WASHINGTON — By claiming that Democrat Barack Obama is "palling around with terrorists" and doesn't see the U.S. like other Americans, vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin targeted key goals for a faltering campaign.

And though she may have scored a political hit each time, her attack was unsubstantiated and carried a racially tinged subtext that John McCain himself may come to regret.

First, Palin's attack shows that her energetic debate with rival Joe Biden may be just the beginning, not the end, of a sharpened role in the battle to win the presidency.

"Our opponent ... is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect, imperfect enough, that he's palling around with terrorists who would target their own country," Palin told a group of donors in Englewood, Colo. A deliberate attempt to smear Obama, McCain's ticket-mate echoed the line at three separate events Saturday.

"This is not a man who sees America like you and I see America," she said. "We see America as a force of good in this world. We see an America of exceptionalism."

Obama isn't above attacking McCain's character with loaded words, releasing an ad on Sunday that calls the Arizona Republican "erratic" _ a hard-to miss suggestion that McCain's age, 72, might be an issue.

"Our financial system in turmoil," an announcer says in Obama's new ad. "And John McCain? Erratic in a crisis. Out of touch on the economy."

A harsh and plainly partisan judgment, certainly, but not on the level of suggesting that a fellow senator is un-American and even a friend of terrorists.

Story continues below

In her character attack, Palin questions Obama's association with William Ayers, a member of the Vietnam-era Weather Underground. Her reference was exaggerated at best if not outright false. No evidence shows they were "pals" or even close when they worked on community boards years ago and Ayers hosted a political event for Obama early in his career.

Obama, who was a child when the Weathermen were planting bombs, has denounced Ayers' radical views and actions.

With her criticism, Palin is taking on the running mate's traditional role of attacker, said Rich Galen, a Republican strategist.

"There appears to be a newfound sense of confidence in Sarah Palin as a candidate, given her performance the other night," Galen said. "I think that they are comfortable enough with her now that she's got the standing with the electorate to take off after Obama."

Second, Palin's incendiary charge draws media and voter attention away from the worsening economy. It also comes after McCain supported a pork-laden Wall Street bailout plan in spite of conservative anger and his own misgivings.

"It's a giant changing of the subject," said Jenny Backus, a Democratic strategist. "The problem is the messenger. If you want to start throwing fire bombs, you don't send out the fluffy bunny to do it. I think people don't take Sarah Palin seriously."

The larger purpose behind Palin's broadside is to reintroduce the question of Obama's associations. Millions of voters, many of them open to being swayed to one side or the other, are starting to pay attention to an election a month away.

For the McCain campaign, that makes Obama's ties to Ayers as well as convicted felon Antoin "Tony" Rezko and the controversial minister Jeremiah Wright ripe for renewed criticism. And Palin brings a fresh voice to the argument.

Effective character attacks have come earlier in campaigns. In June 1988, Republican George H.W. Bush criticized Democrat Michael Dukakis over the furlough granted to Willie Horton, a convicted murderer who then raped a woman and stabbed her companion. Related TV ads followed in September and October.

The Vietnam-era Swift Boat veterans who attacked Democrat John Kerry's war record started in the spring of 2004 and gained traction in late summer.

"The four weeks that are left are an eternity. There's plenty of time in the campaign," said Republican strategist Joe Gaylord. "I think it is a legitimate strategy to talk about Obama and to talk about his background and who he pals around with."

Palin's words avoid repulsing voters with overt racism. But is there another subtext for creating the false image of a black presidential nominee "palling around" with terrorists while assuring a predominantly white audience that he doesn't see their America?

In a post-Sept. 11 America, terrorists are envisioned as dark-skinned radical Muslims, not the homegrown anarchists of Ayers' day 40 years ago. With Obama a relative unknown when he began his campaign, the Internet hummed with false e-mails about ties to radical Islam of a foreign-born candidate.

Whether intended or not by the McCain campaign, portraying Obama as "not like us" is another potential appeal to racism. It suggests that the Hawaiian-born Christian is, at heart, un-American.

The fact is that when racism creeps into the discussion, it serves a purpose for McCain. As the fallout from Wright's sermons showed earlier this year, forcing Obama to abandon issues to talk about race leads to unresolved arguments about America's promise to treat all people equally.

John McCain occasionally says he looks back on decisions with regret. He has apologized for opposing a holiday to honor Martin Luther King Jr. He has apologized for refusing to call for the removal of a Confederate flag from South Carolina's Capitol.

When the 2008 campaign is over will McCain say he regrets appeals such as Palin's? ___

Obama's friend and advisor William Ayers stated: "There's something about a good bomb … Night after night, day after day, each majestic scene I witnessed was so terrible and so unexpected that no city would ever again stand innocently fixed in my mind. Big buildings and wide streets, cement and steel were no longer permanent. They, too, were fragile and destructible. A torch, a bomb, a strong enough wind, and they, too, would come undone or get knocked down."

I, for one, would be interested to see your proof that Ayers advised (or was "friends" with) Obama.

How about you provide a citation of any personal relationship between Sen. Obama and Prof. Ayers?

While you are at it, please tell me what crimes Prof. Ayers was convicted of?

How about what crimes he was charged with?

It is all smoke and mirrors for the ignorant and intellectually dishonest... Which are you?

Ugh. I watched my retirement saving dwindle today as the stock market tanked again. All I heard on the TV and Internet was how Barack Obama was a terrorist and that we should "kill him." Sometimes I despair the species.

http://oneangrydwarf2008.blogspot.com/2008/10/open-letter-to-john-mccain.html

After I had made my donations to the Obama Campaign and the DNC I wrote a letter (above) and I mailed it to John McCain. Then I started the blog and emailed all of my friends and family to come read the letter. Then I emailed the letter to every local media outlet I could think of. Tomorrow, I'll write another letter and do the same thing.

