O.J. Simpson is taken into custody after being found guilty on all 12 charges, including felony kidnapping, armed robbery and conspiracy at the Clark County Regional Justice Center in Las Vegas on Friday, Oct. 3, 2008. LAS VEGAS — In a city where luck means everything, O.J. Simpson came out the big loser _ and his unlucky number in a case full of bizarre twists was 13.

He was convicted of an armed robbery that happened on Sept. 13 and was found guilty on the 13th anniversary of his Los Angeles murder acquittal. The Las Vegas jury deliberated for 13 hours after a 13-day trial.

And then, as only the sobs of Simpson's sister broke the silence late Friday, the lights went out.

Court marshals flipped on flashlights and shouted for everyone to stay seated. Only the judge knew what had happened. It was 11 p.m. and the courthouse lights had shut down automatically.

"Timed out," Judge Jackie Glass said in a fitting epitaph for the story of O.J. Simpson, which has long haunted America.

The 61-year-old Hall of Fame football star was convicted of kidnapping, armed robbery and 10 other charges for gathering five men a year ago and storming a room at a hotel-casino to seize Simpson sports mementos _ including game balls, plaques and photos _ from two collectors. Prosecutors said two of the men with him were armed; one said Simpson had asked him to bring a gun.

After the verdict, Simpson, the sports-idol-turned-celebrity-pariah, was handcuffed and led from the room with his co-defendant, Clarence "C.J." Stewart. They could spend the rest of their lives in prison.

"There is justice," said attorney Gloria Allred, who has represented the family of his slain ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson. "Justice was delayed, but in this case it was not denied. Now that he may spend the rest of his life in prison, the law, and not O.J. Simpson, will have the last word."

Some observers said the Las Vegas case paled in comparison to the "trial of the century" in 1995, a yearlong opus in which Simpson was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife and her friend Ronald Goldman.

A rapt nation followed the Los Angeles trial. Tales of a gruesome murder and a bloody glove, as well as the celebrity defendant, drew a media frenzy.

In Las Vegas, Simpson's fate played out in a small courtroom dotted with empty seats. Even the stunning verdict came as most of America slept, oblivious to the irony that Simpson might spend the rest of his life in prison for what most perceived as a petty crime, a tussle among dysfunctional middle-aged men.

Simpson's Las Vegas defense tried to tell the jury that the two cases had nothing to do with each other, but it was a losing battle.

"I don't know that one trial cancels out the other," said Loyola University law professor Laurie Levenson, who attended Simpson's murder trial. "People will always be troubled by O.J. For the people troubled by the Los Angeles acquittal, this case will make small amends. Saying finally there is justice, at least from a legal perspective, is very crude way of looking at justice."

She predicted that Stewart, 54, will have a strong chance for reversal on appeal because he was forced to stand trial beside Simpson.

"O.J. was toxic, and he has been toxic since 1994, and this jury was just ready to clean up the mess," Levenson said.

Simpson lawyer Yale Galanter said Saturday he felt bad for Simpson but even worse for Stewart, who got dragged along in a campaign to convict Simpson.

"This was just payback," he said of the verdict. "They were on an agenda."

Galanter and Stewart's lawyers promised to appeal, in part because unlike the predominantly black jury that decided Simpson's murder case, this panel included no African-Americans. Neither Simpson nor Stewart testified.

Simpson friend Tom Scotto, who wept in court, called it "a public lynching."

"Was this something to put someone in jail for the rest of their life for? It's a total injustice. There was no justice served in that courtroom," Scotto said.

It was Scotto's wedding that had brought Simpson to Las Vegas on that fateful week in 2007, and details of wedding plans, flowers, a cake and parties formed an ironic counterpoint to testimony about Simpson gathering up a posse that included two gun-toting men to confront memorabilia dealers who were peddling Simpson's personal property to the highest bidder.

The case was set in motion by Thomas Riccio, a collectibles broker who tried to bring in the FBI when he heard that two memorabilia dealers were planning to sell a trove of Simpson artifacts. Failing to get their attention, he helped set up a "sting" by promoting an anonymous buyer who turned out to be Simpson.

Riccio, who has peddled goods including video of Anna Nicole Smith's breast implant surgery, saw a chance to profit by recording the confrontation between Simpson and collectibles dealers Alfred Beardsley and Bruce Fromong.

He rented a cramped hotel room away from the Las Vegas Strip for the meeting and planted a digital recorder atop an armoire. Riccio then sold the recordings of the six-minute confrontation for $210,000 before turning them over to police eight days later. Although they couldn't be authenticated, the recordings became the heart of the prosecution's case, along with audio recorded by gunman Michael McClinton at two wedding parties.

