds" that they need to sway, this looks like a losing tactic.

and this same tactic failed Hillary when she complained about being able to win over working hard working white Americans.

I expect for John to do the exact same thing and get the exact same result as Hillary did.

Hendersonville, North Carolina rolls out the welcome sign for Obama. A Sign of what’s coming from John McCain?
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/10/4/214841/888/1009/620372
Please bombard them with complaints.

The K K K is still alive and well, I was married to a guy that was from Henderson, NC. That I later found out by accident during a first time family in law visit that his family was deeply entrenched with the K K K (but I suspected it by all of the innuendos and code language, I was the guess who's coming to dinner),) It's getting ready to get really ugly, and I am praying that all the motives to divide our progress will not succeed.

Tell me, what is code language? I have yet to meet a person who spoke in some sort of code. Is this like a secret society ? Where do you find a translation of coded talk?

Theres nothing left for McCains people to do but try throwing the kitchen sink along with the waste disosal at Obama,BUT it's already been thrown ,several times.Sean Hannity has ranted on almost everyone of his shows about Ayers,Wright and Rezko and Muslims !The GOP HAS to distract voters from the ISSUES that matter .Unemployment, high utility bills, loss of homes, uninsured CHILDREN and thousands of unisured families !Out sourceing of AMERICAN Jobs to overseas ,High gas prices ,high crime ,the drug war America is loseing .I doubt that McCain can throw anymore MooseS***,than Palin spews everytime she opens her ignorant mouth.I have said before and I'll say it again, the smear campaign has just begun.Desperate people who are loseing, do stupid things ,these last weeks before the Election WILL be bloody ,mean and lowdown ,it's the Political way and it shames America and Americans..

All of the ills you cite began decades ago. Both parties have failed to solve those issues or serve the american people well. Your partisan attack rhetoric only suggests that you have no interest in solving issues, just placing people in power who think as you do.

McCain has "Pulled out" of Mich. and yet he wants to stay in Iraq indefinitely?
Too bad young Levi didn't follow the lead of the old man.
Me, I'm sending money to Obama, writing editorials and posting articles.
This GOP strategy will backfire.

Come on Obama, re-educate America about the Keating 5.

I am sure America has forgotten all about that scam. Remind em Obama!!!!!

I'll bet Painlin thinks that the Keating 5 was a knockoff of the Jackson 5.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:24 AM on 10/05/2008

Since 4 of the Keating 5 were Democrats, my thought is that Obama will leave that alone. Especially since the former Democratic prosecutor wrote a book about it and defended McCain as being without any blame.

and which of those Democrats is running for President and still holds office to this day?

As I recall, only ONE of the current Keating 5 members is running for President and is a Senator from Arizona.

At 72, can we tell this man is desperate to try anything in the days leading up to the election?

If McCain wins or loses, I'd like to see someone write a book about him and why he treats his wife the way he does; the AZ doctors who claim Cindy had bruises that looked like domestic violence; go more in-depth into Cindy's addiction and why John wasn't around; find some of the people posting stories about him on the internet--like the woman who happened to be in Fiji while he was there on vacation. Plus the waitress who overheard Palin say "Sambo beat the Bitch" in a restaurant, when referring to Obama beating Hillary in the Primary.

I will never forget how Obama's been treated for the last 20+ months but how the MSM won't report stories on McCain or Palin. Palin praises Hillary now but during the primaries said she was tired of her "whining."

I live in Az, and there are no doctors who have ever claimed such a thing. If you plan on making charges against the man have the courage to cite the source(s). Same with the so called Palin remarks. If no one steps forward and signs an affidavit stating the truth of it, all it shakes out as is dirty politics. How would you feel if the shoe was on the other foot? You say Obama has been mistreated, how?

How could McCain decides on a couple whose activites had been as members of a Separatist Movements in Alaska and whose agenda is to turn all federal lands in Alaska back to the state!
Do we really want someone who appears to be a separatist in the White House??

These Seperatist couple, Sarah Palin and her husband "First Dudd" Todd Palin a dues-paying member was twice registered as a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, a fierce states’ rights group that wants to turn all federal lands in Alaska back to the state.

For all but two months from 1995 to 2002, the governor’s husband was a due-paying registered member of the Alaskan Independence Party, according to the Alaska Division of Elections.

It’s also now known that Sarah Palin spoke at yearly Alaska Indepence Party conventions for several years, including since she’s been governor. Her last attendance was at least one convention, and in January of this year 2008!

How much of Sarah Palin’s political history and loyalties were known to McCain prior to her selection as the Republican VP on the ticket? Is this yet another issue that goes directly to his lack of judgment in selecting her for the bottom of the ticket?

Does McCains loyalties lie in the same direction as Palin’s or is he so deperate to get into the White House that he will overlook such an obvious flaw in his running mate?

didn't McCain learn anything from the primaries? Hillary threw the kitchen sink at Obama and it backfired. She tried the Ayers thing, Rezko, Pastor Wright...voters rejected her tactics and Obama prevailed. Someone better call McCain and tell him he's making a big mistake by ignoring the relevant issues.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:53 AM on 10/05/2008

McCain is not interested in discussing the relevant issues with America.

He wants to shove E-News (Entertainment News) down the throats of Americans to continue the daylight roberry of Americans on Wall Street and at the Treasury department.

Okay now, this is not "us" vs "them", this is Americans fighting to preserve America as she was meant to exist, and not as the socially stunted, left behind country it will inevitably be if McCain finds his way into the Oval Office.

Republicans are not (in & of themselves) to blame.... it was lack of oversight, pushing of deregulation, and disrespect for the law that got us into this mess.

Now it's time for us to take this country back. Make sure McCain loses by significant proportions. Do your part. Cast yor vote, and encourage others to do so, as well.