Please join me in writing a letter. Write to your local media outlets and let them know what a disgrace this kind of politics is. Write to you congretional rep and make sure that they understand that we don't want more politics as usual. Write to your friends and family and make sure that they understand that it doesn't have to be this way. Let our voices be heard by the people closest to us, so that we can clean this mess up and put America first again.

McCain Palin has devolved into using sean hannity talking points. hannity, a professional liar and hypocrite. hannity who derides Ayers for bombing government real estate to protest America's involvement in the Vietnam war, but is a apologist for segregationist who used terrorism to deny AMERICAN CITIZEN'S basic rights because of the color of their skin.

I don't condone anything Ayers did, but which is more American?

The McCain Campaign seems to be inciting violence against Obama. At McCain's rally on Monday a guy in the audience screamed out for Obama to be assassinated because he is a terrorist.

Shouldn't the McCain Campaign not be reported to the FBI for inciting the potential assassination of a Presidential candidate ?

The Obama surrogates need to be out there slamming Palin's secessionist connection. Palin continues to run her nasty mouth.

Today’s actions from Mrs. Plain make me to believe the following:
Mrs. Palin is pulling stuff out of her idiotic head and trying to link Mr. Obama to Mr. Ayres. Obama was 8 years old then. The only connection was that they both served on a committee for education.
Now applying Mrs. Plain rules to herself: In my opinion Mrs. Plain is a Terrorist who supports separation of Alaska from U.S.A. She is a member of Alaskan Independence Party (AIP). Let me remind you all in my opinion by her own rules she is a Terrorist. Her party AIP might be preparing for a war with America and wants Alaska to be a separate nation.
She addressed her terrorist organization's (AIP) convention in the last two years. Extrapolating her rules further the hunting she does of wolves from a helicopter may be a practice run and preparations for the war her terrorist organization (AIP) might be planning. She might target innocent Americans instead of wolves.
Second issue is one of her pastor is a domestic Terrorist who practices witchcraft.
Third issue: in one of her campaigns speech today someone shouted to kill her opponents and she did not condemn this. This speaks volumes of her true character. In conclusion she is a Racist, Bigot, and may be secretively associated with women KKK.

Yes, Obama was only 8 years old when Ayers Bombed the Pentagon and New York Police Station, and Obama had 40 years to study and learn of this terrorist. When Obama did learn of the deeds of Ayers, it didn’t matter to Obama. Obama STILL CHOSE to go to work with, serve on boards with, go to each others houses for dinner, take advise from, and study political tactics from this Terrorist. WHAT KIND OF JUDGEMENT does that show of Obama? None, I would say, except he is definitely a radical, left wing fringe Democrat.

He didn't take advice or study political tactics from Ayers, and at the time he joined the board (intended for urban school reform) Ayers was a professor, who has been honored by the Chicago Mayor's office (I know, I think that's weird too). More than that, some illustrious Republican served on the same board. There's no there there, as the saying goes.

Palin, read? Come on. Signs, tea leaves, coffee grounds maybe. But serious, scholarly journals or at a minimum, newspapers, NO.

I think, in Sarah's case, that she should be extremely careful about lobbing religious accusations Obama's way, and insinuating he's un-American. Because there's a load of Youtube videos of her own crazy religious connections...and I hear her husband was once a member of some Alaskan secessionist group?

She's smack dab in the middle of a glass house, and she's throwing stones. And the McCain campaign is ruining her, politically, in an effort to get their boy into the White House. It's disturbing.

Did Ayers do anything more than blow up a statue? Not that I'm condoning that mind you, but is this what all the fuss is about?

Pretty much. Ayers destroyed public property, they couldn't even get a conviction out of it and charges had to be dropped because the FBI chose to ignore the Constitution in their zeal in putting away a couple of hippy kids with more passion than common sense.

Let's ignore the fact that Ayers and Obama have not been shown to have any personal relationship and Ayer's political support amounted to throwing a party for a candidate he had never met and giving $200 to the campaign a few years later.

All at a time when Ayers was serving on boards of organizations pledged to equality in education.

that is the dangerous extremist they are peddaling.

I find it odd that at the VP Debate, Palin critized Biden for recalling the past of the Republicans. Now, she's talking about the past of Obama. She does things that are good for her at the time. She knows she's not qualified, she is just going through the motions and after all of this is done and she takes this loss on NOV. 4th, she is going to write a book about her experiances. Watch!!!! You heard it here first.

The most frequent and unsubstantiated charge by 0-supporters for anything criticizing Mr.0 is racism.
This is such a stretch, but the 0's think it will resonate with an integrated America who wants to shed the stink of racism. It was a theme throughout all of M0's rally speeches, which I found offensive and still do.

I don't think Palin is purposely being racist. She was cured of witches by a black man, remember?
How can you hate someone who cures you of witches?? Unless the witches were also black, then it's anybody's guess!

It just so happens that the McCain/Palin policies/ideology tends to attract White Nationalist Christian fundamentalists almost exlusively.

John McCain voting against MLK holiday, however.

The part of the debate that actually made me cry was when Senator Biden talked of his first wife and child killed in an accident, and he was choking back tear's.

Sarah Palin didn't flinch.....I was amazed at her cold and uncaring attitude. It was hard to watch the debate after that......

Palin has nothing to offer unless it is scripted. Not only is she is a cold and uncaring person, but behind that gee-whiz, aw shucks demeanor is one nasty, lying, disturbed individual. She is extremely incompetent and highly ambitious--a dangerous combination.