The recordings were sometimes garbled, but Simpson's voice came through loud and clear: "Don't let nobody out of this room." The words formed the basis of the prosecution's kidnapping charge.

The former football hero also was heard accusing the men of stealing his possessions. His lawyer would argue that Simpson was on a recovery mission to reclaim the artifacts of his life.

But District Attorney David Roger argued that ownership was not a defense to robbery.

Kidnapping is punishable by five years to life in prison. Armed robbery carries a sentence of at least two years behind bars and could bring as much as 30.

Simpson and Stewart were taken to the Clark County jail, where the football star will live in a 7-by-14-foot cell, far removed from his ranch-style home in the lush Miami suburbs. It will be his home until at least Dec. 5, when he and Stewart are scheduled to be sentenced.

Even before the verdict, Simpson appeared resigned that his luck had run out.

He had been prepared for the worst, his lawyer said.

And in a conversation with The Associated Press on Thursday, Simpson implied as much, saying, "I'm afraid that I won't get to go to my kids' college graduations after I managed to get them through college."

Scotto told reporters Saturday that he had spoken to Simpson by phone.

"He's in good spirits," Scotto said. "He's one of the strongest human beings on the planet. He's confident the truth will come out eventually."

Armed robbery is nothing compared to the handling of Osama

Most Al Queda were trapped in a northern Afghan city Toucan. But the order came to allow the Pakistani government fly helicopters back and forth to the city until they picked up thousands of their allies (including Al Quida). In the south, the US orderd our Northern Alliance allies to not attack Kandahar where Osama bin Ladin was located. The allies were upset because total victory was there for the taking. Instead, a few days passed while a local Peshtun Kandahar agreed to surrender the city. Of course this gave Osama and thousands of his followers time to escape to Tora Bora and Pakastan.

Osama and Al Queda were kept alive as the boogieman and thus excuse to expand the war on terrorism to the oil rich Iraq.

The lesson here- NO MORE CELEB TRIALS IN LA!!!! Aparently, LA is competely incapable of finding against them- thus, if we don't want celebs to be above the law, we must extradite them to different jurristictions.

Of course, OJ's old case is being prosecuted again with this verdict. The police who are predominately white and hostile are not sympathetic to O.J. so they did not respond to OJ's complaint that his property was stolen and being hocked - that's is the essence of this present case. Those who think that OJ was guilty in his first prosecution are glad to see him convicted on something else that has nothing to do with the first case. OJ, unlike so many other poor, black men in America had the money and resources to defend himself in a system that is stacked against poor and black folk. At this point I really don't care if he did it or not. Get over it! OJ went through the same system that other white folk who have money to afford good lawyers do and won his case. This case has been another retrial - just ask the jurors (not that I like OJ either).

Whatever it took to bring Simpson down--it HAD to be done. Race has no place in this.
To quote Malcolm X (who would have approved of these latest turn of events) "By any means..."

If anything--the property belongs to the families of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman--since OJ has done an Al Sharpton--and not paid a dime in a major civil judgement against him (I know Sharpton's supporters paid it--but the judgement was against Sharpton because he slandered the prosecutor in the Tawana Brawley case)

Johnny Cochran did his job as a lawyer--except where he did the unconscionable thing of using race
where no race issue existed. Cochran inflamed racial tensions among those too weak-minded to understand that it was only a ploy--and there were plenty of those. Cochran did our society a great disservice by using this as a wedge to free his obviously guilty client. Cochran should not ever be praised, but condemned for his reprehensible tactics. Stay away from race here--it is not a black and white issue at all. It's about a cocky, self assured man who convinced himself that his proper place was still in running among the rest of us.

Three cheers for Fred Goldman for doggedly pursuing the $33 million civil award. Mr. Goldman's efforts pushed Simpson to hide the items to avoid their being taken to satisfy Mr. Goldman's judgment, and set up Simpson's final downfall.
My heart goes out to you Mr. Goldman--and my hearty congratulations.

From his perspective: As a lawyer, if you have a black jury, you use the race-card. Simple as that. ....He didn't care about justice or fairness, he's a defense lawyer, he wanted his guy to beat the rap, as they say.

You are of course right --Cochran didn't care about justice.
It takes a bigger man that Cochran was to try a case on the facts and not avoid selling out and inciting those who don''t understand the real facts or real issues.

I'm hoping someone in HELL will tap Johnny Cochran on the shoulder and lets him know what is going on with his good friend!!!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:56 AM on 10/05/2008

Why would Johnny Cochran be in Hell? Some might say that he did exactly what he was paid to do...defend his client by using all the means at his disposal that were within the law.

