John McCain and his Republican allies are "readying a newly aggressive assault on Sen. Barack Obama's character, believing that to win in November they must shift the conversation back to questions about the Democrat's judgment, honesty and personal associations," several top Republicans told the Washington Post.

With just a month to go until Election Day, McCain's team has decided that its emphasis on the senator's biography as a war hero, experienced lawmaker and straight-talking maverick is insufficient to close a growing gap with Obama. The Arizonan's campaign is also eager to move the conversation away from the economy, an issue that strongly favors Obama and has helped him to a lead in many recent polls.

"We're going to get a little tougher," a senior Republican operative said, indicating that a fresh batch of television ads is coming. "We've got to question this guy's associations. Very soon. There's no question that we have to change the subject here," said the operative, who was not authorized to discuss strategy and spoke on the condition of anonymity. [...]

Moments after the House of Representatives approved a bailout package for Wall Street on Friday afternoon, the McCain campaign released a television ad that challenges Obama's honesty and asks, "Who is Barack Obama?" The ad alleges that "Senator Obama voted 94 times for higher taxes. Ninety-four times. He's not truthful on taxes." The charge that Obama voted 94 times for higher taxes has been called misleading by independent fact-checkers, who have noted that the majority of those votes were on nonbinding budget resolutions.

A senior campaign official called the ad "just the beginning" of commercials that will "strike the new tone" in the campaign's final days. The official said the "aggressive tone" will center on the question of "whether this guy is ready to be president."

The Obama campaign painted the Post story as evidence that the McCain campaign is trying to disregard the country's serious economic challenges in favor of personal attacks on Obama:

"On a day after we learned that America lost three-quarters of a million jobs this year and a week after our financial system teetered on the brink of collapse, John McCain and his campaign have announced that they want to 'turn the page' on the economic crisis facing working families and spend the last month of this election launching dishonest, dishonorable character attacks against Barack Obama. We understand that it's not easy for John McCain to defend the worst economic record of our lifetime, but he will have to explain to the people struggling to pay their bills and stay in their homes why he would rather spend his time tearing down Barack Obama than laying out a plan to build up our economy," said Obama-Biden Spokesman Bill Burton.

Obama's team also released this web ad hammering McCain over the new job loss numbers:

John McCain and his Republican allies are "readying a newly aggressive assault on Sen. Barack Obama's character, believing that to win in November they must shift the conversation back to questions ab...

Negative campaigning, the act of smearing your opponent's record, character, and policy.

Otherwise known as lying. You'll never get an accurate true understanding when all you hear is negative campaigning. Truth is irrelavent when pandering to peoples fears.

At least the Democrats have the decency to air positive advertisements.

Let's be aware of something, people: Voter caging and push polling are alive and well in the Republican party, just like they were in 2004. Those things played a big part in Bush's re-election.
Just because Sen. Obama's numbers are looking good, we should not become complacent. I won't believe it until I see Barack Obama sworn in on Jan. 20, 2009, nor should anyone else.

I totally agree with you. I don't trust poll workers and I am hesitant to vote early. I am in a red state and in a heavy McCain/Palin district. After Florida in 2000, I do not trust poll workers.

Do not trust poll workers? BE ONE! Call your county voter registratrar and volunteer. If we can work the polls...we can WATCH the polls. Wear Blue on 11-4!

McCain was involved in the Keating Five scandle but managed to
avoid punishment. So what was the deal exactly? Did McCain do
a dirty deed on the others to get off, who came to his rescue, who does
McCain owe favors to?
This recent "pork for votes" debacle is a very good window into how
Washington gets money and favors from other powerful people. There
were Democrats and Republicans who got special favors in this bailout.
But did McCain? It never pays in the long run to throw dirt. However in
elections a shadow of a doubt is enough to change an undecided voters
mind, so Obama needs to be willing to fight back if necessary.

McBush going negative for the last 31 days shouldn't surprise anyone . . . his entire campaign has been negative!! So much for him saying he would run a respectful campaign!!

McBush better be careful though . . . he goes "fiercely negative" and he may find that it bites him in the butt. People may realize just what kind of person he is and turn on him. I'd be willing to bet that he doesn't want people to know his true nature . . . and more and more they are seeing the true McBush and they don't like what they see!

I am sure John McCain would have if Barry had run a respectful campaign like he promised. Obama said we should focus on the issues. When has he focused on the issues. It is hard for McCain to stand by when someone like Barry is running lies about you.