That's right the Law. Respectfully, not what I want or think, or you or anybody else thinks or wants.

I think it's disgraceful that the 'Juice' walked but given the inept performance of the LAPD, various senior Prosecutors and of course star witness Det, Mark Furman, all Johnny C. had to say was if the case was such a 'lock' for the LAPD why did they not follow their own rules, why not answer questions on evidence fabrication?

Cochran didn't introduce reasonable doubt to the jury. Respectfully, the LADP did that for him.

Especially as memories of the King trial were so fresh.

By all means slate individuals for failing in their roles (as above) but I really can't see what criticism you can bring against those who work within a system they did not devise but who are sharp enough to spot the gaps they can use. And I would suggest in law enforcement, that is a two-way street.

I'll be honest, if I'm ever in the pit facing the wall, I'd want some-one as sharp and as clever as Cochran in my corner fighting for me. And I suspect in the long dark reaches of the night, if it came to the edge, so would most of us.

You're right of course.
The problem is that when we select a group of 12 jurors, they should consider all the facts--and despite the incompetence of the prosecution and the many LAPD mistakes. there was more than enough there to see the truth.
In the end, Simpson enjoyed 13 years of freedom when he should have spent that time in prison--(welcome back!!). The shameless taunting and tormenting he conducted towards the Goldman and the Brown Families after destroying their lives was beyond human decency.
In a year, after all the activity around him dies down, Simpson will have to get used to being largely forgotten and the recipient of one visitor maybe about every six months. Bye Bye Simpson. You are almost forgotten already.

Yes. When a lawyer knows for a fact that someone brutally killed two people in cold blood, and helps them to avoid punishment, he has made himself an accomplice morally in my view. And we all know Cochran KNEW. O J has still had to live with himself, though. And we cannot control or predict our dreams. I'm sure he will be his own worst inflicter of pain in the end. I believe if he had NOT written that book, he may have had a different verdict. I say MAY have had. Men in prison don't like it when huge men hurt defenseless women and children, so I think O J will probably have to be isolated from the general population for awhile. They say he talks to himself. He will be talking to Cochran from his jail cell, too, I bet, wishing he was here.

What Johnny didn't realize is OJ had no conscious, that it didn't bother him in the least. A bad golf shot bothered him more............Oh well, he won't need his golf clubs now.

Sounds like his lawyers are setting up a flimsy appeal. Supreme Court already ruled that a jury of your peers has nothing to do with race. They just have to be representative of the community. He's in Nevada. Tough break on that one. Better find a better legal argument.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:39 AM on 10/05/2008

No, this was not about race--except in 1995, when race worked in Simpson's favor.
Twelve thoughtful people evaluated the evidence for thirteen hours--and came up with the correct verdict. A thug is now where he belongs, and a nation can go about the business of forgetting about him. I, for one, won't miss his smarmy smug attitude. Welcome to prison Simpson. A 7 foot by 14 ft cell in protective custosy is far too good for you.

Thank God our economy tanked so I didn't have to go thru another OJ trial all over the media. It looks like Paris, Brittany and Pitt/Jolie show will be below the fold for awhile. But the economy will eventually straighten itself out and our nation can get back to what is really important to our lives.

O.J., since he beat his double murder rap, seems to have convinced himself that he can do anything, commit any crime, and he is above the law. Too bad reality caught up with him. Money and fame can only go so far.

He better hope he doesn't end up in gen pop. Or stuck with some roomy who's in the AB. Or one of the MS 13.

If O.J. has to do hard time, his days are really numbered. Wonder who's punch he's going to be?

There is a justice system inside the walls of prison that is more just, in some cases, than one we have.

FIRED UP READY TO GO!

1. If your state has early voting, PLEASE VOTE EARLY and take others with you.

2. If you qualify for ABSENTEE voting, do it and tell others who qualify.

3. Advise SENIOR CITIZENS to do absentee voting if early voting is not an option, b/c the lines will be too long for them. Their age alone will qualify them.

4. Due to the record breaking lines on this historical election day, those who do not have the above options, request a PERSONAL LEAVE DAY from your job, if it does not cause you any substantial hardship. It's worth what we need to do. McBush in office is a hardship we cannot afford.

5. Advise EVERYONE to vote a straight democratic ticket to get the filibuster proof, 60 seat majority, so O can get legislation passed.

6. Pass the above info to family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, other blogs, local Obama Campaign offices, man at the gas pump, lady in the grocery store, person you run into at the Post Office, heck even your dog or cat, et al........You get the picture. SPREAD THE WORD.

CHECK this WEBSITE to see if your state has early voting or absentee voting.