Your boy started it...I am NOT sure "Hold My Breath Until I Pass Out" McCain learned his lesson : when he and his henchmen run trash against Obama,it might hold some interest for a while - but when REALITY hits (economy in toilet) , the American People saw your boy Sidney flopping like an old flannel shirt on a clothesline, blaming everyone but himself and his deregulation fetish, they saw him "suspend his campaign (he didn't) to fly to DC to fix the mess" (he made it worse).
The American People saw who they needed to steer the country through a crisis...
OBAMA / BIDEN .
Why do you think Obama's numbers are up,up,UP?

QUOTE from above: "John McCain and his Republican allies are "readying a newly aggressive assault on Sen. Barack Obama's character..."

WHAT? I've never heard anything so idiotic actually ANNOUNCED before.

What's the big news here, McCain? What's the big change? McCain has *always* been negative. This is beyond laughable. And this from the man who said he would never ever go negative?? while his wife confirmed the same in later interviews ????

McCain's negativity shows ALL over his face. If you have a "pause" button on your remote, pause it at ANY time McCain is on. You will always find an angry, mean, bitter, and scary face. He's been so mean and so angry for so long that it literally shows all over his face.

McCain's zero integrity has now shifted to NEGATIVE integrity. He can't get any lower than low.

McCain going negative. Now would that be the actions of an agent of change, or would that be just more of the same?

Even more disturbing than the total number of jobs that have been lost thus far this year is hearing both George W. Bush and John McCain say "the fundamentals of our economy are strong."

This is a great ad! If the Obama campaign continues to hit McCain with ads such as these (backed up by websites such as www.johnmccainrecord.com/jobs), they will trivialize any of the McCain campaign's forthcoming negative ads.

Tell me are you really Proud of the America that enslaved people because of the color of their skin? Embraced a policy of separate is equal for decades? prevented a class of people from voting, housing, marrying, sitting on a bus, restaurant, etc all because of the color of their skin? lycnhed, bombed churches, homes, used dogs, to prevent them attending an equal school. If you are PROUD of that piece of American history - then so be it!

At this point, negative campaign may backfire McCain/Palin as it is perceived as last resort.
We have a horrible economy and horrible image to outside of the U.S.
The negative campaign may just worsen it...

Negativity in this poor economic condition... I say NAY, because... why do you think chocolates are selling... campbell soups are doing well? We want something positive and not negative.

Maverick gave much of American image of those investment bankers... the power that they enjoyed and handing tab to taxpayers... I am not a politician... but... this is how I feel... What is your comment?

Yes, McCant and Apalin, please continue to go negative - it's worked so well for you so far. And try not to scream and whine about how unfair it is when Obama goes negative (or even worse, tells the truth) about you

McCain has his own Bill Ayers -- in the form of G. Gordon Liddy. Now a conservative radio talk-show host, Liddy spent more than 4 years in prison for his role in the 1972 Watergate burglary. That was just one element of what Liddy did, and proposed to do, in a secret White House effort to subvert the Constitution. Far from repudiating him, McCain has embraced him.

How close are McCain and Liddy? At least as close as Obama and Ayers appear to be. In 1998, Liddy's home was the site of a McCain fundraiser. Over the years, he has made at least four contributions totaling $5,000 to the senator's campaigns -- including $1,000 this year.

Last November, McCain went on his radio show. Liddy greeted him as "an old friend," and McCain sounded like one. "I'm proud of you, I'm proud of your family," he gushed. "It's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great."
Which principles would those be?

The "Maverick" thing has gone on too long. Besides the fact that it's not true, i'm not really sure what it means. I think if we look it up it has something to do with a calf that has strayed from the heard not knowing any better. If its a popular culture reference from the TV show and then later the movie starring Mel Gibson, then its a reference to a charming character who has a gambling problem and happens to get himself in trouble because he's a con man at heart.

i will assume the later.

If the relationship between Barack Obama and William Ayers merits scrutiny, then in all fairness, the relationship between John (Songbird) McCain and Jim Hensley merits a review. Mr. Hensley is McCain"s late father-in-law and former employer.

Ayers and Hensley have a few interesting things in common, e.g., (1) they are both convicted felons that (2) have been linked to unsavory violence prone organizations (Ayers the Weathermen, Hensley the Mafia); (3) they both reportedly helped launch the political careers of the two presidential candidates in question; and (4) they both went on to become well respected citizens in their communities.

People, people, people....the link below is why we MUST stay ever vigilant from now until election day. This link(s) shows how Mc got to the top of the Rethug ticket. Some of you may have already seen it, but for those who haven't...it's and eye-opener and a MUST-SEE. In the waning days of the campaign, we can take absolutely NOTHING for granted...pay little or no attention to polling data...just keep working hard...our very lives may depend on it. This thing is going to ramp up very, very quickly now...it's going to get hard...it's going to rough...but it's going to be worth it!!!!
